Attentive...even to the toddlers!!

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 8 Aug 2018
We couldn't decide whether to take in the vast landscape from the rich leather cushioned seats on the veranda of our tent, or the chairs inside the tent, or the hammock that was hanging invitingly right outside our tent. Our family tent was large, elaborately appointed and beautifully furnished. Yet, despite the canvas, it had a homely feel to it, with small details such as a hand-written welcome card at turn-down and hot water bottles creating such a personalized feel.
Our two year old could not get enough of Andrew, the lodge manager! They walked around the lodge holding hands like old friends, exchanged countless stories that ended as soon as they began (considering the attention span of a toddler) and spent the evening sprawled out on the floor of the tented restaurant leafing through pictures of wildlife. While my husband and i enjoyed sun-downers by the fireplace, all we could hear was Andrew animatedly asking, "and which animal is this...?", then our son would excitedly say, "it's a gi-waa-ff!!" On and on they went.
It would have been nice to have more options for breakfast, but the three course lunch and dinners made up for what was missing on the breakfast table. I had requested diabetic friendly meals, and was delighted to be served almond breads and other low carb options.
If you are keen on the game, June is not the best time to visit; all the rain means food is plentiful and the animals do not wander far to look for it. You will be seeing very few of them.
Whether you're travelling as a couple, as a family, for some solo R&R, or a birthday celebration like we did, you will be right at home at Kicheche. Andrew & team, thank you very much!

Room Tip: The family tent is incredibly large- it's practically two bedrooms.

This was our first African safari experience as a family and it did not disappoint. The conservancy is wonderful - we had many amazing black and white rhino sightings. It was rare to see another jeep, which made the experience so special. The landscape is spectacular - with Mount Kenya as a backdrop, sunsets and sunrises were breathtaking. Our guide Peter was fantastic - a very good 'spotter' and also incredibly knowledgeable and great fun. A highlight (among many) was seeing the conservancy's only wild dog hunt and eat its prey. The camp is just beautiful. The tents were very comfortable, spacious and clean and furnished with beautiful furniture, rugs and cushions. There was a gorgeous view of the watering hole from our tent, and one day we watched an elephant drink and walk across to our side. The camp hosts Louise and Andrew were delightful, great company and very interesting to talk to. A big thank you to them and all the staff who were so friendly and helpful. The quality of service, experience, and food here is outstanding. We combined a stay at this camp with one at the Kicheche Bush camp - between the two we saw every species of wildlife you could think of. It's an excellent combination. Highly recommend!

Room tip: All tents have beautiful views and are well spaced apart for privacy.

When visiting Kenya be sure to include a stay at Kicheche Tented Camp in Ol Pejeta National Park. I think you’ll find it to be the best decision you will make.
I couldn’t find fault if I tried. From the setting, to the staff, to the amazing food it was one pleasant surprise after another.
The peace and seclusion is exactly what you hope for in your safari experience but the dining so far exceeded anything I could have expected. I even asked for recipes.
The park was amazing and my guide for the game drive was knowledgeable and personable and made every effort to find the elusive. He did not disappoint!
It was, without a doubt, one of the top camp stays in multiple Safaris. I’m looking forward to returning.

This was our second Kicheche camp, having started at Valley Camp. The game was slightly harder to see due to the different terrain but seeing the wild dog, rhinos and a lion devouring a zebra really finished off our safari. The camp was beautifully kept, the food excellent and the staff, camp hosts and guides amazing. Speaking with local operators in Nairobi, the Kicheche guides are known for being exceptional and they certainly were. They know every bird by sight and sound and every animal behaviour you could possibly need to know. Equally, they are friendly and fun which is important as you spend so much time with them. This was our first safari and it certainly won't be our last and that is due to the experience we have had with Kicheche. Thank you so much to everyone at both camps.

My husband Joel K just posted a review of our stay at Kicheche Laikipia. I can’t stress enough that our guide Peter was excellent - he has an eagle eye for spotting a lone rhino on the horizon along with other wonderful creatures. In addition to his great knowledge of the wildlife, Peter is a gentle and patient host - our games drives were from 6am-12pm and then again from 4-7pm.
He also built a rapport with our boys who had their first close encounters with predators and prey in the wild.

Our hats off to the camp managers Louise and Andrew and their team behind the scenes. Delicious baked goods appear magically from a simple coal oven.

We thoroughly enjoyed watching the animals along the watering hole just outside the camp boundaries - a treat for the eyes afternoon.

We learned a lot about Kenyan culture and politics and conservation approach over lunch and dinner with Andrew and the guests from Nairobi.

Did we mention that Andrew and team conjured up a delicious lunch after we had to return from the airstrip as our flight to Mara was delayed by 5 hours?

One more thing- a visit with the Northern White Rhino project rangers is a must as is the memorial to all the Rhinos lost.

This is a family holiday that none of us will forget.

Our family of two adults and two teenage sons (ages 13 and 15) visited Kenya over Easter break spending time at Kicheche Laikipia Camp for 3 nights and Kicheche Bush Camp for 4 nights. Both camps are maintained to a very high standard and offer outstanding customer service and an unrivaled game viewing experience.

My wife and I had been on safari many years ago and had longed to bring our sons. Kicheche did not disappoint. The quality of the guides, the exceptional food, and incredibly friendly nature of everyone at the camp was all we could have asked for.

We also were able to experience the bittersweet experience of the Rhino conservancy and the care and protection afforded to the two remaining Northern White Rhinoceros. This added special experience was wonderful for us all and particularly for our boys to experience and learn about wildlife conservation.

We could not recommend Kicheche Laikipia more to anyone looking for a truly special and personalized safari experience.
