“Great Time at Technotel”
Reviewed 1 July 2013

My daughter and I booked this as an excursion via Autoprogreso in Progresso, Mexico. It was $35 and that included your transportation on a very comfortable bus, all the drinks you wanted and a buffet. Last year we went to the Yucatan Reef Club with AP and we liked Technotel better. We did not see the inside of the hotel so I can't comment on that but the outside grounds were beautiful. We opted for the additional side trip to Xcambo Mayan Ruins and Celestun National Wildlife Refuge which are included in the price. Our guide, Mario, was very informative and gave us a history of the arae as we took the 20 minute ride to the resort. Xcambo ruins is a very small site but interesting and to get there you drive through Celestun which had 100s of pink flamingos. We were allowed to get off the bus at both places and take pictures. Then we went back to Technotel and were greeted by a very clean beach and friendly staff. Plenty of kayaks and other water toys and a mariachi band entertained us on the beach. There were shaded areas and lots of chairs available. Water was a beautiful shade and green and mostly clear. Saw lots of colorful fish and found beautiful sea shells. We have always had a positive experience with our Autoprogreso tours and this was no exception. Will definitely visit again if in the area.

Room Tip: Sit up front on the Autoprogreso bus for a quieter ride. On the way back several passengers who had...

"All-inclusive" excluded all sodas, any beer except that poured from a bottle of Sol, beach umbrellas/palapas, comfortable beach seating, safely heated food, clean beach, activities, civilization, etc. The hotel is far from any other signs of life and offers little to do but swim in the pool or ocean. If purchasing this destination as an excursion and you find yourself bored to tears, you are stuck there for the remainder of the allotted time as they refuse to take you back into the city. Their brochures depict kayaking, jet skis, beautiful beaches, and beach shade, but discovered instead the pictures are meant to mislead consumers intentionally. We were told an all inclusive day included all available activities except massages and jet skis, however, they charged for the use of any of their three kayaks and there wasn't a jet ski in sight from either direction on the beach for as far as could be seen. Inquiring about any amenity or local shopping will get you a hearty assurance that anything you ask for is available, but this is the way they operate to get you to visit this location. Please do not go to this "luxury" hotel, which would rate about the same as a Motel 6 in the USA and be just about as much fun. The drinks were weak and watery, the food was questionably safe and surrounded by flies. A wasted day of vacation is all you will be left with if you choose to go here.

This hotel is in a nice location, about 20 minutes east of Progresso. There isn't any viable lodging in Progresso itself (I don't understand why) so this is really one of the closest decent places to stay on the ocean near Merida. The rooms are enormous and well equipped with a kitchen and all the amenities you need. Some rooms have a beach view and its only a few steps to the water's edge. There are two decent pools.

But, all that this hotel has going for it, it falls short in several ways that are completely within control of the management. First of all, we were awoken at 7:20 am by hip-hop music blaring from the beach bar (which happened to be just outside our window). No, I'm actually understating this - we weren't just awoken, we were knocked out of bed by the music as it was so loud that I couldn't even hear my wife saying "where the h*ll is that racket coming from?" After picking myself off the floor, and getting myself over to the window to look, I peered out to a completely empty beach bar - no customers, no bar tender, no staff -- apparently they were playing dance music for the staff at the other end of the property. Other knocks on the facility are the general unclean feeling in the room and in the bathroom, minimal toiletries and towels, pillows so flat and non-existent that I needed to put a book under my head to elevate it, and probably the worst thing was the beach itself - covered in litter and trash. I don't know if the hotel owns the beach or not, but if you're running a hotel that makes its money on the beach location, you sure better have staff picking up trash every morning before people climb out of bed (and before you start blasting hip-hop music). All of the nearby properties (which appeared to be condo complexes) had the same problem on the beach with heavy trash all along it - we just cut our walk short and checked out.

We didn't eat in the restaurant - the prices were a bit high and we just weren't hungry with the abrupt and unsolicited wake-up call, so we didn't want to give the hotel any more money. With a little better management, this hotel could be a nice destination but I would not recommend it in its current state.

Room Tip: Unless you don't value sleep on vacation, I would recommend getting a room as far away from the...

Stayed with the family (4 adults and 3 children) for a week in two connecting Jr. Suites. The staff was very attentive, room service in our private balcony overlooking the ocean was great! The Jr. suites are equipped with a kitchenette. Overall we enjoyed our stay and will be back!
