“Great place”

We stayed at the Varlet Farms for 5 days as we toured the area around Flanders Fields and Brugge. We had room 8 which was very comfortable and the walk in shower and modern bathroom was fantastic. Dirk and his daughter Barbara can not do enough for their guest...they are wonderful people and the stay ended much to soon.

Room Tip: our room was a new addition and it was very up to date

We returned to Varlet Farm a year after our first visit having fallen in love with the place and the area last year. The warm welcome (not to mention fantastic apple pie) Dirk and Barbara offer is not to be missed - along with their endless knowledge and enthusiasm. We opted for the same downstairs double room we had last visit so that we could enjoy the lounge area outside the room for a drink and relaxation when we returned in the evening after dinner.
There is plenty of choice for the buffet breakfast, cereals, eggs, toast, breads, cheese, ham, Dirk's wonderful homemade plum jum etc and you are encouraged to make a packed lunch to take with you on your travels.
Its also wonderful to mix with the fellow guests over breakfast, or over a beer (€1.50 from the fridge!) in the lounge area in the evenings. You get to hear their stories and why they are visting the area - a nice friendly mix of British, German, dutch and New Zealand guests during this visit.
They have endless leaflets, information and maps to help you get the most out of your visit.
Don't be put off reading that its 9km or whatever from Ypres - its an easy drive and this place is worth it. Where else can you sleep on the Passendale battlefield?

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here. Being country people we were ready to escape back to some space after time in London and this was the perfect place. The family are 'laid back' and friendly just like coutry people at home. They were happy for us to make ourselves feel at home, our daughter made friends with all the animals and with some other children who were staying. I really enjoyed the communal breakfast table, and that's not normally my thing. It was nice to meet and talk to the other guests because you all have at least one thing in common - your interest in WWI history. Really enjoyed the collection of battlefield detritus Dirk has collected in his shed - fascinating. Our room was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was second to none. Loved the sitting areas, the reading material. Can't fault it. Would love to go back one day.

We we fortunate to have found this B & B by luck due to a problem at our hotel in Ieper (Ypres). The location is a bit hard to find but once you know the way... easy. The accommodation, beds, facilities are excellent. Value is excellent. Great breakfast and make a little lunch while you are at it. Very knowledgeable about local 1st World War battlefields and history. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

This farm turned B&B is clean and accommodating. The fact that there's a place for guests to hang out means that you get to talk with other travelers, which is always a plus. If you're looking for something upscale, this isn't the place. It's very nice, but basic. The farm is right on the battlefield, and the owner has a little museum in his barn featuring things he's dug up over the years. I found this more moving than any "real" museum. The biggest drawback is that it's so hard to find.

What a treat it was to stay here. My plan was to shoot off to Brugge or Brussels for a day but it was just too beautiful. The weather was the bast and I hired a bike from Dirk and cycled easily to some of the WW1 cemeteries and museums - easy riding and past fields of corn, onions, Brussel sprouts and old stone farm buildings. Idyllic.
The farm offers such a reasonable deal and is the best for a quiet sleep. Meeting other travellers adds to the fun.
Thanks to Dirk and his family.

This is a fantastic B & B, the family that run it are very welcoming and speak great English. The rooms are very clean and comfortable with the provision of towels, shower gel and shampoo (great for motorcyclists). There is also a fridge for the purchase of beer, coke etc. and the ability to make a packed lunch from the plentiful breakfast table was a real bonus. Varlet Farm is ideally located for WW1 museums etc. We cannot recommend it enough. Hope to return soon.
