“Crucible of Creativity”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

So much new stuff here. A previously derelict hulk has become a beating heart of colourful craft and creativity. They now open until late on Thursdays, until 8pm. People still gather for their free “Friday Crafty Mornings” to sit and knit / paint / crochet / do Manga art together. The history corner and War dead tribute painting are gone. Every month the gallery section welcomes some new artist’s work. They do art classes, and all sorts of craft classes – see the details on posters in the main doorway.

For the summer festival on August 8th they’ll have storyteller Billy Teare in performing. The festival’s walking tour of the town is going to see inside the grand historic building. They make all sorts of new souvenir things you mustn’t miss – their Whitehead calendar sold out, another calendar, cards and key rings are next. This is the only place where I see all the books on sale about local folklore and history.

The renovation and reopening work continues apace. They built a new perimeter wall around their garden area. They built a new toilet for people taking classes. There was a very grand doorway all bricked up for years, before Sinead Brennan battered through it and put a spiffing door back in. Lighthouse Yarns is now living in the impressive room inside. People are welcome to visit, and sit at a craft table making stuff – outstanding! Do pay the place a visit, it’s absolutely buzzing.

“Good for gifts”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

We were there last to buy a gift, it is a very good place for that. They have paintings that change every month. They open up late on Thurdays in the evenings. They have very good calendars of Whitehead, and Christmas cards.

“Whitehead has come alive !”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

This place is great for our village as it has become a hub for both artists and all other people interested in all the lovely works of art on show. There is something for everybody`s taste and purse. It is also a place of great inspiration and very cheerful to visit for inspiration on any day, whether rain or shine. They have classes on any subject you can think of and they are open every day of the week except for Sunday; open late on Thursdays till 8 p.m.

There is also a very interesting history section with maps, postcards and books for anyone interested in the local area. They have an art gallery with changing exhibition every month where artists from a bigger area are represented.

“All sorts of everything”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

A very interesting place, they have pictures by many local artists on display. There are also all sorts of crafts, photo's and materials for anyone artistic. They do classes in embroidery, ceramics, painting, and more, plus children's art classes. They have a history section where you can read books about the area, see the painting of the town's war dead, or see old maps when Whitehead was much smaller and the streets had different names. Because the building was a bank before there are odd features like bars on the windows and even giant metal safe doors in a corridor. A very colourful attraction right in the middle of the town.
