This restaurant comes highly recommended and I can see why! Situated at the bottom of the hill at Low Newton by the Sea, this venue has the perfect location next to the bay. The food was delicious and reasonably priced (depending on what you have) - more sophisticated than you may expect from a pub type venue. There are a variety of ales on offer which I think also goes down well. The kitchen is quite small but our food came out quite quickly. Booking is recommended though, days in advance. The only quibble were slightly unfriendly staff (not many of them and they didnt seem to get on!). Even managed to see a barn owl flying over as we left which was a nice end to the evening. All in all, definitely one to visit, if only just for a drink after a walk round the bay.

The Ship Inn is a small, homely pub/restaurant in the picturesque hamlet of Low Newton by the Sea in Northumberland. This part of the Northumberland Coast is wonderful, with white sandy beaches, castles on rocky outcrops, lots of interesting wildlife...and very few people most of the time, thanks to the rather chilly sea! Low Newton sits at the north end of Embleton Bay, one of the best beaches in Northumberland.

The Ship Inn is more restaurant than pub, and apart from sunny summer afternoons when there are sometimes quite a few visitors, most of the time the customers are eating rather than drinking. Nevertheless, it's an informal, no table cloths, wooden floor boards and exposed stone walls type of place, with a log fire on colder nights.

The menu is dominated by locally-sourced produce and particularly sea food: there is a sample menu on the web site, supplemented by day specials on a blackboard above the bar. The food is straightforward but delicious, expertly cooked and served with friendly enthusiasm.

We've been a few times, and have never been disappointed, except one evening after a lovely summer's day when they had run out of food! It pays to book in advance, and be aware that they open early: it's busy by 7pm and the kitchen closes not long after 8pm.
