“What a joke!”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

My family and I stayed at the park over Easter. We had 3 rooms and a caravan site. Almost everything about this place was average. The rooms were old, broken and dirty. It was ridiculously OVERPRICED for what it offerred (we had family staying a few kms up the road and it was costing them $130 per night for a brand new hotel yet we paid $180 per night and as they stated when we checked in 'that was the cheap rate'). My brother couldn't book a site, it was first in, first serve. They claimed it was booking out quickly so his family arrived a day early to ensure they got a spot. There were no more than 10 cars (4 of ours) in the parking lot over the whole weekend. In one room we picked up the mat in front of the door and it was like they had swept the dirt under the mat. In our bathroom it seemed as though someone had shaken a bottle of creaming soda and opened the lid. There was red drips on the roof and running down the walls. We stayed three nights and didn't get new towels once yet the other rooms did. The one positive- we were lucky enough to get a newly renovated room which was done up nicely. Overall a very average experience.

We are disappointed to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay with us. Easter is normally a busy time for us and the Caravan Park section fills up quickly. As stated we don't reserve sites and state that on request. We are delighted that you experienced one of our renovated rooms, we are in the process of updating a greater number of rooms and look forward to our guests enjoying the experience.

Kind regards

My family stayed at the Canberra Carotel from the 9th to the 12th of January 2014. While it was not the most luxurious place we have stayed in (painting and other T.L.C. needed) our family bungalow had comfy beds and good air conditioning so we slept well. The pool was clean and appreciated during the hot weather. Located on the outskirts of Canberra, the Carotel was quiet at night and only about 10-15 mins drive from the city and tourist attractions. We found the staff helpful when we had questions about places to eat etc. The free wi-fi was difficult to access at first but once it kicked in worked well. While a stay here is not cheap it is less expensive than many other hotels in Canberra. It is practical for a family to stay at this hotel and, with the money saved, see the many attractions of the national capital.

the room was clean and neat with good facilities. The beds were comfy with plenty of pillows. The kitchen was well equipped. The pool was clean and on a 34 degree day just what we wanted. No shade was a shame and we did end up driving from the room to the pool because of the heat.

I was greeted at the counter by an extremely rude person who very quickly made a comment about our small group. The room was unbelievably dirty. Tiny shower smelled of mould and the exhaust fan was so loud every time you turned on the bathroom light, the sound belted throughout the room waking everyone, so people ended up going to the toilet in pitch black. Black marks on the ceilings from school children kicking the roof over the years. There was a corner missing from the edge of one of the nearby huts' roof and you could see extremely old insulation inside. The pool was acceptable but nothing to rave about. I could imagine some of the newer units are nicer inside but for what we paid for, we should have had a far better experience than what we did.

Do yourself a favour, shop around, some of our family stayed in a cheaper caravan park with a beautiful pool and playground equipment, across town and they paid for a two bedroom unit for less than our 4 bunk bed single room. So I guess this isn't just a "that's just what you pay for" situation.

Very disappointing.
1. Villas were quite good if you were in the double bedroom. If you were in the multi-person room, they were foam mattresses - bunks without a rail.
2. Food was fatty. 3 spring rolls and fried rice is not a balanced meal.
3. Staff were rude to everyone but the driver of our group.
4. Bungalows - did not have enough room in them to shower and dry as a teacher.
5. Bungalows - locked on exit and kids kept getting locked out.
6. Multi-Function room instructions say "next to the ramp" and there isn't a ramp.
7. Store was too easily accessible for students and only has junk food.

On a positive note, the bread in the lunches was good.

Room Tip: Villas for staff are good. Bungalows for students are good.

Dear Guest,

We are pleased that you found our Villas suitable for your teachers and the Bungalows good for the students. Thank you for identifying the incorrect reference for the Multi - Function room as we had missed ammending some of our literature on revamping our website.

Our aim is to provide a satisfactory experience for all customers and we do appreciate your feedback which helps provide direction toward this goal.

The Canberra Carotel looks forward to your next visit.

Kind regards,

Ian.

Like Derek T mentioned in his review, the room that we stayed in was nothing like what was advertised. And like Vanmerino, we thought this place must have been once a military camp or something similar. Unfortunately, I hadn't read their reviews before we booked our holiday at this establishment. When we arrived we expected an average, somewhat dated but clean room, what we got instead was: a small room lit by one florescent light; exceptionally narrow bathroom; very small shower with lukewarm water; a closet without doors; steel-frame bunk beds; sunken mattresses; bedding that felt somewhat damp; and a broken TV remote control. To make things worse, after our second day there (unfortunately we had paid up front via the internet), we asked if we could have our room cleaned / beds made, but we were advised that the rooms do not get cleaned, however the cleaning staff could replace our towels and clean out our single large rubbish bin if we wish. Huh?! I rented a room for $75 at a hostel once, and got the room cleaned every morning. For the price charged (well over $130 per night, which according to Michael E should have netted us a spa villa! We were shafted!!), this was terribly disappointing - and that's an understatement. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Instead I strongly advise paying the additional $5-$20 per night and stay at another hotel/motel. Just not here. Especially if you're on holiday with your family.

This place must have once been an army or scout camp. Brick huts around a central dining hall (didn't go in there and it wasn't mentioned at all by the reception staff on check-in, so have no idea what happens there) separated by acres of ashphalt. Hardly a tree to be seen. I understand they have a camping ground but didn't see it.

The rooms are spartan, tired and not very clean. The TV screen was very small and without Foxtel/Austar.

Apparently lots of interstate truckdrivers and groups of kids stay here, so from 5.30am there was a succession of huge trucks and big buses leaving, driving about three feet from the door of my room waking me up. There were screaming children running everywhere most of the time. The reception staff were bored, surly and clearly didn't want to be there.

The rates are too high for what this is - a glorified scout camp. Avoid.

Thank you for your response. We are disappointed that you didn't enjoy your stay with us as most of our guests do. In response to your article I would like to clarify some points for you and intending guests. The Canberra Carotel Motel was purpose built to accommodate individual guests, school children and a variety of other groups and yes on this occassion a group of truck drivers along with their trucks. The Dining Hall caters for groups not individuals and has a superior reputation for the meals and service it provides. Given that the Canberra Carotel Motel is situated on over 8 ha of land with approximately 139 rooms plus a Caravan Park the asphalt is required for safe travel and parking requirements. We do have a large selection of trees, shrubs and flowers planted around the grounds but due to safety requirements not near the rooms. We offer a large selection of various room types sizes and pricing to accommodate all budgets. We are currently undertaking major room renovations and in the near future a large selection of rooms will be presented in as new condition.Given the road network we have in place and the parking areas in the front of the rooms for individual guests vehicles there is no reason why any vehicle would need to travel in close proximity to your room as stated. Most children have travelled long distances prior to arriving and enjoy a run around in a controlled manner prior to bedding down for the night. We don't place individual guests next to school groups and we have a caretaker on duty after hours to ensure all guests requirements are met. I can assure you that our dedicated team of staff isn't bored; they all take great pride in their work and assisting all guests.
Kind regards, Robert
