“Noisy Industrial Area”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Stayed for 2 night booked and paid for three. As previously stated our hosts were very pleasant but this does not make up for the isolation of the property.
We arrived after 7pm after a long drive and wanted to go to a nearby restaurant the closest was 15mins drive staggering in the dark and opening the farm gate, If you are a family and never want to go out to eat this may be the place for you not us.
We booked a Homestead Suite which in truth is a very average noisy room with a dingy dark library adjacent with entry to the very nice breakfast room this was the only highlight , breakfast was very good,
Hobart is a great holiday but for a couple this is not value for money considering it is 10km from CBD and is in an Industrial zone, we paid $200 a night but it was Easter . Preferred our next accommodation hands down,

My husband and I stayed in the Homestead Suite in March 2014 for my husband's 60th for five nights. The Homestead Suite was a lovely room. Penelope and David were gracious hosts. I would highly recommend the Cleburne.

No clock radio. No iron/ironing board...as advertised on site. One change of towels over 5 day stay, other times wet towels had to be placed on very inefficient electric towel rail resulting in damp towels from the night before. Toiletries not replaced as consumed. Ran out of instant coffee, had to ask for more..Dirty coffee mugs/wine glasses from night before not cleaned, a sign the room is not inspected daily.
TV screen is a tiny 14" and loses the digital signal, relies on internal rabbit ears aerial, cant see screen if your in bed as tv is mounted on a very low window sill, batteries flat in remote."Free movies" are on outdated 5 or 6 DVD disks.
Bed lamps are placed on unstable 3 leg glass table ..easily knocked over looking for the on/off in line power cord switch to bed side lamp. Bathroom not cleaned daily. No toilet roll holder...Soap holder in shower broken.
Be sure to pack a flashlight as car park and dirt track path to main entry of Homestead apartment was unlit after dusk, almost tripped and fell into bush.
Hosts don't always turn on porch light to entry, so remember to do that before leaving if your returning after dusk, so you wont have to fumble with the broken entry door lock and dodge the bird poo on porch or trip on the steps.
Heavy cattle grid farm gate to lift up to open/close on arriving/leaving with car, which scraps along gravel ground caused by poor maintenance of hinges.
Kids will have great fun counting the mounds of duck poo dotted around the place and make sure you check the kids shoes before getting in the car for animal poop.
Poo was on the porch on arrival and more was there on our departure ...no attempt to clean by hosts.
Poo is all over the property as are the feral rabbits now infected with myxomatosis or equivalent virus tho that maybe not be an issue if you keep away from the bunnies.
Don't feed the birds as they will repay you by leaving their poo on your door step. Young city kids would have a great time feeding the 20+ ducks 3 lyrebirds which roam the property at will.
Alpacas are in a separate field and appear to be friendly if your around at feeding time.

Breakfast was enjoyable in charming dining room with open log fire. DIY toast, cereals, compote of warm stewed fruit, watery drip filter coffee, tea available on request, selection cold cut meats, cheese, selection of jams honey.
Hosts were very friendly and helpful.
Do your internet business away from Homestead as mobile connection hover on 1/2 bars on Ipad retina. Most times no 3G connection. No WiFi available. Cant blame the hosts for that as its just one of those things in terms of coverage by the telecommunications companies.
Property is ring roaded by very noisy traffic with semi trailers compression braking, noticeable in evenings and busy traffic the rest of the time, which took away the ambiance of sitting on the porch with a glass of refreshment.
Were offered the Cottage on arrival for same tariff but declined, big mistake to decline.
Offered by hosts to use their sitting room which has a range of either mostly outdated 10+ year old monthly magazines or eclectic range of older paper backs/hard covered books mostly on art/literature. Loved the Captain Cadillac painting hung in the room.

At $200 per night the Homestead Apartment is not the best value for money.

Stayed on for a further 2 nights (when we could have stayed in big hotel for $119.00 per night in central Hobart with free upgrades to better room) and as we made up our own bed daily, no concession was offered to us nor none asked for.
Would not revisit but perhaps might recommend to friends on explaining the deficiencies as mentioned.

Room Tip: Dont book the Homestead Room due to Highway noise and the track to room from car park is not illumin...

