We just returned from Dolphin Bay Resort with our two kids - ages 2 and 4. As others have said, this place is very kid-friendly. The layout of the pools, playground, and restaurant works very well, especially for kids (like mine) who have a hard time sitting in a restaurant; it is nice that they can swim or play on the playground while you are waiting for food. The food was ok, but definitely not great... I expected it to be better since I understand that it is owned by the same people who own Tartine Cafe in Bangkok, which has very good food. It is about a half hour drive away (and the staff were not very helpful in providing directions) but if you are looking for excellent food, check out the Roadhouse. The room was fine, not fancy, but clean and nicer than I expected from the pictures. Rooms right around the pool could be loud, if you are bothered by noise. We stayed in the 2 bedroom apartment, which was very comfortable, but the walls are quite thin and we were disturbed by fireworks the first night and crying babies the second. Also, the aircon in our room was on some sort of timer and kept turning itself off, which woke us up. They finally were able to fix this, but it took a while. My biggest complaint is the bugs... There were lots of flies and mosquitoes everywhere and although I took a lot of precautions, we all got mosquito bites. I got a great foot massage, but was swatting bugs away the whole time! It would probably help if they put some fans around. The view is beautiful, but as others have mentioned the beach itself is really not very nice at all. We didn't swim in the ocean, but did take a boat out to monkey island, which was a lot of fun. The hotel staff were very helpful in arranging that with a local fisherman. Last thing, they are quite strict about the amount of drinking water they will provide so it would be a good idea to pick up a big jug or two at a market before you check in.

Dear Debra, thank you for visiting Dolphin Bay. I appreciate that you took the time to review our property. We just took over few months ago and didn't change the menu yet but will do it now soon!
Regarding the mosquitos we will definitely follow your advise and add more fan, specially on the patio of the 2 and 3 bedrooms. For the water supplies and other item, we are opening our own mini mart next month and also a new spa downstair. Again thank you very much for your comments.
We really hope to welcome you again.

We are living in quite a cold place, so when we were arranging our vacation, we decided that it would be not shorter than 4 weeks in order to let our children (3 years and 11 months old) get used to the climate and not get sick immediately after coming back home. Besides, we didn’t plan lots of traveling or excursions because again of the children. We just wanted to have a relaxing “lazy” holiday with minimum of movement not to get tired after the vacation. And we never felt disappointed of our decision, and 1 month holiday at Dolphin Bay Resort fully satisfied our aims in this meaning!
Well, starting with the room (we were staying in bungalow), I would say it is quite good, clean and comfortable, taking into consideration that you would stay in the open air almost all day long. Our room was just up to the road and it was a little bit noisy. Next time if we go again here, we would like to come with our grandparents, so we would take a three bedroom apartment.
We liked the pools greatly. There are 2 of them: one is deep, and the other one is divided into 2 – very shallow one (for very small kids) and a deeper one (for older kids). Our nearly 4 years old son started to swim without any help of us or any devises on the second day of our stay at DBR). First 2 weeks he was swimming in the pool almost all day long. I would mention a very good location of the pool, restaurant and our bungalows, so we could have a meal at the restaurant or just sit near our bungalow and see him swimming in the pool.
Restaurant. Before our trip I was very concerned regarding food for the kids, especially for the older one and even took some products for him with us from our country. Now I can say that there is no need to take anything, the DBR Restaurant has quite a wide kids menu. We also liked Thai food, especially noodle soups and curries. Breakfast was good, but we would recommend to serve some cheese. We could eat it in the omelet, but we would like to have it as a separate dish as ell. Staff was very friendly, their English was understandable.
Sea and the beach. Sea is not very good for swimming: shallow and not very clear. But we liked the beach greatly. It is fool of life: crabs running away from you feet, small shells with small crabs and so on… to be continued.

Room Tip: it's depend

We stayed for 5 nights and my kids loves it. Two pools, a stones throw for a quiet beach that hardly seems to get deep at all. Lots of shells and crabs. A young kids dream.
However, I would have to agree with the previous poster who mentioned that the new French owners are not very friendly but then I didn't want to hang out with them so not a major problem. The local staff were friendly and more than competent of running the place.
We ate out most nights as we can't bear spending too much time in the same place. Eating breakfast, lunch and dinner in one location suit some but not others. There are a few restaurants around where the food is cheaper and better quality.
Some of the things are, in my opinion overpriced.

