“Spacious, clean, quiet in a good location”
Reviewed 11 November 2011

Located in a convenient and quiet part of Canberra, University House is ideal for those who want clean, spacious, and comfortable accommodation. Despite the 1960s exterior, the ensuite bathrooms are newly renovated with fluffy white towels, bath, shower, and complimentary hotel toiletries. Parking is available with a free permit from the front desk. Minibar, breakfast, and dinner available onsite. For the comfort, space, and quality, one of the best value places in Canberra. You don't have to be associated with the university, it's a regular quiet hotel with a reading room rather than huge plasma TVs.

We travel to Canberra about once a year and tend to stay in a different hotel every time, mainly because there are always new ones popping up. University House was a pleasant surprise. Its location is a plus - amongst the beautiful University precinct, close to Lake Burley Griffin and a 10 minute walk to the city and plenty of restaurants and bars. The decor is quirky "retro" with some interesting 1950s furniture which is tastefully complemented with some more modern touches. The room was large with a separate bedroom and living room, all very clean and quiet. The bathroom has had a recent update which was great. A huge private balcony with a nice outlook was also a plus. We had no problems with power point placement or appliances as a previous reviewer mentioned, but maybe it depends on what room you get.
The quadrangle gardens and fish pond are peaceful and conjure up an image of academic contemplation when you remember the building originally housed the University professors and students.
There is also free off street parking and our breakfast at the Boffins restaurant was included which made it quite good value. Although not all that cheap, once we took into account the free and accessible parking, inclusive breakfast and a very large clean room, and compared it to some of the other hotels we have tried in Canberra (occasionally disappointing even when brand new), we were very pleased with University House. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: If you have trouble taking a suitcase up steps (there appear to be no lifts) or are infirm, we would...

I wanted to like the hotel but the room facilities were just not there! eg there was a lovely desk but no power point for the computer and the jug had to be boiled on the window sill as the short cord did not reach anywhere else. The lounge room was big but filled with unsuitable furniture from the 50s. There was a separate bedroom but the door would not close as the bed was in the way. The breakfast was lovely and the Restaurant menu was impressive. Hint: Don't order the Garlic Sauce on the Filet Mignon.
The hotel just needs to be brought into this century while still maintaining the pleasures of the past.

Room Tip: Bring an extension cord.

This place is hard to get a booking as it has become so popular. Older style, but clean with updated bathrooms, the spacious rooms enter off stairways from a Quadrangle.
Underfloor heating in the bathrooms make it comfortable in the Winter.
If you are lucky enough to be there on the right night, the "House Dinners" are great. Simple food with wines included they have a Guest Lecturer as an after-dinner speaker.
Good wi-fi and library facilities.
There is a Restaurant, Boffins which is ordinary, but the Cafe where breaky is served is good for lunch and dinner too.

I really don't want to tell you about University House!! If I do, then you will all go and stay there!!.
At the moment, its beautifully quiet, with friendly service and a unique atmosphere. Secure parking right outside, lovely grounds , HUGE cooked breakfast with wide selection of food to chose from and the most convenient location in the middle of the University (almost in the centre of Canberra). There is a library, a bar and an excellent restaurant on site, with tasteful modern decor which compliments the Heritage feel of the place. University House is cheaper than hotels, better located than most of them, much more interesting and certainly more beautiful. The rooms are wonderful heritage retreats, with heavy 1950's wooden furniture. Spotlessly clean. Not flash, but everything is clean and works. A minor maintenance problem was fixed for us within 3 hours.
If you want glitzy, or if you need very child friendly, go somewhere else. If you want quiet, comfortable and old fashioned accomodation for adults and older children, this is the place for you.
Just don't tell your friends - lets keep this treausre to ourselves!!!

This is a classic old boarding house. Rooms are dowdy & very old fashioned, but you can't help but love just how old-fashioned & dowdy they are. It's almost fashionable retro. Almost, but not quite.

The rooms have huge wooden desks that I'm sure were dragged straight out of one of ANU's libraries. There's a little balcony, & plenty of heating. The bathrooms have under floor heating - awesome! There are lovely view across the pleasant courtyard from the upper floors, & the location is good.

Nice old, basic study bedrooms at this hotel which were used by resident professors until very recently. The building and much of the furniture and fittings inside date from the 1950s, but they are quite charming really.

The accommodation is obviously ideal if you are visiting the University, but a car is really needed if you want to see around Canberra. No bars or restaurants are within walking distance, other than those found on the campus itself (and the ones in Uni House close very early).
