Booked two rooms for a night away with my sister & husband for her belated 40th birthday, chose Shrewsbury as not too far for just one night (hotel is about 10 mins drive from town centre, taxi on a Sat night only £5 each way). Booked through Mercure website, £98 per room including breakfast. I asked in advance for quiet rooms and we got them, rooms 1 & 2, whilst in main building slightly strange to get there, but the only two rooms on a corner, and quiet as requested. Both rooms were very spacious, four poster bed, fridge (good for the champagne & strawbs we had brought with us), clean (I am very fussy) and comfortable. Reception staff were friendly on arrival and whenever we passed there, also booked us a taxi to town. All other staff encountered greeted us. We all used the leisure facilities, the one criticism would be that to get from the pool & Jacuzzi to the sauna & steam rooms you had to dash through to a freezing cold room where those facilities were based. November not ideal time to explore the grounds but it’s a nice setting. We did not have our evening meal in the hotel as we went in to town (Romolo restaurant & bar thoroughly recommend) but the restaurant looked inviting. Breakfast, buffet style, good & hot, reasonable choice, one of our party very pleased to see black pudding. I only eat eggs scrambled, none on buffet, when I asked, no problem they like to do them freshly in small batches so few minutes later they arrived.
We used the bar once we returned for the evening, hotel bars tend to be dearer on drinks, so be it for a nightcap. There were a good few people in there so had a bit of atmosphere but bit light on bar staff.
Overall we enjoyed our short stay, if we had cause to stay in Shrewsbury area again I would have no hesitation to choose this hotel.

Have just finished a stay of 4 nights here on a business trip (I travel approx 70-80% of the year and am fussy) and have lots of good things to say about this place. Not sure what all the Christmas guests were moaning about!
Picturesque location, nice big clean warm room, comfy bed and plenty of hot water at all times, free parking and excellent leisure/gym facilities. The housekeeping, bar and breakfast staff were great. Ate in the bar every night and found the menu to be varied and food quality was very good indeed. As a single female traveller, I had no problem relaxing on the big couches in the bar area in front of the telly without any unwanted attention. My only suggestion for improvement would be to have free wifi at least in the public areas. Definitely plan to stay here again when business brings me back this neck of the woods.

Albrighton Hall could be an excellent country house hotel. It is a beautiful old building with some stunning public rooms (most notably the dining room) and a decent pool and spa. However, we were left disappointed by a number of aspects which pointed at poor management and under-investment by the owners (Mercure).

Firstly, the check-in desk was unmanned upon our arrival and on several subsequent occasions throughout our stay. At check-in, we were directed back out of the entrance to the adjacent accommodation block to find our room. We could not understand why we had been directed into the freezing cold when we subsequently discovered that we could have got to our room without going outside, albeit along a rather scruffy looking corridor with meeting rooms and open linen closets and storage rooms.

Our room was spacious and nicely decorated but let down by a number of small things which indicated a lack of attention to detail: the toilet seat would not stay up of its own accord, a missing cupboard handle, cheap low quality toiletries and only one bedside lamp. We requested a second lamp after dinner on our first night but despite two further calls to reception, we never received one.

Shortly after our arrival we went to try to use the pool and spa but found it to be closed. When we enquired at reception, we were told that it had closed early as it was a bank holiday (New Year's Day). With a hotel full of paying guests, it seems a bit unreasonable for the leisure facilities to be closed at 5.30pm whatever day it is.

The most disappointing aspect of our stay, however, was the dining. The hotel's website claims that the restaurant was "recently awarded 2 AA rosettes". I took this at face value when booking but, having now experienced the basic food on offer, I have checked the AA website to find no mention at all of the Oak Room restaurant at Albrighton Hall (not to be confused with the nearby Albright Hussey Manor). We could not believe that the staples of the menu were pie and chips, shepherd's pie and fish and chips! And even the "fine dining" options were no more inspiring than lamb shank, chicken breast wrapped in bacon and steak and chips. It was all very basic pub fayre. The beautiful dining room (and the paying guests) deserve much better.