We love Dolphin Bay Resort, and return over and over because it is just SO EASY to stay there with kids. Everyone who goes to Dolphin Bay has at least 1 child (though I think the average must be 3 or more!) There is a big green space for kids to safely run around and play on their newly updated playground, the baby pool is the perfect depth for 2+ yr olds to walk around on their own, my 5 and 7 year old can touch in the attached bigger pool, the water slide into this pool is a HUGE hit for all my kids (the 2.5 year old, included.) There's a deeper pool next to the other two that is nice for swimming laps. The easy thing about it all is that the restaurant is literally the deck of the kid pools. So you come in the morning, dump your stuff at a table, and park it all day if you want to. You can sit there drinking a beer if you so desire, and watch your kids from a meter away. The food isn't bad, they've got a nice kid selection of eats. They have a little playroom stocked especially with boy friendly toys-i couldn't get our son out of there with so many robots and cars and such. Foozball, pool table, a couple of computers, there's a spa with licensed therapists and even a kid's spa menu, the staff are all so helpful and friendly, the owners have a young son themselves so they know what people with kids want and need...the beach is a stone's throw across a little road. Not pristine white sand, but very fun for the kids to make sand castles for the hermit crabs, squish their toes in the sometimes muddy sand, look for sand dollars... if you get stir crazy, you can hire a longtail boat to take you around the area, go fishing, go on a marsh tour early in the morning to see birds and the sunrise, rent bicycles, motor scooters...there's a really great water park (Black Mountain Water Park) that is a little less than an hour away that is good even for the littlest ones.
The things you have to put up with are: mosquitoes, no phone in the room, definitely not a 5 star place, bugs/little lizards in your bathrooms, a bit smelly drains in the bathrooms, loud air conditioners. But these things we are willing to deal with because as I said at the beginning, it's such a kid friendly, easy place to go where the kids have a blast and you can actually relax too because the kids are safe, happy, and everyone else is in the same boat as you.

Room Tip: The bungalows look out onto the pool and garden, great to be able to let your kids get out and run a...

Just finishing a 2 weeks trip in Thailand. We 've visited Dolphin bay resort during our journey from BKK to Phuket. The resort is not in Hua-Hin but 40 kilometers south . It is a very calm bay ( different athmosphere from Phuket beaches ! ) and it was perfect after 3 days in Bangkok. The resort is very clean and the staff very good with kids. The restaurant is offering a great selection of dishes for kids and the prices are very reasonables. We rented bikes from the hotel and explored the area and discovered some little locals restaurants, tasty and relax. another day we tried the paddle board, the beach is very safe and it is perfect for beginners. We had 2 connected rooms but on the last day I asked the manager to show me the 2 bedrooms suit and I may booked it next year !??!!! great for family as you have a kitchenette, a living room and a large terrace/balcony : little bit more expensive but worthy.

The location is good but the management isn't friendly unless you speak French. If you are French they will greet you everyday if you aren't the y will literally ignore you. The deep pool was dirty for more than a week until someone wrote about it on tripadvisor. When I complained about it she ignored me.
While I was there other guests had the same feelings about the owners and their reviews are coming soon.

Owned and run by a French couple, this a a very family oriented resort with lot of focus on young kids. Lots of facilities for the juniors, garden with play areas that include slides, sandpits, swings, a room full of toys and a television with kids channels and programming. There are 2 large pools parallel and next too each other, one exclusively for kids with a water slide. Rooms are average, do not expect luxury here. However, very clean and well maintained with basic amenities and a well stocked mini bar with juices, sodas and beers. Wi-Fi is free only in the main lobby area next to the restaurant and there is no access to Wi-Fi in the rooms. There are a couple of computers in the lobby area connected to the internet for general use and free of cost.

There is just one restaurant serving all meals here. The breakfast spread is routine with egg station and choice of cereal, fruit and bread besides local fare of rice, sausages etc. The a-la-carte menu is quite diverse and the food is pretty decent ranging from continental to Thai cuisines. The live barbecue station that is setup for dinner is very good with fresh catch, specially the shrimp. Food is priced quite reasonably. The service is great, people do take care of your needs and specially the waiters are quite well trained. They do some decent cocktails as well, watch out for the daily specials - they are quite nice and very reasonably priced. They do a decent job of recommending local cuisine outside of the resort as well.

There's a lot of activity to be done, it's a great area for cycling and outdoors kind of activity. You can rent out bicycles from the resort at THB 50 for 4 hours, although I must admit the one I rented gave me a pain in the backside :) ... they aren't the most well maintained. But there are a few rental shops by the beach where you can rent out bicycles and scooters. The beach where this resort is located isn't exactly spectacular, however it is clean. You can probably only venture into the water during high tide. However if you explore the area you may stumble upon some virgin beaches. There are a few cave and rock formations in the area too which are worthwhile exploring - the one I climbed to was the Phraya Nakhon Cave and its absolutely stunning in its natural formations and beauty. Be warned, the climb is really steep and physically demanding and requires a certain degree of physical fitness.
