Owner description: See the beautiful, the rare and the unexpected at the National Library of Australia on the shores of Canberra's Lake Burley Griffin. The ever-changing Treasures Gallery gives you free access to some of Australia's most moving stories. Make the journey and be intrigued, surprised, challenged and amazed by the stories these unique treasures tell. Highlights include material from the 1967 referendum and the campaign for Indigenous rights, as well as intriguing items from the life of poet Henry Lawson, including his fob watch and two of his pens. Enjoy unparalleled access to Australia's documentary heritage including books, serials, maps, newspapers, music and ephemera. Take in an exhibition, join a tour, browse the bookshop, or enjoy a bite to eat at Bookplate Cafe, taking in the lake-side views. Exhibition galleries are open from 10am to 5pm daily (except Christmas Day and Good Friday). Hours vary for the reading rooms, NLA Bookshop and Bookplate. Please see nla.gov.au/visit-us/opening-hours to plan your visit.

The National Library of Australia is a great place to go but dig a little deeper and you will find the National Treasures Gallery hidden within! Filled with original art, advertisements, jewelry and other items, it is amazing! As you leave, there are comfy seats around a TV with hidden speakers inside - very cool! We sat there for at least 20 minutes watching documentaries! Like most places in Canberra, this is free!

Some interesting museum pieces (and the recent map exhibbit) can be quite interesting, but you might find you had your expectations too high.

Quite surprised by what the National Library has to offer. Its not all about books ! Exhibitions are fabulous so allow time. We only managed to visit one area. Cafe on site is expensive so we gave that a miss.

Whether you want to see some of Australia's greatest treasures, find a long out of print book or do some family history research, this is the place to go. And nothing is too much trouble or too stupid a request for the amazingly cheerful staff.
