We watched the series and decided we HAD to find this pub next time we were in Newcastle. We were not disappointed. The beers are brewed here and loved the wheat beer.

The food was amazing. We arrived at 2.30 ( end of lunch service) but not a problem 5 of us had stotties and sandwiches made and in front of us before the person that ordered got back form the bar!!!! We wanted crab and we had the most delicious loaded sandwiches and stotties to die for. Even the crisps were gourmet We want to go back when we want more than a butty. Can't wait. The beach is heaven even in March. What a find. Brilliant.

We visited 4 times over a week for drinks and food, lunch and evening. This is a delightful pub, no pretensions, just very good and some interesting beers, brewed on site, very good fresh, small menu food and warm, smiley people to run it, set in a lovely square overlooking the ever changing.

The local fish was really fresh, tasty and the whole meal was a gastronomic delight. The Ship's situation is cunningly hidden in a corner of the Newton square, which is the pub's other main attraction. We saw some local colour - a folky band who were pretty good, altho we missed the optimum time for a quiet meal earlier in the evening. Overall a sweet evening.

We stopped off at the Ship Inn for lunch - I'd been before a few years back and heard all the good reviews. It was a busy, lively, friendly local pub with a warm welcome from the wind. Enjoyed a good chat with the staff about my last visit and enjoyed a pint with Ploughman's. Almost all the ingredients are locally sourced, and you really can tell the difference. A very tasty lunch at a reasonable price - although if the place was much busier it might begin to spoil the prospects of a quiet lunch.

The only downside for us was that they did not take card payments. This may not be a problem for some but I usually only carry a small amount of cash and this limited our menu choices a little. Didn't detract from an enjoyable meal at all, however.

Reaching this remote Northumberland hamlet is a long drive just to discover they don't take cards. We could have just scraped the cash but also the whole place was packed out. People were sitting shoulder-to-shoulder...there were even a few braving the outside seats on this breezy February day.
The kippers smelled very tempting - the aroma started from 100 yards downwind of the place - and the food must be good to draw so many people but in the end we upped sticks and drove on to the Olde Ship Inn at Seahouses (see separate review) where we know the kippers are excellent, our cards are welcome and we can eat with elbows outstretched.
