If you have time this is a wonderful spot. May have a special exhibition on - eg Renoir - but always has something good. And, a best kept secret upstairs - the Café. Excellent food and awesome views. Good parking underneath - but go early.

The Gallery has some real gems. Our visits to Canberra have visited coincided with the Impressionists Exhibition, the opening of the new Aboriginal art section and for the Toulouse Lautrec Exhibition. But the pièce de résistance was the James Turrell sculpture! I won't spoil it for you, but find out what time you should be there and make sure you are sitting down inside it fifteen minutes before sunrise or sunset!

Having been to Melbourne Gaol whilst on the our travels we particularly wanted to see the Sidney Nolan series of paintings telling the story of Ned Kelly that he completed whilst at Heide (Another Place we have visited). We were not disappointed for they are beautifully displayed in a special room in the heart of The National Gallery. Not only were we able to follow the series in detail, but we also listened in to several guided tours that were being given for attentive school parties. The Gallery itself is extensive and the variety of items in the various permanent collections impressive. The opening times are 10.00am until 05.00pm daily and entry is free. It was good to see that the Roy Lichtenstein exhibit in two areas can also be enjoyed without any additional fee. One tip for this and other galleries and museums in Canberra is to take the special Centenary Bus that travels between sites. It is free and a timetable leaflet can be obtained at the information centre.

A great gallery which displays a number collections. You could easily spend an afternoon or morning in the gallery as there are a number of works worth looking at. Well worth a visit when you are in the nation's capital....and then once you've finished walk across the way to the national portrait gallery.
