Thank you so much for such a very memorable week at this divine castle. It was just incredible. Our memories of the pool sessions, cooking French cuisine in your gorgeous fully-equipped kitchen, exploring the beautiful grounds and area Chatel Gerard will last a LIFETIME. This castle is so pretty, unique, comfortable and so accomodating and close enough to so many other amazing towns. We will be back! Merci. Carmen & Zac x
We stayed in this beautiful place for a blissful week and held our French wedding celebration dinner (we had already been married back home in Aus) in the garden with the Chateau as the backdrop. The chateau is a truly unique experience, steeped in history with many picturesque villages and walks nearby to explore. Or you can just enjoy lazing by the pool with a glass of local rose in hand!
The agency, Bourgogne Maison, was also extremely helpful and accomodating in assisting us to plan our event and recommended the local caterers, Maison Paillot, to us.
We hope we get to visit one day again!
We arrived just after a snowfall and in the castle grounds although the snow was melting there was a patchwork of pristine snow to welcome us. Entering the castle I thought I had an idea of what to expect but was gob-smacked by the size and grandeur of the place. The ground floor and 1st floor have retained the original layout. Huge rooms, stone walls, timbered ceilings and huge fire places just oozing history. The interior was wonderfully warm with excellent central heating.
Hardly wanted to leave the atmosphere of the castle but there was plenty to do outside. Walks and trips to markets and historical towns and villages. Altogether an amazing experience. Can't recommend it enough.
In August 2016 we spent 1 week with family at Chateau Gerard. It
surpassed my expectations from the moment we entered the medieval castle with all modern cons. The bedrooms on the 2 upper floors are large with beautiful bed linen and fluffy towels. The kitchen on the ground floor is spacious enough to prepare a sumptuous dinner, or just heat up the beautiful delicacies we bought mostly in the nearby gorgeous village of Noyers-Sur-Serein. The grand dining room we used only twice, as the weather was so perfect, we had most of our meals on the terrace, and pre-dinner drinks on the turret.
There was plenty to explore in the area by car. We visited the Romanesque church in Vezelay, the abbey in Fontenay, the caves in D’Arcy, wineries in Chablis and Irancy, and the medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois. Coming home to the castle we always had a relaxing swim in the resort-style pool, which was a pleasant 25C. We would love to come back to explore more of the area, while living in a medieval castle.
Our adventure at Chateau Gerard began after a wonderful train journey from Saltsburg, Austria to Dijon in France, where we collected our rental car (you will need a car), and headed out into the beautiful French country side.
We drove into Chateau Gerard on a warm summer evening to be welcomed by the manager who had turned on the lights, and placed a welcoming bottle of bubbles in the fridge. After an orientation of this amazing castle and a brief freshen up we drove to the delightful nearby village of Noyers-sur-Serein just a short 10 minute drive from Chatel-Gérard. Here we discovered shops full of delightful French provisions, fresh bread, amazing cheeses, pate, fresh tomatoes and fabulous wine. We were a little tired so saved further exploring of the village for another day.
Arriving back at the chateau we kicked of our shoes, and just relaxed. After the best sleep in an amazing bed surrounded by so much history and medieval architecture (wrapped around all the modern conveniences you would ever need in a castle) we woke ready to explore. The morning light filtering through the trees and into our room set the scene for the day ahead. We were keen to explore every little nook and cranny, familiarizing ourselves with the space and imagining the wonderful family holidays that we could spend there.
There are three large sitting rooms, 10 bedrooms lots of bathrooms, stairways to turrets, a library and basements to explore. I plan to cook a family dinner on the fabulous stove someday and sit everyone around the huge dining table. We loved the pool and the summer days, and how much fun it would be to be there in the cooler months and light the fire in the main sitting room. And for those who like to watch TV, or listen to music, everything you will need is available to use.
Each day, after a good sleep and lazy breakfast, we drove out to discover the surrounding villages to loose ourselves for a while. We explored Noyers, and met many of the locals as we sat and sipped coffee in the shade. We loved the architecture of this little village and explored the market and lost ourselves in the wandering streets and alley ways.
On another day we drove a little further to Avalon. A much larger town where you could buy anything you could possibly need. We explored Vezelay and visited the amazing church on the hill, wandering and dining to our hearts content- and we drove through villages and country side absorbing the culture and delights of the Burgundy region.
But each day, we were keen to return to our amazing and magical Chateau Gerard. Some days we swam in the beautiful pool, others we slept the hot afternoons away only to awaken to a glass of crisp French wine and a stroll around the grounds. We discovers wood lands and alley ways and by the end of the week were sad to say good bye.
As we look back at our photos we remember Chateau Gerard sitting there in the French countryside for over 1000 years, and we can look forward to our next visit.
Thank you for opening this beautiful castle to visitors and for letting us be a little part of its grand history.
What a fabulous hideaway in Burgundy. We really loved Chateau Gerard - A Castle hidden away in the medieval village of Chatel Gerard just minutes away (by car) from Noyers - One of the designated Beautiful Villages of France. This whole area is packed with stunning villages, quiet roads, world heritage listed historical sites, vineyards, restaurants and artisans presenting their handiwork to the locals and tourists alike.
We had such a wonderful time exploring this area whilst based in this beautiful castle. This castle is fantastic, with a great blend of medieval rustic charm and modern comfortable rooms with all the trimmings we expect as modern day tourists. Clean modern en suites and bathrooms, comfortable beds, beautiful linen, fully equipped kitchen, wifi, TV room, library, pool, outdoor area and privacy.
All the rooms are huge, clean, comfortable and cosy. The thick stone walls provide a quiet and well insulated environment. This castle has all the fun and fantasy that we imagined, afternoon tea with local cheese and biscuits on the turret with a view of the surrounding town and farming fields, a library in another turret, our en-suite in another turret. Sipping local wines and basking in the mild french sun by the pool. Fresh baguettes, cheese, fruit, and other meals prepared in the kitchen. We would have liked to have found the chef that Alan from Brooklyn managed to arranged for their stay in the castle - next time.
With 10 bedrooms you can bring your friends and family and have a fantastic getaway.
We thoroughly enjoyed this castle and will make it our new home when next we visit Burgundy.
Thank you to the owners and managers for making this a highlight of our 2016 Europe holiday.

Thank you so much. We loved every room, every beam, every stone. The atmosphere was great as filled with family, friends, laughter, good wine and good food. We followed every recommendation on the Castle’s dedicated website and found new gems too, like Epoisses, that definitely requires a visit. At Chatel-Gérard, I met Marie-Ange, the lady who “owns the key of the town” working at the council, at the post office etc. We also met the new owner of the épicerie, Mme Flot, who is great, and I’ll forward her number so that guests can order their bread before they even leave for the castle! We also found a good place for horse riding,MADAME SEVERINE SOURD, ECURIE DE LA FONTAINE 89200 ANNEOT, which was the girls’ highlight. For me, Noyers, the Grottes D’Arcy, the market in Chablis, the lunch at Maison Paillot were some of mine. We were so lucky with the weather too. so thank you so much for a fabulous stay!
