We stayed here on our way back to Santander for the ferry, but would go back again to El Pomar (El Polmar) just for the lovely location and friendly Spanish welcome. The site is nested in a woodland setting up in the hills / mountains of Novalles - a charming little village. We went here as we wanted a stop-over 'with a pool' and that's what we got. The Hotel had a well maintained, good sized pool, ideal for families with children. Especially nice for us was that this was a small hotel (Hosteria) off the beaten track, where everyone was Spanish and no one spoke English, so it felt like a holiday in a different culture, rather than an Anglised simulation of 'back home'. The friendly welcome was from other guests, as well as from our hosts, and everyone helped us out, with our small understanding of Spanish language and cuisine. Look, to a seasoned traveller this may not be exactly 'the real Spain' but we enjoyed a couple of nights here feeling that we had briefly experienced a 'getting away from it all' Spanish retreat. It is a traveller's hotel, ideal for short stops overs en route to your next destination, but El Pomar is worth putting on your itinerary.

This place is off the beaten track in a lovely area of northern Spain. While there were 70 rooms at the property, it was all full, but we were only one of two non Sppanish families ove rth ecourse of the week. It is a wonderful base to explore this less commercialised area of Spain, near gorgeous beaches, and close to the Pico De Europa National Park. The food was very ordinary - don't go for hte all inclusive offer...there is only so much meat and potato and white sauce you can eat. Rooms are very nice, and the setting is rural and lovely adn very quiet. It is a family owned property, and somewhat disorganised in its booking system, but overall it was worth the effort for the sense of authenticity.
