“A hidden treasure in the Dordogne/Aquitaine borderland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2009

La Vieille Maison lies off the beaten track in the borderland of the Dordogne and Aquitaine, about 90 minutes drive from Bergerac airport. The 17thC origins of the hotel are manifested in the individuality of the carefully restored rooms, each with characterful features. The romantic location and quiet ambience would be ideal for a honeymoon. The en-suite facilities are spotless and well-maintained. A nice suite of rooms on the top floor is ideal for family occupation. After a hot day (37C in June 2009) it was great to cool off in the good-sized pool, from the terrace of which there are lovely views of the surrounding countryside and its hill-top villages. The food from the restaurant is delicious and the service attentive. Your only problem is to find this little treasure! Good hunting!

We were staying here to finalise our wedding plans and the entire stay was perfect. Great location and nothing was too much trouble for the owners. The food was delicious and a very relaxing hotel. HIghly recommended.

This is a stylish little hotel offering great value for money and serving food and wine at prices which it would be hard to beat anywhere. Nothing was too much trouble and we were given good suggestions for local day trips. They have refurbished most if not all of the rooms and anybody who went there before the present management took over wouldbe amazed at the transformation that they have achieved.

Great tradional style rooms, excellent food and lovely views over the surrounding area. Small peaceful village, but plenty around to discover. Shame about the weather but it was December! Would be great later in the year with the swimming pool to dive into!

Hotel was very quaint and in a lovely setting but the owners were obviously getting fed up at the end of the season. This was their first season and it showed. Attention to detail lacking. No change of bedding during 8 day stay. Cups and glasses in the room not washed or replaced. Breakfast just cereal and pain au chocolat and croissants every day but they did buy us some yoghurt and made us toast after a couple of days. Evening dinner was the same meat and fish every night with just a change of sauce. Vegetables didn't seem to change at all. We requested an early breakfast on our last day as we needed to leave early but no-one turned up. We had to find some milk in the kitchen and leave without coffee or tea. I guess they didn't care as we had paid our bill the night before. Not good. I think they are just catering for the people who stay a night or two and not for those who are there for a week or more. When we requested a refund and a small amount of compensation (only asked for 16 euros) we were told that as we had used the internet twice for about 10 minutes each time that the refund would cover the charge for that. No charge was mentioned at the time at all. Very unprofessional.

As mentioned in the above review, it is our first year and we have made a few mistakes which we apologise for.

We strive to please every single one of our customers, whether staying one night or one week, and we ask that our guest inform us if they have any problems or issues so that we can rectify these immediatly. Unfortunaley the above guests said nothing of there problems , which makes it very hard to sort out their concerns.

Our menu changes on a weekly basis, we use fresh local ingredients from the surrounding markets and buy depending on what is available for that time of year. We could easily go and buy from the cash and carry or supermarket, making it easier to change the menu and vary it more, but we support the local communities and will only by from the markets and local suppliers. Maybe we did have the same vegetables on the menu, but not all week. The two nights that the above guest's ate yes, but these are fresh from our garden, and very tasty. No one else staying during that time seemed to mind.

I apoligise for missing breakfast, that was a mistake on my part and there is no excuse for something like that.

We pride ourselves on our attention to detail and a friendly relaxed atmosphere in a beautiful corner of the world and we encourage and appreciate all feedback so that we can improve our service to you and make your stay more enjoyable.

La Vielle Maison is an old french farm house full of character and very charming. This is a family run business and you are made to feel very welcome. They have created a very relaxing environment.I found the food to be very good, alot of the fruit and veg used are grown within the grounds of the hotel.
I suggest a visit to Brantome whilst you're there.Google it -It's gorgeous.

We enjoyed our break at this lovely family run hotel. The owners were very welcoming and did all they could do to make our stay enjoyable. Although it was sunny during the day the nights were still chilly in early April, so they provided additional heating in the bedroom. The room was comfortable and well furnished and the food excellent. A great base for exploring the Dordogne, with opportunity to relax by the pool or take a walk along the quiet country roads.

  • Liked — The character of the hotel, the warm welcome and the food.
