“Needs a refurb!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2014

We were there for a valentine celebration. There was limited room availability so we 'upgraded' to a suite. It was spacious with a four poster bed but was dated- especially the bathroom. There was nothing wrong- but it was not the standard of room we've previously had a Slaley. We stopped off for lunch on the way so after a few drinks we ordered room service. Cold sandwiches only after 10pm on dry bread- at £8.50 a time- dreadful.
The spa also needs an update- the steam room was out of use 'due to unforeseen circumstances' not that unforeseen- every review for weeks says it's out of order! The sauna door kept sticking- the pool was fine but that all- fine!
The breakfast offering was ok- had to queue, as we did on our last visit. There was fruit, but it wasn't fresh, toast was just this side of burned, full English was average.

I love slaley- the public areas are lovely - we've been loads of times- but I would need to be assured of improvement before I return :(

We had a two nights stay here, and overall it was a mixed experience. I would mark a great deal lower, if it was based on the restaurants alone but the staff and the hotel itself were BRILLIANT brilliant and because of that I have to mark up from what would be very POOR.

Staff are fantastic - Particularly Chara on reception, Patricia in the Claret Jug and the BRILLIANT concierge Hussain... and nothing is too much trouble and they all demonstrate GREAT customer services.. waiting staff less impressive but better training might help.

Our suite was tired and in need of renovation but charged at a very VERY reasonable upgrade rate - so no complaints there and we were offered another room but I liked the rustic charm of this particular suite. Gorgeous views from our four poster bed, separate living area and a great bathroom which was spacious and inviting with a massive jacuzzi bath. I slept like a baby !!

Bar areas, communal areas and restaurants decorated to a modern standard and are a great mixture of cosy, sociable and private... and all areas are welcoming/inviting. I am a photographer so I loved many of the external and internal areas for shooting.

However - we complained about nearly everything that we eat on both days. Too numerous to mention here (from quality / kitchen errors / waiting staff shortcomings / cleanliness etc ) -

Suffice to say that the restaurant manager and the waiting staff could do no more than they did to rectify issues and were very understanding and patient and in fact generous with us because we really did bring every little detail to their attention, from cleanliness, quality, presentation, heat of the food and the chefs aversion to seasoning to showing the waiter how an ice bucket works. I even had to draw attention to the thick film of dust across the whole of the restaurant banquets that nobody (including the management) had noticed...(see images)... There were so many issues raised that I can't write them all out here but I am happy with how they were handled. Staff here really WILL go the extra mile to resolve issues but thats not really the point. The issues should not BE there...

So bearing all this in mind I did take great exception to being charged London prices in the middle of Northumberland when even the bare basics were not up to scratch. Sure everything seemed at first glance to look the part but the food, service and cleanliness HAS to measure and I am afraid it just didn't measure up this time, the restaurants let this hotel down.

Having said all that though - Absolutely this place is VERY welcoming and it is a great hotel just a shame about the food but we will return because catering is a hard business and mistakes happen - I just feel that so much of what we encountered (problem wise) could have been preempted and ironed out before guests even noticed or caused a fuss.

Room Tip: Ask to compare new and old rooms (suites)

We needed a break from the rat race and chose Slayley Hall near Hexham in Northumberland.
The hotel looked lovely and the bar area and little rooms off the corridors are indeed fantastic. However the room 100 pounds for the night was small, tired and in need of an update !
However despite all that we were optimistic and the restaurant looked fine ! HOWEVER the food was dreadful. My partner had gnocchi for the main course and there was 10 pieces of gnocchi on a very large plate ! My meal was tasteless - with 2 crusty balls of bubble and squeak ! Not good enough for the prices charged . I think we'll look for a country pub tomorrow night !

Overall Mixed experience at Staley hall

Staff very pleasant and bar areas a good mixture of cosy and modern and all welcoming.

On check in I was surprised when receptionist was loudly discussing price of room, when I had booked treat weekend for my wife. (Price paid resulted in her disappointment in value for money!!) Quality hotels normally offer better discretion.

Bed rooms were fine, but more “corporate” than I was expecting.

Breakfast disappointed with the number of customers appearing to overwhelm staff, having been shown to an unmade up, chipped table, we then had to wait 30 minutes for toast and coffee an to order cooked breakfast, which was good quality when it arrived.

Overall for the price I would expect better.

We went here as part of a Wowcher spa experience, and although the room, dinner and breakfast were at reduced cost, the wine spa and lunch etc cost an arm and a leg. The hotel is nice enough, but not up to the standard of some other high class spa hotels.
I'd recommend you go on a reduced price voucher of some sort to help the value for money. The gym was a useful, if small, addition.

After being at an event here I can say that the location is superb. However the drinks are horrific. The beer/larger was warm and flat and being priced at £4.20 a pint you really couldn't justify wasting your money on it. The only other option you had was soft drinks which were through the roof as well. These were kept in a fridge, however they were all room temperature. The water that was served with the meal was warm and soft drinks were not cheap to buy. So it was either water or wine. The food was a minimal portion and the evening buffet was terrible. The fish was burnt the chicken was just bones, sandwiches were hard and to top it off the "hot" section was cold. So overall besides being a beautiful location and a clean hotel it was a shame about having your eyes ripped out at the astronomical prices for warm flat drinks as well as being hungry all day.

We had a very nice weekend at Slaley Hall from check in to the cheek out it was excellent. I can recomend the Dukes Resturant we had a meal there on the Saturday night and it superb. The 19th bar was also very good and we had lunch in the Claret Jug with veiws over the golf course.
We stayed in a standard room which was more than adequate for our needs, we vistited the spar which also well run. Over all a very pleasent and relaxing weekend.

Not 100, not 500 but 1000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest play home to this magnificent, elegant Edwardian mansion. That the interiors are almost as dramatic as the exterior says it all. This is very old world grandeur with a modern twist. Bask in the warmth of the reception you receive on arrival, dine at Hadrian's Brasserie, or at the Duke's Grill. Indulge with a Vichy water spa treatment or just flop in the fantastic indoor pool. The great outdoors doesn’t get much greater. After a bracing country walk in the wilds, or round on our championship golf course, retire to the Claret Jug and the 19th Bar for a stiff brandy. Surely you deserve it ? ... more   less
