“Homely double rooms, kitchen needs a good clean”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

Lovely stay very comfortable and homely place, only ten min walk to Darling Harbour. Staff very friendly and reasonable prices at the bar downstairs.
However kitchen needs a good spring clean, there are ants in the sugar jar and crawling on the bench also cockroaches came running out from grill when using it and seemed to be under the units too.
Overall good stay, would definitely come back if kitchen got a good clean.

This is a hotel with a tiny pub on the ground floor. The rooms are clean and it is incredibly good value for the location. (quiet street but very central).

The hotel has just been renovated from the looks of things. I also had some great food that was cheap for sydney standards in the attached restaurant and met some nice local people in the bar (which shuts at midnight at the latest). definitely recommending to friends

More expensive than the average hostel, but had the worst experience. Arrived and was given the key to our room by the rudest girl who said there was some 'stuff' she was supposed to tell us about the rooms, hotel etc but she couldnt remeber it so to ask other guests. She then didnt know where our room was so told us to go and search for it.
Our room was cold and noisy, but some noise was to be expected being above a pub. Unfortunately we had booked 3 nights at this awful place and didnt sleep one o them. The music was played until 4am every night, which kept us awake even with ear plugs. Then one night there was a massive brawl at 3am and the police were called.
Then when we went to complain, the only person we could find was the cleaner. On checking out the same cleaner told us to leave the keys on the bar as there was still no one around to speak to. Would have rather stayed in a hostel, biggest mistake 'treating ourselves' to this horrible place.

Hi,

Thanks for your review.

-We are not more expensive than your average hostel. We are actually much less expensive.

-Being that we close at midnight at the latest the music being played until 4am must have come form a neighboring room or property. You should have notified us while you where staying.

-Also, if police responded to someone outside the hotel on the street at 3am that had nothing to do with the hotel.

Regards

When my boyfriend and I arrived, we were barely acknowledged by the staff. I have never met anyone so rude. There was also construction work going on at the time; however, we were flippantly told by the staff that there was "painting" going on outside and that it would be finished in "a few hours". Suffice to say that it was still going on five days later with drilling beginning at 7am and construction workers working right outside our window.

The website of the hostel states that it is a ten minute walk to the city centre which is a gross inaccuracy - it is actually a 10 minute walk to the train station, which then takes another 10/15 minutes to get to the city centre. Please rectify this mistake on your website!!

We were also told when we arrived that another girl had our room key because she had thought that she would be able to reserve the room that night as she had been staying there the night before. When we raised our obvious concerns about this we were told, "oh don't worry, she'll probably come back sometime tonight"! So we had to drag our valuables around with us all day in the city and worry about the fact that some random girl could walk in on us at any time during the night!

We were also checked into two different rooms for some bizarre reason (obviously a lack of care, since this place was so disorganised). So this meant that we had to check out of our old room on the second-last day and check into a new one, which meant waiting around on our second last day to be checked into a new room when we could have been exploring Sydney!! We were booted out of the old room at 10:30 and were then told, to our frustration, that it would be an hour and a half waiting time before we could be checked into our new room! Although there wasn't a smell of gas in the new room (which was a problem in the old room that we had) it was also a lot colder and we were colder in there than we were outside.

I am actually incredulous that a place like this has not gone out of business. Not once did we receive apologies for the above. Avoid like the plague!!!

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the top floor to avoid the noise and the smell of gas. But if you are especial...

Hi,

I spoke to your for about twenty minutes from the moment you arrived...You were not ignored by staff. I am sorry if you felt this way.

I explained that scaffolding was being erected for the exterior to be painted. That was noisy but it was completed in several hours, (by 3pm). After that there was no drilling, just painting during the day.

The smell of gas you complain of would have been paint fumes. For that I am sorry, but I assure you it was not hazardous.

I got the room key from the girl who had taken it as soon as she returned. Before that I had asked you if you would like my to keep your valuables in the office safe. You did not.

The train station you write of is the same distance from us as the city centre is. Feel free to consult a map to check this.

You made your own booking online, we are not responsible for you having inadvertently booked two different rooms.

As to your assertion that the interior of the building is colder than it is outside of the building,
I assure you that it is not. We would have been happy to provide you with extra linens had you asked.

Regarding your 'Room tip' to other travelers, the 2nd floor is not in fact colder than the 1st floor, I can again assure you of this. I think that Sydney's changing weather conditions during your stay may have led you to some false conclusions about the hotel.

Kind Regards,

Daniel

The Lord Wolseley Hotel is a little gem, tucked away just a block from noisy, smelly Harris Street, in a quiet, location, a park at the front door where the patrons spill out onto the footpath in this little old fashioned pub in the heart of Sydney. There are 2 enormous paper bark trees out the front with stag horns attached. The most enormous stag horn I have ever seen sits above the front door. This is a family owned pub, that maintains the original ambiance. You get a great , cheap meal at the little bistro at the back...old fashioned service, simple but tasty food that represents great value. We had a great Panang Beef Curry, pork and fennel sausages and mash, fish, Green Chicken Curry , all fantastic! It is still the "local" but the alternative set will quickly get onto this one, with great live music on Saturday nights. There is plenty of white paper and crayons for the kids. Apparently it is the narrowest hotel in Sydney. Do yourself a favour, if you like something a little different and an authentic experience, check this one out.

Stayed only for one night as we didn't know any better. A bed in a shared accommodation is good enough for us as we were dog tired. The location is quite alright and it was quiet so had a pretty good sleep.

We stayed here for a week and thought it was alright. The place is dated and the facilities needed upgrading (not much of a kitchen) as the bedroom looked really old and shabby. It was comfortable enough and we found it to be quiet. Pretty good location too. Not bad considering we hadn't paid much for our stay. The staff were friendly and provided us with a great map of Sydney. The food in the cafe to the side of the bar was pretty tasty and cheap too.