Hi, Jimbo. Thanks for your detailed and serious review. We are glad that, despite cheaper rooms being available elsewhere, you enjoyed staying with us enough to return. We appreciate everything you say and have already implemented many points. Others are underway. We have a number of responses which we hope address all your concerns:

1. Rabbits and myxomatosis. Rabbits abound in Tasmania and especially on the Derwent’s eastern shore. Glenn Graves, the Government authority on Invasive Species assures us that myxomatosis is species specific. There is absolutely no danger to human adults or children, dogs, cats or any other species.
2. The Gate. Our design for the new gate has been with the manufacturers for some time and will be installed soon. It will look terrific and work efficiently.
3. Geese and poo. The local farm school has taken eighteen of the twenty two geese, leaving us with two older, non-breeding couples. Poo has been removed and will not return.
4. The dark path. We are preparing a brighter light for the path.
5. Magazines. As you say there are large collections of magazines in the Reading Room, but we are always current with three magazines - The Monthly, English Home and Country Style. We have now positioned these current issues more obviously.
6. Captain Cadillac. We’re delighted that you enjoyed this painting. It’s a bit outrageous, but a lot of fun!
7. Room servicing. We understood when we asked about servicing your room that you did not want us to do it. Our apologies. Our understanding re: provision of iron and ironing board was that guests would simply ask. Apologies.
8. Noise. We have installed wooden shutters at the Homestead window to deaden noise. We think they work well.

Once again, many thanks for your review. We hope, now that we have made the changes you suggest, that the experience for guests in our Homestead suite will be much improved.

Stay well.

David/Penelope.

Cleburne Homestead is a jewel of a place. It is ringed by the bridge interchange but feels like it is miles from civilization. A flock of geese greeted us on arrival, and Mr. Blue, a male peacock losing this years display of tail feathers became our best mate after we fed him leftover bread on a couple of occasions outside our room. Not to mention his spouse and only off spring...and the 7 Alpacas, lone rooster, and sole turkey.... The place was lovely, the rooms spacious and well appointed, and breakfast was quite generous - three different breads to toast, 4 different cereals, yoghurt, a platter with cheese and meat, coffee and tea... Yes, there is some traffic noise, but we hardly noticed it - it was not an issue at all. The location is great for visiting MONA, and we found the selection of places to eat in North Hobart to meet all our needs - in fact, some of our best meals were found there, at half the price of those in and about Salamanca and downtown Hobart proper. We were originally booked for just a few nights, but luckily were able to return after spending some time in Launceston. We got a look at all the rooms and would have been happy in any of them, but spent our time in the Homestead, and highly recommend it. The rooms in the old barn are really quite nice, and if you had kids, the self contained cottage would be ideal.... The hosts, Penelope and David are really lovely people and very helpful. Overall, a great experience, and if you are tired of cookie cutter hotels, this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Homestead room , in the main house, but asked to see the other rooms, when vacant a...

We came across Cleburne Homestead quite by chance. After going through tonnes of colorless hotel rooms in Hobart offering much of the same, we stumbled upon Cleburne's website and decided on it almost instantly.

The owners had done a fantastic job of marrying creature comforts and yet retaining the original rustic character of the place. After staying in another historical establishment which was not that updated, I really appreciate the modern bathrooms and contemporary decor that Penelope and David put into the place. We were in the Homestead suite and I absolutely loved the preserved floorboards. The adjoining study was fascinating too, with a few pieces of (thought)-provoking artwork. Too bad we didn't have the time to sit back and enjoy it as we only stayed for a day.

Coming back late in the evening, we saw bouncy rabbits darting away from our headlights. There was also resident peacocks, geese and a most playful puppy seeking attention. The location was slightly off the beaten track, charming and secluded, yet within 15mins of Hobart. Breakfast was a communal affair in the dining room, with generous and delicious spread and a gracious host.

Perhaps the only drawback is the lack of a Wifi network. But then again, staying on such a quaint and charming estate, perhaps we should be less occupied with the outside world...at least for a while.

Two nights here, wish we had stayed more. Room was fantastic and a great location to access Hobart and the areas to the North. Very warm welcome and great breakfasts. Deceptively quiet given the major roads nearby, had no issues with noise at all (except the rare noise from Frank the resident male peacock.)

This would have to be the most amazing place we have ever stayed!! Wonderful hosts, and the most charming setting, made for an extremely enjoyable and relaxing 3 days break.
The location was handy to everything, yet peaceful and removed from the hustle and bustle of the city.
We stayed in the Bakehouse Suite. Stunning décor, and everything you could possibly need to feel at home. The animals cruising
around were delightful. Loved every second.

Room Tip: They are all gorgeous!!
