“Art Deco style by the lake”
Reviewed 5 December 2013

Finding myself in Canberra for a weekend, I booked myself in to the Hyatt - one of the original Canberra hotels, in an elegant heritage building that retains some Art Deco touches.

The building looks deceptively small from the front (at Commonwealth Avenue), but extends quite some way back from the street, over about three floors. The room - a standard Park King - was large and spacious, had a view over the garden, and was equipped with a very nice marble-finished bathroom with separate shower and bath.

Arriving late evening, I ordered a room service meal (something I usually try to avoid when travelling), which was of good quality and served hot. Breakfast downstairs was also quite good - buffet style, and a generous selection.

The Hyatt is close to the Parliamentary zone, which is on the other side of the lake from the city centre. There are no shops within convenient walking distance. Having said that, with a car, it is very easy to get to the city (a few minutes' drive away) and to the shops and restaurants in Manuka and Kingston (about 10 minutes). There is plenty of free outdoor parking at the hotel.

Old Parliament House, the National Library, Questacon and the art galleries are within easy walking distance, and the surrounding area is flat. Lennox Gardens and the shore of Lake Burley Griffin are right behind the hotel, and are lovely places to walk or jog.

The Hyatt is perhaps not the most conveniently placed hotel in Canberra, but occupies a lovely spot near the lake, and offers very comfortable and classy accommodation.

I stayed at the Canberra Hyatt for 3 nights in November on a business trip.

I loved the layout and then rooms were pretty great. It didn't feel like they cool the hallways though.

The rooms are spacious and the bathrooms are superb. The restaurant food is very good and High Tea is something to experience.

All of the staff was polite and helpful.

The hotel is in a fantastic location. Easy access to running/walking trails as well as several other things to do in the Canberra area. I appreciated being close to the lake and the scenic trails around the lake. I spent a beautiful Saturday afternoon running and walking around the lake with ease of access back to the hotel.

This isn't a shiny resort, which is why I give it 4 rating not 5, but as far as a 4 rating, it's about as good as it gets. Canberra just isn't a tourist destination so you really can't expect more out of a hotel in the area.

Just spent Saturday night at the Hyatt , our second stay here, and it wasn't as good as our first. Look, I love the building and the grounds and how close it is to the Galleries etc, we've never had a problem with service or noise BUT the first room we had you could open a window and this time we couldn't. If fresh air is important to you, ask for a room with a window you can open! Relying on the intermittent and noisy airconditioning made for a poor nights sleep. Stuffy room, uncomfortable bed and very firm pillows which gave me a very sore neck.
Then on returning home they sent an email saying they were going to charge us for things from the mini bar which we DID NOT consume. That has been resolved, but really annoying. And finally on both visits they only provided 3 regular tea bags in a king suite booked for 2 people, why not 4? Makes sense to me. When my husband asked for some more tea they took our room number! Thought we were going to be charged extra for that as well. Little things add up.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a window you can open

We travelled with 3 of our kids aged 17-5. We got two rooms that could be connected. the rooms were nice, maybe a bit dated. Annoying that this hotel charges a premium rate but does not honour the AMEX privileges that other Hyatt's do. Food in the restaurant was ok. Breakfast again was ok. Cocktails were great in the lounge! For the price, have stayed in much better. I will not stay here again but try one of the newer hotels in Canberra.

This hotel claims to be a Park Hyatt; the rooms and service do not even come close to other Park Hyatt's that we've stayed in throughout the world. Rooms are generic; concierge lounge food and service very disappointing. Front desk people are rude, as was the concierge when we asked about the freebie tourist bus. Food is expensive in the restaurant; $39 for the breakfast buffet and $65 for the seafood buffet. We were in Canberra to celebrate my husband's birthday. A disappointing stay.

I keep trying new place in Canberra to find something I'm really happy with, nd the Hyatt wins so far. The rooms are spacious, well fitted out and the service is impeccable. My only complaint with the Hyatt is location. Nothing is walking distance from the hotel, except for some pleasant walks.

Room Tip: Never had a bad room at the Hyatt (four stays there at the time of writing)

We stay at this great hotel every year both for business and for pleasure. The rooms are extremely comfortable, the service is excellent, the breakfasts generous and high tea is a real treat. Light meals in the garden are great. You feel as if you are back in colonial times. One of the best things is the heated pool situated in the gym, but choose the time you go to use it, so you get it to yourself. Canberra is great at this time of the year. Make sure you visit the National Gallery, including the James Turrell sculpture, which is an absolute must, and the War Memorial. The restaurants in Manuka are great too! The hotel is well situated to all of these attractions. You can also take a walk around Lake Burley Griffin.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel where you will be guaranteed a quiet and peaceful night.
