“Relax in the Auvergne”
Reviewed 20 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

My wife and I recently spent a very relaxing two weeks at La Vachere. We occupied the Chez Elise gite which is absolutely fabulous and is one of two well-appointed gites available from the owners. The other gite is Chez Antoinette. The owners are very welcoming and helpful and have clearly put a great deal of time and effort into making the gites the perfect home from home. They even have bikes that can be borrowed if you are up for a little bit of exercise and can always point you in the right direction for a good walk or day out.

La Vachere is situated about 800m above sea level in the unspoilt Livradois Forez National Park and is a small hamlet in the Chameane commune of the Auvergne. It is set in the heart of traditional farming country and pleasingly distant from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Chez Elise is set over two levels. The ground floor is open plan with a well equipped kitchen/dining area and comfortable seating area with CD player, UK satellite television and free Wi-Fi. There is every household appliance you’d need including fridge/freezer, dishwasher, gas hob and oven, microwave, toaster, kettle, iron etc. The first floor comprises a spacious double bedroom and large shower room with wc, twin sinks and large shower with lashings of hot water. The washing machine is also located in the shower room. The bedroom has a fantastically comfortable king-size bed with a window overlooking the front of the property. There is plenty of storage room in the bedroom and shower room. The building, due to the thickness of the traditional stone construction and use of window shutters, benefits from being cool when it is hot, which it was when we were there, and warm when it is cooler outside. There is a log burner in the ground floor area which, if needed, would turn Elise into a super snuggly retreat in the autumn and winter months.

Chez Elise benefits from a comfortable outside area where we ate breakfast and other meals at the table under the parasol.

The pace is lovely and slow and there was nothing better than going for a walk and then really enjoying that bottle or two of wine in the evening.

La Vachere is about 25 minutes from the Issoire which sits on the A75 AutoRoute which is main route north and south through the centre of France. Issoire is a very historic town with much to see and is a must visit when you stay at La Vachere (http://www.francethisway.com/places/issoire.php). You will definitely visit Issoire if only to stock up at the Carrefour Supermarket just off Junction 12 of the A75 and on the edge of the town. The choice and value of locally produced cheeses, other dairy products, wines, breads, meats etc will take you aback. Can I recommend the Mousse Du Canard, Fromage du Chevre et Brebis (a cheese made with goat’s and ewe’s milk) and pan du seigle (Rye Bread) washed down with one of the incredible value rose or red wines. The mall in which the Carrefour is located also has a bar/restaurant (we had beautiful slow cooked veal with ratatouille for lunch one day), many other retail outlets and a cracking wee tea room at the main entrance which is ideal for a pot of freshly brewed tea and an ‘emergency’ croissant.

The main road from Issoire to La Vachere is the D999 and offers spectacular views over the Auvergne countryside. The D999 takes you through the nearest village of Vernet La Verenne (http://www.vernetlavarenne.fr) which has a small supermarket, bakery, butchers, pharmacy and regular street markets and brocantes. Vernet is less than a 10 minute drive or an hour’s walk and has a fresh water swimming lake and recreation ground with pedalos, tennis and bar/café.

Chameane is less than a five minute walk from the gite and has fantastic local Auberge (Auberge de a Source) which is ran by Anthony Pillet. Anthony will even take orders for bread and croissants for collection the next day and is a great place for a coffee or beer during the day, lunch or evening meal. I even understand that Anthony will prepare meals for takeaway the next day if you ask him. Lunch is the main meal and the Plat du Jour which comprises starter, main, cheese course and dessert is of such a high standard and good value you may wonder why you’d even think of cooking for yourself. My favourite was the steak and chips. The auberge has an interior dining room and a terrace where drinks and meals can be taken.

On the subject of food there are other Auberges nearby that are a must if you are out and about and are looking for lunch or evening meal. We had a day out to Usson (http://www.auvergne.fr/article/usson) which is about 20 minutes away, climbed up to the statue of the Virgin Mary and had lunch at the auberge (http://www.auberge-margot.com/).
Another notable place to eat is Bar Le St Thomas (www.barstthomas.fr) where a truly fantastic set price evening meal can be had for 21 euros. The bar is situated in St Genes La Tourette which is about 10 minutes by car from the gite.

There are other auberges doted around nearby that will undoubtedly offer great food at exceptional value; just get out there and explore.

La Vachere makes a perfect base for which to explore the Auvergne and immerse yourself in rural French lifestyle. We were fortunate enough to be there at the same time as the annual Chameane fete. We participated in the petanque competition (won one, lost three!) during the day and came back for the meal and entertainment in the evening. Anthony from the Auberge was in charge of the meal and did us all proud.

We will definitely return. I thoroughly enjoyed having a go with my very rusty French and was struck by the friendliness of everyone we met.

“Perfect place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you.”
Reviewed 4 June 2015 for a stay in July 2014

My wife and son and I stayed at Chez Elise for a week in July last year and we had a lovely relaxing holiday. The Gite is part of a beautiful old stone building, full of character inside and out and well equipped with everything we could need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. The area has outstanding natural beauty with incredible scenery wherever you look and the sunrises and sunsets during our stay were breathtaking. We were spoiled for choice with so many walking and cycling routes to choose from, and there's a small lake a few miles away where we could go swimming. We tried out a couple of restaurants close by and especially liked the Civadoux which is run by an amusing couple of sisters who were like a French, female version of the Marx brothers. All in all we had a great holiday and would recommend Chez Elise to anyone who is looking for a relaxing getaway in a place of outstanding natural beauty.

“Rural relaxation”
Reviewed 1 June 2015 for a stay in July 2013

A beautiful, very comfortable house in a delightfully peaceful rural setting. Perfect for relaxing and as a base for touring the area. Cycling to the swimming lake in the nearby village is fantastic day out.

“beautiful outside and in”
Reviewed 28 May 2015 for a stay in September 2014

My fourth trip to La Vachere, which is your French rural fantasy come true. I was working on a textbook this time: the peace and physical beauty make it a perfect place to think. On previous visits, I've come with friends and we have gone swimming, to the market, cycled, visited Issoire, fed donkeys, sat on the patio drinking wine and lots of other things. Lovely neighbours bring salad and don't smile when I mangle their language. Chez Elise is well-equipped and full of stylish touches. Waking up in it is a pleasure and leaving it is a wrench. I cannot over-recommend this gem of a gite.
