Villa Del Porto
Ranked #1 of 2 Kalkara B&B and Inns
Reviewed 17 May 2014

The Villa Del Porto offers a nice view over the port and the owner is friendly and helpful, and the service good. Room 204 (I don't know about the others) was quite small though and the bed laid through, and unfortunately did not have a view on the port. The place is nice, but at a busy road with single glazing makes it quite quite noisy. For the location, you can go for nice walks along the port and catch the ferry to Valletta, which is a beautiful ride (last ferry 18:15). You easily get back by bus line 3.

We were in this peaceful guesthouse for 4 days. The owner Aldo is absolutely fantastic and terribly kind, helping you any moment in planning your visits to the island of Malta. Ask for the transfer from airport! If you do not like chaos and touristic places, choose this small guesthouse about 20 minutes by bus n. 3 from Valletta (going through every 30 minutes, mind, last one is at 10 p.m. from Valletta!): when in Valletta any bus takes you anywhere in the island.
The rooms are different sizes, with fantastic view of the little and quiet harbour if you desire: ours was n. 302 on the third floor, really nice, large, bathroom with window, little balcony with chairs.
Good and complete self service breakfast on the 4th floor terrace, watching the little and coloured boats in the small harbour: nice way to start the long walking day!
Two restaurants at 50 mt from the guesthouse, one on the left at the corner of the church, a good pub with good food; the other on your right, close to the marina harbour, fantastic food and fish with very good prices.
More restaurants in Vittoriosa, in front of Kalkara, about 10 minutes walking, ask Aldo for the typical one!
When you will visit such places as Sliema or St. Julians you will then appreciate the silence of this little guesthouse and its relaxing bay!

Rooms are quite small, and best bring extra towels as they don't change them till you leave, after showering in the morning, towels still wet in the evening.
Pillows uncomfortable as inside it contains shredded foam. bed sheets too thin and coming off easily. big gap on shower frame in room 204 leaves water ingress on floor. Apart for that host great and helpful. and the hotel excellent views across Birgu and Valletta. Regular bus service to Valletta. Airport Bus X7 drop off and pick up from Birgu, takes 15 mins walk

Room Tip: rooms on 3rd and fourth floor on the front of hotel gives good views

I've read good reviews about this hotel and my stay was even above the expectations. The host - Aldo - is extremely helpful and courteous. I got a single room on the ground floor first, it was a bit noisy, and Aldo had immediately arranged a different - a twin - room for me for the same price for the rest of my stay. He also allowed a late free checkout on the day I was leaving.

The rooms are quite comfortable, all the necessities are there in a perfect working order. You might want to watch the hot water spending in the morning, not a problem for the rest of the day.

There's a bus #3 stop (Kalkara stop) in 100 meters from the hotel, goes directly to Valetta every 1/2 hr (1 hr on Sunday). Can trust the timetable. More buses to Valetta and the airport in a 10 min walk (Fortini stop - you might want to get off there on the way back since the bus goes around the Kalkara town to get back to the Kalkara bus stop).

A couple of convenience stores are close to the hotel. They don't have fruits and vegetables, however, you can buy those in the morning from a stall that's near the bus stop.

Birgu and Senglea in walking distance, two very charming little towns with a rich history - check out the little museum near the St Lawrence cathedral in Birgu
A late eve stroll along the empty streets of the Colacchio district in Birgu is quite romantic. :-)

All staff we came into contact with at Villa del Porto were courteous, friendly and helpful. We had pre-booked an airport transfer and were made to feel very welcome by the staff who collected us.
Our room, 202, had a wonderful view from the balcony (please see attached picture). Our first evening was a Saturday, and the traffic noise from the road outside was very noticeable. It is worth saying, however, that subsequent evenings were quieter, and Aldo very kindly offered us an alternative room should we wish to move.
Staff also assisted us with planning our sightseeing whilst in Malta and made helpful suggestions.
Kalkara is not a touristy area, but we were glad to be able to experience the local community and culture. A bar 5 minutes walk from the hotel "Supernova Heights" offers decent meals with a selection of local wines and beers (please note: portion sizes in Malta are generous!)
Villa del Porto is also a few minutes walk from the nearest bus stop. We never waited more than 5 minutes for a bus; a day ticket cost 1 euro 50 and could be used until 11 at night. Very useful for getting to and from Valletta.
Breakfast was more than adequate, continental style, with cereals, breads, yogurts, meat and cheese.
One minor irritation was that hot water didn't seem to be all that plentiful, and ran out fairly quickly.
Over-all, though, Villa del Porto offers excellent value for money and the customer service we received was second to none.

Stayed here from 14th-16th March, check in was easy, Aldo was lovely and welcoming, he even called me in the morning to see what time wwe would be arriving so he could have the room ready.
The room was large with a very comfortable bed, the shower was spacious and had plenty of hot water. Breakfast was served on the roof and was lovely, including cereals, ham, cheese and fresh fruit, when we got back to our room the maid had already cleaned our room which was a nice surprise.
I would definitely stay here again, thank you to Aldo and his staff for such a lovely quite weekend away :)
