“A perfect place to stay”
Reviewed 17 May 2009

I thought this was a really lovely hotel. Rooms were comfortable and spotless. I loved the view from the window. The dinners were absolutely excellent. Wonderful food, beautifully presented. Hosts Michael and Cathy made everything about the stay pleasant. I found the hotel's situation perfect, with a choice of lake, mountain or valley walking on the doorstep. The wildlife visiting the feeders in the front garden reached disneyesque proportions at times - red squirrel, hare, many birds one evening (no bluebirds though). Recommended. Just don't all book it out when I want to go next time.

The hotel enjoys a fine location, framed by lakeland fells and is surrounded by fields full of lambs during our stay, with red squirrels woodpeckers and many other birds visiting the garden. Catbells is only ten minutes walk away , as is the edge of Derwentwater, with lovely lakeside trails and a regular boat service to Keswick and other stops around the lake.
New owners Mike and Cath were exceptional hosts, easily attended to my wifes food fads and even repaired a pair of broken sunglasses left in the bedroom. Their whole ethos is aimed at a top quality service and we were so pleased to have chosen this hotel, which we consider is under rated on the star system, particularly the food. Our party of 6 reckoned the dinners were as good as anything we had experienced in any hotel and chef Clive Impey is an undiscovered and modest star in that respect. The fact that dinner was a set 4 courses was absolutely no problem with willing hosts happy to consider individual tastes where appropriate.
Our room on the top floor was not huge but was well set up with a comfortable bed and refitted en suite and the two sitting rooms were a pleasant place for pre dinner drinks and coffee.
Great weather too, so fabulous walking, all nearby. We even got to meet the Borrowdale race champion Billy ( still a record holder from 1979 ) who was rebuilding the entrance gates in Westmoreland slate.
If you want a quiet spot in a beautiful location plus outstanding food and great walking, look no further......

We booked this hotel blind over the web, so you never quite know what you're actually going to find. However, once over the threshold, all qualms are immediately erased. We were greeted by a warm handshake and a real welcome from what turned out to be a really nice couple. The new owners have been in since October 08 and are as keen as mustard. The place is scrupulously clean, everywhere is extremely comfortable and the food is excellent, despite the single menu approach. Nothing is too much trouble. We really can't recommend Swinside Lodge highly enough and I would expect them to win the "Small Hotel of the Year Award" again this year. There is a review below that is something less than positive - I suspect they must have this place confused with somewhere else; I certainly recognise nothing in their comments. Go, you will not be disappointed.

This is a delightful, small hotel, in attractive grounds and set in the stunning surroundings of the Newlands Valley, near Keswick. Rooms are of varying size we understand. Ours (Oak room) was probably one of the smaller rooms, but was still a decent size, tastefully decorated and had a modern en-suite bathroom although the quality of the drawers was not top-notch.
Along with all other ‘posters’ on TA, we can only concur about the food – it’s fantastic. The evening meal is a set menu, but changes daily. It’s imaginative, using local ingredients where possible, cooked with skill and care, beautifully presented and it tastes divine. One evening we had a vegetarian main course and it was probably the best veggie main course we have ever had. Breakfasts are of equal top quality too.
The hosts, Irene and Eric Fell, are both charming and really do all they can to enhance your stay.
There is lots of walking to be had direct from the hotel – so you can leave your car in the car park if you want. We were lucky with the weather on our stay, and walked every day. However, if the weather was bad, some guests might want to stay in the hotel and catch up on something on TV perhaps – and this would be our only (very minor) quibble. The television reception was very poor – we appreciate that TV reception in the Lakes can be dire, but hopefully if the hotel move over to Virgin / Sky, then this minor point might well be addressed (and to be absolutely fair, the hotel has a good range of DVD’s supplied free of charge).
Would I recommend Swinside Lodge? Absolutely! – we can’t wait to return.

Overview: This is a small hotel with exceptional personal service from the owners. Highlights are the setting - at the foot of Cat Bells in the Newlands Valley - and the excellent dinners and breakfasts.

Location: Excellent location, not far from Keswick but in a rural situation amid some of the Lakes' most beautiful countryside. Close to many walking locations, including the popular Cat Bells, but also handy for flatter walking in the Newlands valley.

Hosts: Eric and Irene Fell are excellent, thoughtful hosts who treat their guests with care.

