Oh dear, what a shame. We spent over 2 hours queuing for 8 minutes of screams and laughter. Sorry Coalhouse Fort, but I dont think the entry fee and queue time were worth it. The people in the tunnels were great and did the job they were there to do admirably. But the organisation above ground let them down.

We visited on the Halloween weekend to have a trip into the tunnels. The tunnels had been filled with volunteer actors who were playing the parts of infected patients / zombies superbly!!
My husband, brother, sister in law and I have never screamed or laughed so much.
I would recommend getting there early as the q's were long, but its well worth the wait. I wouldn't recommend it for young children as it was genuinely scary!!

Only open for a few hours once a month this fort is run by a very knowledgeable group of volunteers who guide you around the tunnels and magazines in which ammunition was stores.

The fort was used during WW11 by the Navy who operated a degaussing monitoring station to help protect London from mines being brought into the Thames.

There is an aviation museum in one of the casemates -most of the items having been dug up from around the area from the aerial warfare that took place in this area.

From the top of the fort there are spectacular views along the Thames estuary and afterwards you can take a circular walk around the outside of the fort to see newer war time remains. A walk map with details can be obtained from the Tourist Office just near the entrance to the fort.

We went here following a visit to the nearby Tilbury Fort. This is not as well presented, not benefiting from the assistance of English Heritage, but the entrance fee is modest, parking is free and are great views of the river to be enjoyed. Attached is a aviation museum that contains a collection of recovered parts from mostly WW2 RAF and Luftwaffe aircraft, with their history's, there are also some recovered parts from jet crashes after the war. Well worth a visit.

My wife and I visited at the bank holiday.

As well as the fort there are some interesting sights surrounding it and we'd recommend some good footwear to take advantage.

It's cheap to get in (£4) and there is free parking. Wondering around on your own is fine but you only get the real story and access to most of the fort via an organised tour - they are every 30 mins and very prompt.

The tunnels are worth it alone and provide an interesting insight into life in the fort.

Food provision is average - we'd recommend brining a picnic and enjoying the lovely area around the fort.

Very enjoyable but make sure you take the tour.
