Stayed here for two nights for business. Got a good rate that included breakfast. Arrived on a stinking hot Canberra day, the aircon was on and my room was nice and cool. The hotel is old but has been nicely refurbished and was fine for a short stay with little time spent in the room. Lots of things close by, you just need to look them up, at first glance there seems to be nothing nearby. There are lots of other similar hotels and clubs tucked away if you know where to look. Would stay here agin.

Another great stay at The Brassey. Cheerful check in and help with a query of ours from front of house staff. A suggestion for improvement would be some fly screens on the windows of rooms that no longer have them, to allow the evening breeze in.

I booked a corporate function with the Brassey, and while the event itself was good, the booking, organisating, and coordination in the lead up to the event was terrible.
The Brassey failed to explain all charges and were extremely slow to respond to my queries. I was charged for items I was not expecting to be charged for, and when I gave my feedback to the general manager asking for these charges to be removed he was extremely unhelpful and dismissive.
I will not be using this facility again and I do not recommend it.

Mark S, General Manager at Brassey Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 22 December 2013

The original inquiry made by this client was for a dinner party for a significant number of guests and a three course menu which was priced to included room hire.

What was actually booked was a much smaller function for a lesser number of people, a down sized menu and the quote did not include room hire, as indicated in our corporate function brochure.

The client was advised that a room hire charge would apply, however we would be prepared to offer a 50% discount on the listed price.

The client responded, in writing acknowledging the room hire charge and I quote
“Requesting further discount”, which due to the downsized event we declined to offer.

However, we did offer to waive the room hire if the confirmed numbers were 50 or more. There were 40 attendees.

There were several changes made to the original booking due to dietary requirements and on each occasion a “running sheet” outlining all charges (including room hire) was emailed to the client for review. There was never a question raised regarding the room hire component of the charges applicable.

Far from being unhelpful or dismissive of the clients query, I conducted complete review of all correspondence between the client and my staff (some 30pages) and then responded outlining the facts as per the paper trail.

It is disappointing that on this occasion the client has chosen to misrepresent what transpired in order to create mischief.

The Brassey is a grand old boutique hotel. Yes it might have creaky stairs and some narrow corridors but has a charm of its own. I've stayed several times for business and would recommend it to other travellers. It is conveniently located within easy walking distance to the Parliament House precinct, National and Portrait gallerys as well as to Manuka restaurants and shops. It's only a short taxi ride into the CBD. The location is quiet and the gardens surrounding the hotel are lovely. The Heritage Rooms all have traditional touches which does make it a bit more special than staying in a generic hotel room. Rooms are a good size and clean and well-maintained. If you choose the dine-in option for dinner there is a reasonable selection of meals - including a couple of vegetarian options. Breakfast is substantial. Staff are friendly and helpful. If you don't stay there wih expectations that it will feel and sound like a new hotel your stay will be enjoyable.

Hotel rooms are dirty, you cannot see out of the windows when the sun shines on them, have not been cleaned in ages. Rooms are covered in dust, we had to clean all shelves so we could put our clothes out. You can write your name on everything in the room due to the thick dust. Doors, window sills, skirting boards are filthy with thick dirt on all the groves and ledges, this is years of dirt. Fridge is frozen solid , you cannot open the ice box. Floors were never vacuumed during our four day stay, we know as we spilt a little talcom powder on the carpet on the first day, it was still there when we left. Some days they would forget to make the beds !!!!! Clearly there is no supervision or management in this Hotel. Our friends had the same complaint, so they requested a room change, just to get another dirty room. Bathrooms are minute, that said rooms are of a good size and there is a good hot water supply.

Very tired and rooms not at all well cleaned (filthy windows, dusty furniture).
Very noisy - paper thin walls, noisy plumbing, door closers caused doors to slam shut.
Breakfasts were good but again, dining room not well cleaned.
Cleaning comments - I'm sure rooms are cleaned daily but much more attention to detail required - surfaces, tiles, light switches, doors.
Also noticed a number of issues requiring maintenance - towel rail, balcony door latch.
Hotel could be very good with a makeover and good management.

Clean and comfortable but rooms need an update to reflect tariff. No wifi except in the bar and then it was patchy at best. Breakfast was great but restaurant evening meals average. The service in the restaurant was great - efficient friendly service made the effort to remember your name - very welcoming. Room very dark, overlooked conference courtyard. Loved the setting. location and convenience to other areas of Canberra. Admin staff great regarding internet booking - really efficient however Reception staff in general not very welcoming. Quiet peaceful setting.

Room Tip: Ask to see room before checking in.