Food: Perhaps the best aspect of this hotel is the food. Dinners are a four-course affair in a small, tastefully decorated dinning room with a set menu of interesting and well-prepared food. Excellent wine list. The owners have clearly invested a lot of time and thought into their dinner and breakfast offerings, hiring an excellent chef.

Rooms: Well-decorated with good facilities (TV, comfortable bathroom, comfortable beds). Our room was one of the smaller ones - it wasn't spacious but it was big enough.

We recently returned from a trip to England. We spent the majority of our stay at this hotel in Keswick, having chosen it from comments I read on TripAdvisor. It really was a wonderful place. It is right next to the beginning point for the Cat Bells hike, and it is a five-ten minute walk down to Lake Derwentwater where you can catch a launch into the town of Keswick. We were extremely lucky in having three full days of sunny weather! And at that time of year, we could hear lambs baaing from our window.

We had decided to do the bed, breakfast and dinner deal. The hotel has its own chef. We had dinner there four nights and each night was incredible. The wines were like nothing we'd had before, but then again we usually buy $10 wines here in the States. Everything was absolutely delicious, especially the soups. Each night at 7 p.m. you could go down into the sitting rooms and Eric and Irene would serve drinks with little appetizers. At 7:30 dinner was served in the dining room. The hosts really helped create a friendly atmosphere, introducing the guests to each other. We had been unsure of whether we wanted a hotel where one needed to be social (that's what we were getting away from), but really everyone was so nice and we enjoyed getting to know the other guests. After dinner one could go into the sitting rooms again for coffee and petit fours. We did a couple of nights, but the other two nights went for a night walk down to the lake and sat on a bench overlooking Derwentwater.

For breakfast you could choose a huge Cumbrian breakfast, very delicous, or poached eggs and ham, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon... I would definitely recommend the porridge - it was the creamiest porridge I've ever had.

Our room was a little small but we had expected that. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the bathroom very nice with the towel warmer! (Unique to Americans!) The tea and coffee maker was nice to start our day with. There was a small TV and DVDs downstairs to borrow, which we did one night. I loved the view from our window, looking out to the back garden and up into the fells. We often sat in our room (after a long day out) with the window wide open just enjoying the peace of the day. There were little cookies in a tin, a hair dryer in the drawer, and a special place for dirty boots in the closet.

My husband and I were celebrating our 15th anniversary, and one night at dinner, Eric came in with a little fruitcake topped with a champagne bottle candle lit. It was a special gesture that wasn't expected but much appreciated.

We also appreciated the ideas the hosts gave us of special things to see or do while we were there. The ones we were able to do we enjoyed very much, especially a drive over Honister Pass. One day we went into Keswick on the launch for Market Day.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. The setting is just perfect with the fells rising up behind the hotel and pastures all around. The hosts are friendly people, the hotel itself very comfortable and the meals delicious. We hope to go back again someday!

My wife and I have recently returned from a 2 night break at Swinside Lodge, which I booked on the back of the owners (Eric & Irene) winning the Cumbria Tourism "Small Hotel of the Year 2007" award.

The location is amazing- 5 minutes walk to Derwent Water and 5 minutes the other way and you're at the foot of Cat Bells. The beautifyul market town of Keswick itself is a c.3 mile walk away. Don't take the car, the views are amazing on foot, especially if you walk even part way up Cat Bells (see my photo of the view from above).

The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with crisp Egyptian Cotton sheets and Molton brown toiletries. Ours was a "super king" room and the in-room facilities (DVD player, DVDs to borrow, tea/coffee etc) were spot on.

Now for the service. I mentioned the award. Once you check in, you realise that the hotel has won awards every year for the past 4 years, as they're proudly displayed on their walls. The attention to detail and service shown by Eric and Irene show why. Advice on local walks was freely given and Eric was even kind enough to lend us his OS map to navigate our way around Derwent Water. Upon our return, our muddy wet boots were whisked away for drying.

Pre-dinner drinks and canapes are served in the drawing room half an hour before dinner is served. A four course dinner awaits at 7.30pm of such quality that would easily command £60-£70 per head in a restaurant in the south. The wine recommendations were excellent on both evenings and once experienced you'll be hatching plots to kidnap both the chef and Eric's local wine merchant. Or is that just me...

My wife is vegetarian and I have to say the options the chef devised for her were excellent. Roasted peppers with cous cous for dinner, rather than the bland veggie options you normally find.

There's so much more I could say. The little touches such as the miniature birthday cake given to my wife all combine to make the stay truly memorable.

We'd love to go back soon- thanks Eric and Irene.
