“One of our favorites”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2012

Great ambience, as mentioned in several of the other reviews. We had very attentive waiters and used a coupon with a three-course "tourist special" which worked out great. We noticed that we did not have a problem with the mosquitoes here, and the food was delicious!

“Quality not up to their prices”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2012

We had a meal here the night after going to El Huachinango Felix. Despite prices being 30% higher, the quality sadly wasn’t. The stuffed chicken we had as a little overcooked although no complaints about our Burritos and the portions served were good. It is a lovely outdoor setting and an ok experience but perhaps not at the prices they charge. There is also a mandatory 10% service charge added and quality of service provided didn't match up.

“Expensive and disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2011

The good

- Nice outdoor eating area, lighting is great, real jungle feel with surrounding trees; you look forward to the night ahead
- Reasonable guacamole entree

The bad

- The most expensive salad was composed mostly of tasteless shredded lettuce
- Fillet mignon was very bland, the mushroom sauce even worse, certainly nothing special, you'd struggle to do worse at home
- Tip/propina was added to the bill total by the restaurant (next to some garbled lettering), when i pointed this out I was told "oh it's an optional tip". Very deceptive and assuming.
- One of the more expensive restaurants here

Plenty of other restaurants in town. I'd avoid disappointment and give this one a miss, the ambience factor is achieved equally well by other restaurants nearby.

“Nice atmosphere & good food right on the downtown plaza”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2010

Note: There are multiple "Maya" restaurants in Palenque (the two I know of are: one in La Canada area and one on the Plaza downtown) and I am reviewing the one on the downtown Plaza.

We ate here on a Saturday which was really nice - vendors were all over the plaza and this restaurant has a great view of the plaza. The service was kind of slow but that seems to be everywhere in the Yucatan. We had Pollo Palenque (chicken cooked with beer) and carne chinacheca. The chinaceca sauce was great. The chicken was nothing special but really moist. What got annoying after a while was all the vendors would walk throught the restaurant trying to sell you things.

“Costa Maya Charlie Browns little bar”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2009

Feb 18th 2009 We were on the cruise ship The Independence of the Seas and had a wonderful day in Costa Maya. Our group 8 adults decided we just wanted to sit by the sea and drink a few. So one of our party had heard or read online about Charlie Browns so we gave it a try. After leaving the ship we hopped on a bus heading to the shops and bars the cost was $3.00 for the ride then when you take a short walk to the ocean go left and walk back towards the port. Charlie Browns is near the end of all the shops. He has buckets of beer for $10.00 and good shots of tequila for $5.00. We also ate fantastic guacamoli and chips, and used the chairs and umbrellas for free. The one negative was that the shoreline is quite rocky and there was some litter. He is a very friendly guy and there to please. Big plus is a clean restroom behind his bar. Thanks for a fun day Charlie.
