Had a good time. In fairness it was the crowd that made it but got good roof top to drink on. If you want luxury your barking up the wrong tree. If you wanna good time in a great location, this is the one.

I lived in the Strand for months and i really enjoyed my time. There are two kitchens in the Strand, but i preferred the one on the roof. It is a great location up there. You can see the skyline of sydney and i think you also can see the harbour bridge. Check it out and you'll see. There are clean bathrooms on each floor.
Nice small and clean hostel, the Place to be ;-)

Room Tip: I stayed in a four bed dorm, really good

Overall stay was quite bad. We needed an inexpensive place to stay in Sydney for the night so that we could pick up our hire car the next morning to head to the Blue Mountains. The hostel is over a pub and to get to your rooms you must carry your bags up a few flights of stairs (not uncommon for Backpackers accomodation).
The 3 of us stayed in a room for 4 with two bunk beds. The first thing we noticed was that the door had obviously been kicked/knocked down at some point and the wood around the latch was broken. The latch was actually just hanging there and although the door did and could lock, it could have easily been broken open with a firm push on the locked door.

The cleanlines of the room was very bad. The pillowcases had makeup stains all over them (the kind that would come out if thrown in the washing machine. You could pretty much see where a girl wearing lots of makeup laid her head by the foundation, mascara and lipgloss stains) and we noticed blood on the wall while packing our bags in the morning (yes, blood- the three of us all took a good look to make sure we weren't seeing things).

The room was also very hot and we had to open the unscreened window onto loud traffic in order to stay cool enough to sleep.

The bathrooms and hallway were very clean and quite nice in comparison to the room we stayed in. Although the bathrooms were quite small for a communal bathroom (only 1 toilet and 2 sinks) so in the morning the ladies bathroom was awkward and crowded. The service was good and check in went smoothly so that was positive.

Overall we were definitely happy to get out of there. Unfortunately if you're on a budget that's really the only place within short walking distance to the car rental places but I recommend choosing one of the chain hostels (we stayed in those too) and walking the extra distance. The Strand doesn't have much going for it to justify staying there and we were definitely not impressed with the cleanliness of the room.

The hostel is actually on top of a pub. I'd made a last minute booking so ended up with a four bed dorm to myself, if you have a heavy suitcase you'll have to carry it upstairs as there's no lift, but this shouldn't affect the backpacking brigade.

Facilities are a bit tired looking, but cleaned regularly, there's two kitchens, one has an outdoor BBQ with a chill-out covered (great for when it's raining) smoking area on the roof, the other is smaller unit but couldn't find space to store food but maybe I didn't look hard enough.

The bar downstairs has regular deals on food and the staff are always friendly and helpful, plus you've got to do the Thursday quiz night if you get the chance.

It's about a 5 to 10 minute walk from either Kings Cross or Museum stations or if you're coming from the airport, try and book a shuttle bus which can take you directly there.

It's located on a busy road junction but that didn't affect my sleep and the room although basic would've housed four people easily, city centre is about a 5 minute walk away, with the club and bar district right on your doorstep.

Room Tip: The reception for the hostel is in a pub, it's on the left hand side or ask a member of bar staf...

The Strand Hotel is a hostel above a bar. The location is great - halfway along william street between the sydney cbd & kings cross.
The building is secure, the staff friendly & the hostel is relaxed.
It is an old building but there have been renovations done to tidy it up ( I stayed here 3 years ago & its improved alot )

There is a big deck up on the roof where everyone hangs out, along with the kitchen & washing area.

Lockers in the rooms, comfy bunks & clean bathrooms make it a good place to stay for the price.

It is a bit of a party hostel but not crazy, just a bit noisy. get a 4 or 6 bed dorm & its okay. Go for a 10 bed & it gets a bit loud.

I stayed for a couple of days to see what it was like & booked an extra week to get the weekly deals.

We just stayed one night as we traveled back through Sydney. We reserved two beds in a 3-bed dorm and nobody else checked in so we had the room to ourselves. The beds are comfortable and overall the hostel is very clean. There were big cozy blankets on the beds as well. The bathrooms are well-kept and they even have soap. Even though there is a pub below the rooms, we weren't kept up by any noise at all. Some noisy guests but with so many rooms we only heard people coming and going a couple times. There's no real reception area as you just check in at the bar so sometimes there wasn't someone around who could answer your questions.

The only downside was that we had to leave before 6am and the kitchen was locked up so we couldn't get our breakfast! We didn't know they locked it. We were able to find an employee in the pub who (somewhat unwillingly) unlocked it for us. The kitchen itself was decent but as usual, there wasn't much fridge or shelf space so it might not be great if you're there for a while and using the kitchen. But there's lots of places within walking distance of this hostel. It's maybe about 5-10 minutes to walk into the main street of King's Cross. Oh and it cost us about $38 (including tip) for a taxi to the airport and it took around 20 minutes. We took a shuttle there but it took over an hour with all the other drop offs.
