“Beautiful Room at a Great Price”
Reviewed 9 January 2013

We decided to go to Canberra for New Years Eve as the hotels in Sydney were charging ridiculous prices with long minimum stays. We booked on line and, upon arriving were told that our room wasn't ready. We waited for a few minutes and then, without too much fuss, they agreed to upgrade our room for no extra charge. Of course, we were very happy with this and were even more so once we saw the room which was large, clean, spacious, modern, had a spa bath, large TV and a big, very comfortable bed. The Air Conditioning was efficient and very quiet and meant that we had a very comfortable night after the evenings festivities which were in the City Centre which was just a short walk away. We paid less for this room than for most of the motels that we stayed in while travelling up and down the East Coast and we couldn't fault it in any way. Even the Checkout time was an hour later than all of them!

Room Tip: Ask for a Room Upgrade if you're kept waiting!

You would not have known the hotel was doing some renovation when we stayed there. It was peaceful, spotless and every single member of staff we met (even the cleaner in the corridor near our room) was friendly and said hello even if they were just passing by. Enjoyed the open plan room with the little desk 'nook' behind the bed. The buffet breakfast has to be seen to be believed. The baked beans were simply out of this world! It took us less than five minutes to get to the shops (something my sife took advantage of by dumping several loads of bags back in our room!) and about the same driving time to get to attractions like the Australian War Memorial.

First up the positives; the hotel is in a good location and close to the casino and center city shops. The rooms are a reasonable size and the bed is comfortable.

On the negative side it took about 20 mins to checkin. I had 3 rooms and 2 of the 3 were not serviced at 4pm when we opened the doors to enter. The duty manager did apologised and gave us a bottle of wine.

The bathrooms are dated. The room was noisy at night due the plumbing.

We ate in the hotel restaurant (Red Salt). There were about 9 of us. One of my sons ordered chicken and it arrived and wasn't cooked adequately. The other ordered a medium rare steak that was delivered well done. The other meals were OK but 1 came a lot later than the others. Ranked 246 of 653 by Trip adviser and appropriately so.

Breakfast is expensive - about $35 per person for the buffet. The selection of food was good.

Great value, very close to the city centre & a few attractions are walkable if you have a map. Staff very friendly and the room was immaculate clean & fresh and very inviting. The hotel has a very good inhouse restaurant where we had dinner one night again everything was perfect.

stayed here for business. customer service ok but not that friendly or helpful. room clean and its in a good location. parking really simple as well.

what i didn't like was the layout. My room looked into an auditorium. The restaurant was sunk in the middle of the hotel. there is a real lack of natural light, great idea for a casino, not great for a hotel. room was pretty small also.

Dear EAYGOING66,

Thank you for your review.
Many guest appreciate the open atrium which includes very large skylights and the central location of the restaurant although of course it is not to everyones preference.
All of our rooms face the outside with either a cityscape or views over the very lovely Glebe park.
We genuinely appreciate the feedback and hope that our great location and our goal to provide the highest quality service might tempt you to try us again.

We booked one night as just a place to sleep on our way home. We booked their least expensive, most basic room. Wow! There was nothing basic about that room!!!! We loved it so much that we stayed two nights. We were on the sixth floor, and the room was beautiful. I don't think I've ever seen a better designed room; particularly for a business person, with a separate office/desk area. The bed was big and comfortable, the carpet was soft and the bathroom well designed, with nice products. The blackout blind was very effective, and we slept very well. The foyer was very well designed with plenty of sofas to relax on and direct access to the casino was definitely a bonus! It was also just a short stroll to the shops and restaurants. Lovely, lovely, lovely!!!!!

Room Tip: Sixth floor has apparently recently been refurbished. It was lovely.

Stayed 2 nights just after Christmas. The location is excellent, just a short walk into the city restaurants and shopping, although this is a very quiet time to visit Canberra. Easy drive to the parlimentary zone, with the galleries, etc.

Room was as expected from a Crowne Plaza, reasonably large, with all facilities. Car parking was $18 per night however, which I found very expensive, as was the charge for WIFI. I consider charging for short periods of WIFI, eg, for checking emails, ridiculously exorbitant in Australian hotels.

I managed to get the room at a very good special rate, not really good value at their standard charges. Look around for deals. My room was on the city side, which unfortunately is being built out by new bulidings right across the road.

Room Tip: Park view if you can, there is a lot of construction and new buildings going up on the city side.
