Spent a golf weekend here. Golf side of the hotel well organized. Had dinner in claret jug restaurant took ages to get a drink ordered signature fish curry which was watery and lacking in spice. One of the ingredients was unpeeled prawns which needed fishing out.The sticky rice was not sticky. Very ordinary.
Went to cocktail bar, young staff no idea about wine which was eye wateringly expensive. On the plus side breakfast was good and rooms OK if a bit tired.

We spent a weekend at Slaley Hall whilst attending a conference.

Our room, 356 was in the original part of the building and was larger than usual but in need of some modernisation as it was looking a little worn around the edges. Especially the carpet which was threadbare in places.

The lighting was very poor, with one standard lamp and two bedside lamps which made it difficult to apply make up. There was a mirror with two lamps either side in the bathroom but the sink was so large it made it difficult to get close enough to the mirror to see properly. To make matters worse, one of the bedside lamps along with one in the bathroom weren't working.

I have to say that without exception, every staff member I encountered was engaging, efficient, knowledgeable and very friendly. For example, having told reception about the lights, there was a knock at the door around two minutes later and the bedside lamp bulb replaced. As a team, the staff here are among the best i’ve seen and are a credit to the hotel.

Another plus point is the air con which is really efficient and was appreciated on a humid night. Strange really given how outdated the room is.

The hotel is miles from anywhere and If you are on O2 then you won’t get a signal, EE seemed to work OK though. The Wi-Fi makes up for this as it’s really good in the room and the public areas and it’s FREE!!! Other hotels please take note!

The bar doesn't sell beer in pints. Yes you read that correctly. We are in England where we have been drinking our beer from pint glasses for years and years but you can’t do that here. They only sell it in 2/3 of a pint glasses. I was told this was a “management decision”. Beyond belief...

Finally, De Vere always make sure you leave with a bit of a sour taste in your mouth with this stupid £2.50 charge for paying with a credit card.

Room Tip: Ask for one which has been refurbished

big hotel complex, like getting lost in a maze!
nice large bedroom with a nice view of the surrounding estate
nice comfy bed, large bathroom, great shower
free good WIFI in the room.
however, hotel is in the middle of nowhere!
i was here for a conference, so not my choice of hotel
food was not great for vegetarians. something that needs to be addressed.
ok selection for breakfast, but for the price you would expect twice as much offering
for instance, no hash browns for breakfast

My husband and I visited slaley hall for the first time at the end of June. It was a last minute break away before our first child is born. We could not fault the whole experience in any way. From the moment we arrived the service was superb. The staff on the front desk to the cleaners and everyone in between could not do enough to ensure our comfort.
One night we ate at Hadrians Brasserie which was included in our package. The food was lovely, good value for the money.
On our other night we went to Duke's Grill. The food was out of this world (would highly recommend the rack of lamb to share). What made it especially good was the attentive service without being pushy. This restaurant is without doubt testament to the saying you get what you pay for.
Also wanted to say thank you to the spa team for finding me the perfect treatment for a lady that is 6 months pregnant.
The last thing to mention as it is not signposted and probably rarely gets any visitors is the exquisite Japanese gardens. Well worth the 5 minutes walk from bar 19.
Overall a fantastic experience well worth the money and we will definitely be back soon with our new arrival!

We stayed in a Villa in the grounds as we have done on many occasions but unfortunately they no longer meet up to the standard that you would expect in a luxury resort. Everything just looks very tried and dated, the attention to detail seems to have been lost. The bedroom curtains look like a star constellation with all the holes in the them, lights not working, HD TV and satellite system but connected up wrong so you don't get an HD picture, furniture missing and no recycling points. We ate in the hotel on one occasion and although it was nice again the attention to detail was lost with the menu promising one thing but what you get, although very nice, elements were missing. We really love this place but unless they start looking at the bigger picture and not concentrate everything on the wedding parties it will really spoil one of the best hotels in Northumberland

This hotel was a stopover for me on the way up to Scotland. Very much a corporate golf hotel BUT was dog friendly, all the staff where great and the grounds are fantastic. No answer on room service probably as the Hotel was very busy so we tried the restaurant and had fast efficient service and good food. If your a golfer this place is a must.

The room was clean and the check in and out smoothly dealt with. Our request for a room without anyone above as it disturbs the dogs was met and all in all it was a good experience.

So £170 for a night in a better than average room with 2 dogs and a great breakfast and a long walk in the lovely grounds was good vfm.

Thanks

Mach.

Business trip and golf day , The Championship Golf course is one of the best I have played .
Nice dinner considering it was for circa 100 people .
Good breakfast , nice comfortable rooms . Staff pleasant
Reasonable prices except for drinks but they have a captive audience

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Not 100, not 500 but 1000 acres of Northumberland moorland and forest play home to this magnificent, elegant Edwardian mansion. That the interiors are almost as dramatic as the exterior says it all. This is very old world grandeur with a modern twist. Bask in the warmth of the reception you receive on arrival, dine at Hadrian's Brasserie, or at the Duke's Grill. Indulge with a Vichy water spa treatment or just flop in the fantastic indoor pool. The great outdoors doesn’t get much greater. After a bracing country walk in the wilds, or round on our championship golf course, retire to the Claret Jug and the 19th Bar for a stiff brandy. Surely you deserve it ? ... more   less
