“Great refurb and great value”
Reviewed 23 May 2011

We stayed her a few years back and found it an easy walk to the city centre, yet in a quiet location. The newly refurbed loft apartment was fantastic and all we needed. The restaurant looked great but we also had the option of the hotel bistro which proved more than adequate on the Sunday night. All in all he hotel met all our needs and although facilities were relatively few, staff were terrific. We'll certainly stay here again

I was disappointed with the quality of bedding. Pillows were too samll and soft. Woke several times during the night and ended up with a stiff neck. Quality of food in bistro was poor. Don,t believe the fish was barramundi.Had to have air conditioner attended to.

All was well, we have stayed there before. The rooms were good although with only a dooner on the bed we were a bit hot, but maybe that's us. The food was good, as was those who organized it. We had a great time and would use that hotel again. Value for money was very good in this expensive world we live in. Many thanks to all staff who assisted us greatly.

Olims is a good place to stay. Only negatives are the small rooms and the meals in the bistro are not too good. Steaks and chops ok but veges cold and steamed broccoli and cauliflour were effectively raw and cold. Gravies and sauces are too overwhelming. I'm looking forward to try the new restaurant but it was closed when I was there on a Monday and Sunday.

Thought it needed some work - no ramps at the entrance so had to carry bags up several steps instead of rolling them in.
A lot of steps all over the place , few ramps would be good as we found ourselves lifting our cases up and down even more steps after we'd checked in.
Not sure how safe the rear car park is as it is very open - no secure fences etc.
We thought this hotel was a work in progress. A few building improvements would make a difference.

Olims Canberra Hotel is a place I immediately felt comfortable in. Gardens, space, balconies on a central axis (albeit with a poorly designed fountain that should set the whole thing off). Room fine for our purposes with good shower, excellent bed and superior linen.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Mercure Canberra, a part of Canberra's history Originally known as the Hotel Ainslie, Mercure Canberra was built to provide accommodation for public servants relocating to Canberra to support the transfer of the Commonwealth Parliament. It is one of eight remaining government built hotels or hostels from Canberra's first stage of development in the 1920s and is listed in the Register of the National Estate. Mercure Canberra is historically significant for its important role in the development of North Canberra and the forging of its community identity. While maintaining many original features, the hotel embraces the need for 21st century comforts to ensure you feel welcome and have an enjoyable stay. Our 129 guest rooms are well appointed and have been decorated in keeping with the heritage style of the building. Our Standard rooms are located in the Heritage wing, with the layout and style of room not changing from the hotels' original days. For those looking for a more modern layout, you may wish to select one of our Superior or Deluxe Loft rooms in the newer part of the building. Our guests have the option to dine at our onsite Courtyard Restaurant serving modern Australian cuisine in the evening and a choice of Continental or Buffet breakfast in the morning. Those looking for a more casual dining experience can enjoy Bistro style meals from our Olims Bar & Bistro, a favourite spot for hotel guests and locals to mingle, serving Craft Beers & Cider from our very own Lovedale Brewery Our location is ideal. 600m from the Australian War Memorial commemorating those who serve our country, both past and present. Most of Canberra's National Attractions are within 10 minutes' drive from the hotel and the CBD is and easy 10 minute walk away and offers a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as shops and a Dendy Movie Cinema.
