“good base for Palenque's amazing ruins”
Reviewed 26 November 2012

We stayed here for two nights as part of our tour of Mexico organised by Imagine Latin America. It’s a nice base for exploring the amazing Palenque ruins. The hotel is a short walk from the centre of town but the streets are safe and it is easy to find your way around. The rooms are a decent size and very clean. The grounds are lovely and very tranquil (during the day at least). There is a nice pool area for lounging around after a morning of sightseeing. There were a couple of big tour groups there during our stay so the bar and pool area did get a bit noisy in the evening. We didn’t have dinner in the hotel but the breakfast was OK and the lunch was nice.

We stayed here a couple of nights while we visited the ruins. The rooms are basic, clean, and adequate. This hotel is set up for large tour groups passing through to see Palenque. Thankfully, there were none there, and few other guests, because it was low season. The grounds are very nice, cut out of the jungle. You can hear the howler monkeys in the jungle. The service in the restuarant was very dissappointing, and I had several problems with checks. The highlight of our stay was the massage. The spa is located in the jungle, about 300 feet from the hotel. My massage was at 8pm, so it was dark as I walked down the long stairway to the spa. The ambient music and the sounds of the jungle, combined with a light rain, created a magical atmosphere. I then proceeded to receive when of the best massages I have ever had. Wobbling back up the stairs and back onto the hotel grounds was like emerging from a secret world back into reality.

Room Tip: schedule a massage after dark

Only stayed one night, but for me there was no atmosphere. The room size was fine but did not seem 'welcoming'. Ate in the restaurant - long tables, lots of big groups - and made an unfortunate choice of bbq for 2 which comprised strips of almost inedible 'meats'. Did not make a complaint as we had chosen it off the menu. Clean enough hotel and staff were pleasant, ok as a stopover but don't think I'd like to stay there more than the one night.

The hotel is located in really nice grounds just outside the town of Palenque - the opposite side of town to the ruins. The rooms are fairly basic though quite adequate for the amount of time that we spent in them. They're very clean and the A/C worked very well. The grounds are lovely complete with howler monkeys. The staff were overall professional except for the reception at times they very unhelpful and cheeky. We even caught one girl sneering at my wife and I every time we had to use the reception. At the checkout I'd had enough and let her know in no uncertain terms how unprofessional she was being. The management didn't answer our emails or respond when we called from san cristobal to enquire what the deal was. Basically you get what your given even if that includes bad manners. The restaurant staff though were good and friendly though the food wasn't great. Also be warned that bus loads of elderly German speaking tourists turn up and transform the dining room complete with alpine music. Bit bizarre in the middle of the jungle. Maybe music of a more local flavor would be just slightly more in keeping with the surroundings. Just a thought..
Besides the ruins at Palenque - getting up early for the Bonapak excursion is well worth the effort!

Room Tip: Best rooms are away from pool and restaurant area.

Nice setting, lovely warm pool, fairly basic rooms but comfortable enough; rather strange small "saloon" doors to the bathroom. Toilet blocked up overnight (perhaps the previous residents didn't know that this happens when you try to flush toilet-paper down the loo, instead of putting it in the bin provided...?!)
Avoided the buffet dinner as we'd read posts here about food being reheated, tho' it looked quite appetising. Had a la carte meal - OK, nothing memorable.
The evening entertainment consisted of 2 guys singing & playing musical instruments - DIRE! Then a dancing troupe - somebody's dancing school? (with their proud mums) It consisted of about 12 girls aged from about 6 - 15 and just one boy! - all heavily made-up, whose "dances" were waving their skirts about, not all in synch - a LOT more practice needed before a public appearance, we felt.

Outside the city of Palenque, modern – colorful & clean rooms, (very) large bed, AC, LCD TV, free Wi-Fi, massage facilities, 2 swimming pools, beautiful surrounding garden – very well maintained. Many tourist groups, families with children, live music until 22.00. The room walls provide VERY LOW noise insulation, anyway the outside noise level comes down after 22.30 when they close the swimming pools. The buffet breakfast is of quite a good variety and quality. Beside the noise level, this is a nice hotel if you stay for one-two days. We used “Mision Palenque” as a base to visit the Palenque, Bonampak and Yaxchilan archeological sites (all of them a “must see”!).

My husband and I stayed at the Mision Palenque for 2 nights beginning November 21, 2011. We were part of a tour group and had travelled a fair distance to get to Palenque the first day. We didn't arrive until it was dark about 700pm. As we were driving through this tiny village, I was a bit worried about the hotel we would be staying. I was very relieved when we drove into the parking lot of the Mision Palenque. It certainly wasn't a 5-star hotel but considering we were in a more remote part of Mexico, I don't think you can expect that kind of experience. We enjoyed the meals in the main dining area (all served buffet style). There were not many tour groups at this time of year but the staff were friendly and attentive even though there weren't many guests staying at the hotel. The rooms are either up or down about 10 steps. Basic rooms but comfortable enough. The hotel has a pool and is set in tropical gardens. You can easily walk into town. One odd thing was that we had to pick up the TV remote at the front desk and bring it back on checkout.
We also really enjoyed our day trip to the Palenque Mayan ruins - very beautiful place.
