“Authentic cultural experience”
Reviewed 4 October 2013

It was through the efforts of Kamal (the Riad owner) that we had an authentic cultural experience in the tiny village of Bhalil. Kamal was a wonderful host. He was welcoming, engaged and attentive and nothing was too much trouble. The Riad was authentic, stylishly and traditionally furnished with all mod cons. Our room was spacious, very clean and restful. We ate breakfast on the Riad's roof terrace that overlooked the town and surrounding mountains and ate dinner with Kamal and the cook in the kitchen. The food was a treat.
We also paid to go on a I/2 day hike into the mountains with Kamal and met and ate lunch with a Berber family who were very generous and accommodating. This unique experience would not have been possible without Kamal who provided a unique bridge between western and Moroccan culture.
Kamal also introduced us to a number of local Bhalil residents: the baker Aziz, the tailor Wahid, sundry children and their mothers. This provided us with the opportunity to share and discuss observations and practical and philosophical matters with Kamal acting as translator. This really enriched our experience and gave us a better understanding of Bhalil and Moroccan culture in general - which was invaluable in our month long travels in Morocco.

We stopped in Bhalil after a few days traveling in the desert on the way to Fez. It was a lovely transition from the Morocco's more desolate parts (which was fantastic too) to village life and before busier Fez. Kamal's Dar is comfortable with sweet special touches (hot water bottle in bed for extra night time warmth!) and, I think he has the best cook in all of Morocco. We had the best tagine there of our whole trip. Kamal himself is a wonderful story teller and we got great insights into Morrocan culture, politics and village life. We really enjoyed meadering around the village with him - Bhalil has an interesting history and we got a little glimpse of it with Kamal's guidance. If what you seek is interesting narrative (fluently in English or French) then Dar Kamal is a good choice. We'd totally go again.

This is a great little villa with warm friendly hosts and people around, providing a real escape by bringing you close in-touch with nature, culture, new experiences - all the reason you may travel for.
Kamal and Beatrix a unique French-Maroccan couple can authentically show and translate us the values, thinking, life cycles in their natural contexts which makes us understand things and people. I had a huge variety of programs, superb service, great conversations and great solo observatory activity as well - whichever I have asked for my wishes were figured before I knew what would be good for me.. The ecstatic of the rooms, house, village, culture and especially the nature is phenomenal and the kindness and entertainingly wittiness of people makes this experience a fantastic get-away! Above this all, my stay gave me peace and trust in general - however subjective my timing, purpose and style of travel may be...

This is a great little hide away, Kamal picked us up from Fez and took us on an amazing adventure through a Morocco we had not yet seen. His house is beautifully nestled in the hills of Bhalil. We toured the country side , through olive orchards, and olive oil plants, we saw the ancient cedar forest with wild monkeys, small villages where we got custom wool blankets made for us as we watched, and through all of it Kamal explained everything with amazing enthusiasm. This was one over our favorite place in all of Morocco, Thank you for making us feel so welcome

Kamal is a hands-on energetic owner and host. He made sure that our stay was comfortable and that we had a personally fulfilling experience during our stay at Dar Kamal Chaoui. The guest house is tastefully decorated and very comfortable. Every decorating decision has a story, just ask. The meals (prepared by Naima) were delish! The small village location of Dar Kamal Chaoui gave us a chance to have a personal experience with the surrounding cave dwellers and villagers and a chance to visit the town of Sefrou. After three days at Dar Kamal Chaoui I felt refreshed, felt connected to the land and the people and felt as if I had made a true friend. If you are looking for an escape from the big city feel of Fes, seek refuge at Dar Kamal Chaoui.

At this romantic retreat in an ancient Berber village, hear the Call to Prayer while you gaze down upon the sprawling expanse of Fez. Our stay in Bhalil, a half-hour from Fez, was dappled with friendly inhabitants, cave houses, children playing, fabulous meals, cozy nights, great conversations, and excellent day tripping. Our host, Kamal Chaoui, his family and their attentive staff, shared this tastefully appointed, comfortable home of 4 guest suites. From our terrace room with twin beds and a little, efficient wood stove, we could see all of Bhalil and watch the daily actions of the village. With unseasonably chilly evenings, we were thrilled to find a fire already warming our room and hot water bottles under the bed covers--heaven! Each meal was an event--both gourmet (house-made jams and preserves--French desserts!) and traditional recipes. We enjoyed meals with other guests, and a few on our own--all fresh, abundant, and delicious. Many antique and handmade items grace the rooms--I purchased a hand woven Berber "tool bag" made by a local man after he had lost his eyesight; it will always remind me of the richness of the Berber culture. Kamal was available for one day of our visit, and we engaged him for a full-day tour. First we visited...the town dump! As a natural resource professional,Kamal knew I would be fascinated by the environmental challenges of modern vs traditional lifestyles--and we brainstormed solutions while we drove to the nearby, larger town of Sefrou. Even older than the Fez Medina, Sefrou has a relaxed ambiance and much charm. Do not miss seeing the Melleh, the old Jewish quarter, and have lunch at the lovely Dar there. Afterwards, we visited a traditional blacksmith and other craft shops, bought fresh vegetables--then left the medina for a mountain side Berber community with fields of red poppies, old olive groves, sheep and goat herds and a lovely waterfall, gushing clear water from the cliffs above. After our hike, our appetites were keen for our next great meal at Dar Kamal Chaoui. This is sustainable eco-tourism at its best--we made a small donation to the community, knowing our host is dedicated to its preservation and well-being, while looking after each guest's needs and providing an incredible, unique experience! Don't miss it! We can't wait to return--and stay longer!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are beautiful and comfortable--if you don't mind a few stairs, go for the terra...

Coming from chaotic Casablanca, Dar KamalChaoui was the perfect place for a cosy weekend close to nature. No traffic. No noise. No 7th century mauresque mosaiques. But a warm house with a lot of charm. The host family, Kamal, Beatrice and Adam (their son) are extremely hospitable and will look after you almost like if you were an extension of their own family. Special thanks to Naima the chef of the most amazing Harira i've ever had. I am still craving it. I had an amazing time in Bhalil. I didnt even went to Fes in the end, not that it's too far but I was too happy to chill in the real rural Morocco.
