“Ok stay, but not hassle free”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2013

Stayed 2 nights in a suite room. Check in was pleasant & quick. Got to the room & went to put some cold things we'd bought in the frig & it was warm. Turned the dial in the frig, still no good. Ended up pulling the frig out completely to find it was switched off at the PowerPoint at the back - odd, so turned it on but took a few hours to get cold. The main (and only) light in the bathroom did not work the next morning, so rang reception to say we would be out most of the day so they could fix it. Came back later & not fixed - rang reception & they came fairly quickly but could not fix the light & said there was no maintenance person available. So for the remainder of the stay, I had my bedside lamp set up in the bathroom so I could see. When the room was serviced, they did not leave a bath mat, so had to call & get one. The plastic cards don't work well to get into the rooms & into the car park as you have to repeatedly keep trying before it works. One of the housekeepers helped us & said it happens quite a bit. Apart from all that, the rooms were clean & comfy and the surrounds were quiet. These issues are not the end of the world, but when you go away for a short break, you just want a clean comfy room & a hassle free experience & ours was not.

This was my first visit to Canberra and I chose this hotel as it appeared pretty close to the downtown area, and was reasonably priced.
The building used to be the Canberra International Motor Inn, and dates back to the 70's (Malcolm Fraser opened it). Its unusual in it's design, rooms overlook an atrium and have a cruise ship feel, but both corridors and rooms are well maintained if a little older. Being an old building, expect noises from plumbing throughout the night, which woke me up a few times. The AC unit also made a ticking sound which was a little concerning.
There are no mini bars, dispensers for toiletries, and limited other in room extras.
Check in was smooth, check out was also without hassle, albeit very early with a 10am departure required.
This is not a 4 star hotel, treat it as a 3 star motor inn style property and at $135 a night, good value However if you do not have a car, this is perhaps not the best choice, as is a good 25 minute walk to the downtown area. There is a good restaurant strip full of Asian choices about 10 minute walk north of the property.

I have stayed at the Pavilion 3 times in the last year or so, and have found it to be the best value on a price/location comparison. The staff have always been friendly and helpful and there is secure parking.

I have found that a lot of hotels are going to dispensers rather than giving away soaps and toiletries, but that's not an issue for me.

The beds are comfortable and the rooms are quiet. I have never had a problem with staff or the rooms. I had the buffet breakfast on one occasion only and thought it was ok (I don't often have breakfast when I'm away).

Looks fine from the outside. On entering, you step back in time. Old, drab, dark and cold is the entrance and reception.

Rooms are not much better. All fixtures and fittings were old and worn, most of the furniture having marks or have been chipped. No mini bar amenities unless you pre order. Room service food was of very poor standard. The bathrooms have soap dispensers which require you to apply almost all your body weight to use. Towels smelt like they'd been washed in with kitchen towels!

The heating in my room did not work, I had it set to 30 for 3 hours and I was still cold. I was provided with a portable heater. Beds do not have electric blankets - this is Canberra!

The breakfast restaurant was more like a tacky cafeteria. Poor quality food and instant coffee. I still haven't worked out what the scrambled eggs actually were...

Room Tip: Try somewhere else!

The pavillion has an interesting foyer lined with indoor plants but not giving off a vibe that you'd want to linger around the garden.
The rooms were ok. Clean yes. But lacking any charm. We had the spa suite and oddly a shower head extended over the spa with no shower curtain or anything to stop the room from getting flooded.
The location is good and approximate 10 min walk from all the action.

Unusual design for a hotel. Friendly, efficient reception. Very basic bedrooms with poor bathrooms. Unusual arrangement of rooms around a very large atrium eating area, which made it dark and uninviting; like eating in a jungle. Room service was fairly good but I was not allowed to order hot drinks in the room because they are afraid of the drinks getting cold before delivery; no concern about the food getting cold before delivery ? Excellent secure parking facilities.

I feel obliged to provide a review of this hotel since many of the earlier ones weren't very good. I had to stay here because my client chose and paid for it. To be honest I wasn't happy given the other reviews. So I spent two nights there rather begrudgingly and you know what? It was fine.
The rooms are abit old, the furniture not new but for the things that mattered it was all fine. The bed was comfortable, I asked for a quiet room and they seemed familiar with that being a potential problem. The service was great actually and the food in the restaurant really nice. I had one room service meal which just plain wasn't good. I gave them that feed back and they cut the price by 50% on checkout. It is centrally located, full of travellers and the bathroom drain that was plugged when I checked in was sorted right away. No hassles. Canberra isn't a cheap place to stay and their rates are very reasonable.
