The Olmec heads are awesome, the sad part is seeing the caged animals. The heat makes it difficult to enjoy seeing all of the carvings. I spent about an hour here and got out, not much more to do here.

The zoo and the olmec pieces are a great way to while away a few hours. The park surrounding the zoo was filled with families enjoying picnics. The observation tower is free and the climb is great, as is the view from the deck up top. When we were there in early May there were tons of pink blossomed trees all over Tabasco and in Villahermosa as well. From the park they lined the river and it was stunning. One does not have to look far to see the evidence of neglect in the park. It is a bit litter strewn and unkempt in places with accumulated vegetation. Main sidewalks are broken in places. It is not uncommon to see these things in Mexico, however this park deserves better from the city and or state.

The olmecs heads are a MUST SEE in Villahermosa. The history behind them are amazing and it is cheap to go... if you have student ID it is 10 pesos a ticket. WORTH IT !
The zoo part of the park I didn't liked so much just because it seems like the animals are in a small place and I got the feeling that there were not properly being taken care of....
other than that... a nice place to visit.

Very well done for a small regional archeological park. The museum is part archeological, part zoo animals. If you're in Villahermosa for a couple of hours looking for something to do, make sure to pop in and take a stroll through.

We arrived at Villahermosa especially to be able to visit Parque-Museo La Venta, where many saved valuable exhibits of Olmec Culture, brought from the archeological zone of La Venta located at the extreme North of Mexican Tabasco state, are exposed to the public. It is a kind of combination of open air Olmec sculpture museum and a zoo and a good combination. Despite the very bad weather and constant rain we stayed around two hours in the park and enjoyed both the archeological displays and live animals (some of them like coati are freely move along the park).
We can recommend visiting the park if it is on your route, of course, and if you are interested in getting acquainted with the remains of the Olmec civilization.
