“beautiful rooms with character”

truly a stunning hotel with views to match. the rooms are opulent we stayed in the ribbons room which has a gorgeous view overlooking the grounds. the bed was king size, comfortable and the bed linen pristine. the complimentary shampoo, shower gel etc. was replenished after every use with soft white flannel, bath towels and dressing gown. The shower cubicle was large and very well maintained. The food was first class and the waiting staff were faultless, we were made to feel most welcome especially by the gentleman by the name of Gordon who was in our opinion a pleasure to be served by, The furnishing in the hotel lounge and dining room are in keeping with the period of the hotel with i presume original paintings of the family who used to live there. i definately recommend a visit and will bereturning there as soon as possible.

Absolutely loved our stay here last night - we were made so welcome. The hotel entrance is stunning set at the end of a long drive in gorgeous grounds. The receptionist allocated us a superb room the Applestore which was just amazing with a sofa, armchairs and chaise long and gorgeous comfy king size bed with beautiful sheets and a massive bathroom with a shower and a bath and a good sized fridge, kettle etc. Gorgeous views from the first floor and lovely and quiet. I have missed staying in hotels recently where they take your bags to the room and have room service and even clean your shoes overnight. The weather was lovely so we enjoyed walks in the grounds and in the area. The hotel seemed a great location for getting to other places for sightseeing like Woodbridge and Lavenham which was amazing. Breakfast was superb and the service was first class. Can't recommend this hotel highly enough. Want to go back soon. Thanks to all the staff that made us so welcome.

Room Tip: the Applestore is in an annexe to the side of the main hotel on the first floor so no one can see in...

Staying here is like being on the set of a period drama. Ornate rooms, high ceilings, lush furnishings and immense paintings make this hotel something really special. A wonderful base in which to stay and explore this part of the world.
Our meal in the restaurant was of the finest quality and the waiting staff were extremely courteous, as were all the staff in the hotel.
Our room, located on the third floor up a series of creaky stairs was named 'Arcadia'. It was huge, probably measuring some 30' in length, with a king sized bed, and tucked away at the far end was an en-suite with a marvellous rain forest shower.
The only negative I could see was the absence of a lift, so those finding stairs an issue, be warned.
Otherwise, top marks for this lovely hotel.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a superior room or mini suite if you can afford it. It's definitely worth it.

Firstly the good news lovely traditional old hotel, with lovely rooms, restaurant, and friendly staff, however this purports to be 5 star, unfortunately due to lack of attention to the small but important matters that make this type of hotel outstanding, they have fallen into the ordinary category. The room we had Zoffany was lovely and fullof character but the bathroom was a let down, the shower was old with a cracked tile and some black mould and to top it all the shower only dribbled a situation that should never happen in a hotel of this quality there was an old carpet threshold and carpet in the toilet, not very hygenic in this day and age. As part of our deal two course dinner was included, I had a tea cup size bowl of soup, and a medley of seafood main course which was tasty but would not have fed a mouse. Breakfast was adequate the porridge was of poor quality and the choice of cefeals and fruit was poor for this standard of hotel I have had far superior choice at some 3 star hotels. The cooked breakfast was good with some local quality sausages. We also had afternoon tea which was good but not outstanding the scones were lovely but no clotted cream, the sandwiches were very ordinary with some crusts on and some off, some of the bread was dry and not of a particularly good quality and at £16.50 per person not value for money. When we went down to breakfast at about 9am they were hoovering a d cleaning in public areas and we had to step over cables etc. This could be such a wonderful hotel but needs investment and some good management, as I said so near yet so far.

Room Tip: Zoffany is a lovely room but bathroom particularly the shower not up to modern standards1

Thank you for your kind comments regarding the hotel, Zoffany bedroom, our restaurant and the hotel’s friendly staff. Please accept our apologies that the bathroom was a disappointment to you and that you experienced problems with the water pressure, this was addressed as soon as it was brought to our attention, unfortunately a problem associated with an Historic Hotel.
Our afternoon tea is served with Chantilly cream, traditional for this part of the world, our cakes and scones homemade, and sandwiches made and cut to order.

Have recently returned from a three night stay at this hotel. First the good. Hotel is full of character, if thats what you like, sloping floors, large open fireplaces. There are lots of good country walks, reception can give you details with maps etc. Staff are all very young but are pleasant and efficient. The breakfasts are excellent, plenty to choose from and you can order from the hot menu and have food freshly cooked. Loved this as hate hot breakfast buffets.

The not so good. Evening meals a bit hit and miss. Maybe ordered wrong thing sometimes. First night food was quite poor but after that a lot better apart from a pear crumble dessert that was very bland and watery.

Stayed in room named Ribbons. Its a superior room which they recommended when i booked and after i pointed out that i wanted a quiet room as am a very light sleeper. The room is lovely, clean nice bathroom, not as big as it looks on thier advertisment and is quite dark as only one window and you have to strain your neck to see a view. However was very disappointed as quiet room this is not.It has a main fire door opposite with a staircase that leads downstairs to main areas. This door is in constant use and always left open! You also hear other doors slamming throughout the day and evening. Being so old the building vibrates so with every bang you feel as well as hear it. Lastly although didnt get a bad rate for DBB the drinks are VERY expensive, £6 for a small bottle of lager.

Overall a nice stay, came home relaxed but tired due to lack of sleep, not quiet enough for me, and will choose somewhere else next time.

Went here with one friend for afternoon tea. Decor and service were great but the afternoon tea itself was a let down. The cream was whipped rather than clotted for the scones and the pastry on the tart was overcooked and very dry. In addition the cream in the éclairs and tarts did not taste right, in fact almost had an acidic taste. We were also not offered a choice of tea which I would expect. I've had much better afternoon teas elsewhere for less money.
