They have new books in. I was only calling in to check a newspaper, and see if a computer was free. On overhearing what subject I'd be interested in a member of staff went about fetching all the new books on that topic. I hadn't asked for help, they were just a blizzard of energy and positivity. I went out happy, with an arm full of good stuff.
The place is great - it has a toilet, free Internet with a free (cut-down) version of Ancestry.com, free newspapers and magazines, a kids' area, comfy chairs here, a table to work at there, sunny windows, posters on all local events, a BIG buggy parking place, all on the level with wide doors and power buttons to open them. The staff are amazingly helpful, even with questions that are nothing to do with normal library stuff.

Whitehead Library has everything from books to magazines, newspapers to CDs. The staff are most accommodating and will also help you with the computers. They have free Internet there. They have social get-togethers where people in the "Knit and Natter" or the book club group meet. The staff even have tea and biscuits ready for them. They do story-telling from books weekly for the children. They always have new decorations everywhere for every seasonal festival and occasion. Well worth a visit, several times a week. There's big controls to open all the doors automatically if you are in a wheelchair, and you can put your baby buggies out in the lobby.

The staff are very good, and very helpful. The library is open 4 days each week., and you can use computers and see some newspapers. There's an area for the kids, and a computer round there reserved for them. They also do some classes and special events, including a punch and judy show!

I bring my children here to do their homework after school - other children come and do the same so theres no complaining about it unlike home! The staff are very helpful with strange book requests - a lovely sunny atmosphere to while away your time!

Whitehead Library is today bedecked with all things Chinese, to celebrate their calendar's new year. It is really quite a show. I think the most glorious items are two sets of silk clothing (pyjamas?) which are all intricately decorated with scenery stitched in gold, yellow and blue. They have one of those scooped straw hats, a real one, made in China and brought back from there. You'll see tiny terracotta warriors, plus a horse. For kids the most fun items might be the parade of animals that represent the cycle of years. As this goes to press they have impressivley assembled a rat, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat (it's a marvel), monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. They're still after an ox, but may settle for a cow.

I'll confess I have never been to China, so all of this is a very welcome educational exhibit. They've planned all sorts of events for the kids on this theme.

How do they manage to put on such a show? Mainly it is tons of hard work by the staff. A bonus is the goodwill of many in the town who love and appreciate all that they do; people are glad to lend them some exotic and extraordinary items.

All this extra work they've done is routine. Recently they had stuff out for Burns' Night, and these displays appear and are refreshed very regularly. Quite how they get it done, I don't know: they always seem to be busy. I recommend everyone pays a visit to see their Chinese art and artifacts - before they swap it all for whatever comes next!
