Well what can I say, I think my fiancée and I were very lucky indeed and it was all thanks to Aaron on the front of house.

Having planned 3 days camping near Shrewsbury over the bank holiday weekend the UK weather once again let us down and we resorted to trawling through the 'late-rooms' app as we travelled up the M54, in the rain of course!!!

We set our sights on a Friday night double room stay with breakfast at the Mercure costing £99 and from that moment we never looked back.

We arrived to a friendly and professional welcome from Aaron who took his time to see what he could offer us at gone 9pm at night. A room upgrade for £20 was snapped up by the both of us along with an upgrade to the BRIDAL SUITE for free!!!! Amazing, as we were up in Shrewsbury for the weekend collecting our wedding rings from the Ring Workshop in Oswestry on the Saturday morning.

The room was out of this world, you could of played a game of cricket in the bathroom it was that big. And after a wonderful nights sleep in the four poster bed we hit the wonderful breakfast buffet, along with a fresh order of two poached eggs which wasn't a problem at all.

Would return in the future, especially if it included a £20 upgrade to the bridal suite, thanks once again Aaron. Made our weekend, rather than roughing it in a field!!!

Room Tip: The Bridal suite is a must, room 6 if you ever get the option to upgrade.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights because our friends had a wedding nearby and I'm glad we didn't have to spend a lot of time in our room because it sure would not have been a relaxing experience.

The premises of the hotel are definitely very lovely as many have mentioned but we were not impressed by our room, which did not live up to the normal standards that we have been used to when staying in Mercure hotels.

First of all our room was located in a separate house in the back, which actually probably was the lesser of two evils considering all the comments here about people not being able to have any privacy in the rooms of the main building. Our room was old and rundown, there were flies in the curtains and the furniture was stained. The bed and the bathroom were clean, but the shower was almost clogged. The worst though was that we arrived at midnight and the room was freezing cold since the heating was not on! Now, here is my problem with this place: how much does it really take for your staff to go turn the heating on in the room they know people will arrive to later on in a four star hotel?! We were very cold sleeping in the freezing room. Also the room was located below another room so we could hear every move of the people upstairs, which was a very claustrophobic experience.

The next night they had a big wedding in the hotel and the party went on till 1am and was very loud. Luckily we didn't care that much because we had just come back from our own party, but if we had stayed in this hotel specifically for relaxing purposes I would have been very annoyed to be listening to Spice Girls at 1 am in the morning.

Overall, I could have maybe spent half of the money we did staying in this hotel, but it is not worth the money and DEFINITELY does not live up to the standards of a four star hotel! The area is beautiful and the breakfast was ok (although expensive) but otherwise it is not worth it.

Room Tip: Don't stay here in the weekends since all the rooms will have noise from the weddings they host...

Nice looking hotel on the outside, I was in room 9 it felt like that every other guest who walked or talked on the stairs, which were behind the headboard were in there with you, noise travels ridiculously through the wall and did so until 2.30am, hotel was nice but I also want to relax and sleep, this was not going to happen here had a £200 bill for one night, room service dinner (nothing extravagant burger chips and soup) plus breakfast making up the bill seems a lot for no sleep, and hardly a relaxing time! So certainly wasn't going to triple that bill and stay for three nights, would have though if rooms better soundproofed and breakfast included. For a deluxe double I wasnt impressed didn't seem deluxe, maybe I stayed on a unlucky night but I certainly did not get value for money in my opinion

The only thing I regret about is staying there just for 1 night. Beautiful rooms, fantastic premises, good service and delicious food.

So I can give my strong recommendation to this hotel for everyone who would like to spend a marvelous time .

Whilst there are some great bits to this hotel, there are also some really poor, and in response to the receptionists request, I write my first review in about three years.

Our anniversary break left a sour taste in our mouth and this was sadly down to some basic attitudes, maintenance and cookery.

We booked a one night break for our anniversary, having spent a nice day in Shrewsbury we arrived at the hotel on a wet afternoon. On booking in we were told that we were in the new wing, which we were informed to get there we would have to go back outside in the rain and walk around the hotel to get there. On asking if there was an inside route, as I didn't fancy getting wet again, we were told that we coudl try going through the conference rooms, but they may be locked. This response was given in a way that implied - what's your problem with walking outside in the rain with your bags and a toddler? This type of attidude I found was standard from reception.

We opted for the outside route so juggling bags, toddler and an umberella we made a trip to the room. On first inspection this was fine, nice large room, clean, tidy and enough space for the family. We got ready for swimming and having used the bathroom we heard a funny noise, but thought nothing of it as probably just a one off. Spent the next few hours in the pool - small but very nice - and having dinner in the bar - good service, nice staff and good food. Children's menu was good, but a lighter option (e.g. sandwiches) would have been apreciated.

On returning to the room and using the facilities again, we discovered that the funny noise, was actually a problem with the plumbing. Every time we flushed the toilet a fog horn type of noise happened. On contacting reception, they sent a member of staff (it was late, maintenance wasn't in), who informed us it could be air trapped in the system and proceded to run taps each time of flushing to try and sort it out. Being late, and with a very tired toddler, it was left that we would have to run taps everytime we flushed the toilet to stop the noise. At no point were we offered anytype of room change which would be normal, as it would seem logical to reception staff that running a tap each time you use the toilet was acceptable. If that wasn't then a noise that would wake up anyone within a 10 metre raidus was ok to carry on when you are trying to sleep.

The night's sleep was nice, except we didn't flush the toilet for fear of waking up the toddler!

On heading to breakfast we noticed signs that said they were expecting breakfast to be particularly busy at a certain time that morning. The notices were not very noticeable, and you would hope reception would have mentioned this on arrival, they didn't! Thankfully we got in just before the rush, however it was very noticable that the three staff on duty couldn't cope with the rush and nor could the kitchen. If you know there will be a rush - allocate more staff, it's basic management.

Although they did a good job, the staff just couldn't cope, food took a long time to be replenished, our sausages were not cooked (meaning we didn't have a full english breakfast), and catching staff members eyes was difficult. To give them credit once the rush was over, they were very attentive and nice.

On checking out the conversation went a little like this-
Reception; was the noise sorted?
Me; no not at all, the solution was that we had to run the taps each time we flushed
R: so the noise was sorted then?
M: No it's still there, we had to run the taps when we wanted to flush!
R: Looked at me as if to say, so what's the issue then?
M: Look at reception - you are 4* hotel that's the issue!

On having paid for the food we had had, I then mentioned that the break wasn't great, and that breakfast was not cooked. Having not been asked how the rest of our stay was.

Receptionists response - well post your issues on trip advisor!

Hence my first review in 4 years - we expect more from this level of hotel, we expect to be able to walk to our room in the dry, and to be able to flush our toilet at night.

So all in all a very mixed bag - the type of unpolished customer service you would expect from a lower standard of hotel, but some bits of quality.

My husband and I enjoyed a perfect 2 night break at this hotel. The service was good. The room was really lovely, clean, well appointed and with luxury touches. The food was superb, quality ingredients and cooked perfectly. We also enjoyed a few spa treatments. A truly relaxing luxurious break.
