This is a gem of a B&B if you want peace, friendly service and good food. We arrived late after a day's driving in torrential rain, but they asked for our choice of food on the phone and it was all ready when we arrived. Very clean, shop and teashop on site, amazingly quiet location (mainly sheep and hills outside!) despite being well placed for the M6. Simply furnished with plenty of comfy seats. Have been twice for an overnight stay, but I'm tempted to spend longer another time with some good books and a guide to the Lakes.....

The owners are friendly and accomodating. This old youth hostel has been nicely modernised and I stayed there during a weekend mountainbiking and hiking in the Lakes. I liked the quiet accomodation, drying rooms, bike cleaning facilities and fantastic food (it does include a tea room).

I would prefer a 4* hotel with bike wash - but I wouldn't want to pay for it!

Room Tip: The larger rooms are great for families.

In the lakes on a mountainbiking trip with a few mates and what a smashing place to stay! Steve and Jo were very friendly and made us feel right at home straight away. Warm and comfortable rooms to relax downstairs - Spacious clean bedroom with en-suite shower etc and fresh towels. Homemade food was a real highlight with Steve perfectly happy to tweak mine to suit dietary needs (without being any less hearty and delicious as my friend's meals!) Cakes and desserts all home made and ... sorry I've started salivating just remembering that hot choccy pudding with icecream!

Really topped off a great trip - Thanks guys!

I have been visiting the Old School for many years as I organise group walking weekends and whenever we stay there it is always a great experience. This is budget accommodation and as such all of my friends think it is superb value as the extras you get are more often associated with more expensive B&B's. There is tea/coffee available, all bed linen and towels and the bathrooms are all well equipped with everything you need. The lounge is always warm and breakfast is superb. Over the years Steve and Jo have gradually done up all the facilities from what used to be a basic bunk house to what is now a very comfortable budget accommodation. In addition the friendliness and helpfulness of Steve and Jo are exceptional. We often have people bringing dogs and they are always welcome and nothing is ever too much trouble. We are even allowed free rein in the kitchen on a Saturday night to do our own meal! This is ideally located just off the M6 for access to all parts of the Lakes and it is only a short walk to the local pub. I cannot recommend the place highly enough as long as you go with the expectation that this is budget accommodation and not 3* hotel. Personally I would stay here over many more expensive places I have been to! The last highlight to report is the fantastic homemade scones which we always do our best to clean them out of!

Room Tip: Room 8 is an excellent family room - large with double and bunk bed accommodation.

the owners could not be more welcoming and helpful. They are very helpful and very family friendly (they put up their own travel cot for us and lent us a towel 2 dry slide in kids playground opposite!). Unfortunately this could not make up for pretty basic food at medium range price (8.95 for what appeared and tasted like a ready meal lasagne served onto a plate with fresh veggies). My partner meal was slightly better. We also had cake and tea on arrival; The tea was fantastic leaf tea and my cake was gorgeous, but my partners was unfortunately stale (lack of business I guess, but should not have been served). The bedroom was large but very basic...no tele, tea tray was in hallway outside? and beds were really poor quality. We thought the breakfast was pretty good and helped set us up for our long drive, but the lack of sleep (through bed and noisy neighbours - walls are very thin!) and quality of evening meal did spoil our stay. The huge shared bathroom we used was completely new with spa bath...just need to repeat this success in bedrooms and lounge area. would probably not stay again due to beds...sorry guys

Room Tip: Eat out, Try the shared bathroom rather than ensuite. We had family triple room (double n 2 singles...

We decided to break a trip to Aberdeen from Oxford about halfway. We tried to get a room in one of the cheaper chain hotels, but got blown up in the minefield of their website, so a short search on TripAdvisor brought up The Old School.
We contacted Steve Dunkinson & agreed to send a deposit for our £60 overnight stay. Arriving in the evening, we were shown to our double-bedded room. It was clean (except the extractor fan grille, which needed hoovering) & had obviously been recently redecorated, as there was nothing apart from the furniture present! As evening meals weren't available, we went to the nearby local pub, where the food was OK (mine) or not so OK (Frances').
Our bed was quite comfortable enough, & we slept well. Up early for breakfast, we were the only guests staying that night. Breakfast was good, with home-made jam & a good pot of real leafy tea!
On our return from Aberdeenshire, we called in at The Old School for a cup of tea & a bite to eat. Steve was mortified when we (jokingly) said that we'd like a refund, as the literature said there was tea/coffee in all rooms, & ours didn't have any! There had obviously been a communications glitch in the management..
The Old School lies just off the M6 at J38, so a short diversion off the motorway will take you to a good stop, even if its only for afternoon tea. It felt homely, & the Dunkinsons are the least pretentious people you could wish to meet. We took a peek into some of the other rooms, & they were fully equipped, so anyone from a single traveller to a large family can be accommodated. I keep banging on about the tea, - but it really was that good. We'll probably call again if we're on that part of the M6.

Room Tip: Not sure what the 'best' room might be - just ask when you book.
