“We'd come back to this Value For Money apartment”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2012

I'd like to share our experience about this apartment during our recent trip to Sydney.

We were there in early April to attend a family wedding and we decided to extend it into a short family vacation. In our search for a suitable apartment to accommodate my family, we found that the rates in Sydney is rather exorbitant. We then found this apartment and having read the various reviews, we decided to give it a shot.

The experience that we had during our week long stay in Sydney was a pleasant one and we're very satisfied with our accommodation. If you grasp the concept of "what you pay is what you get" you'll definitely be pleased with what this place has to offer.

The rates that we paid was one of the lowest that we could get and given that, we had more than we bargained for. Our 2 bedroom apartment was just right for the kids and us and it comes with a a fully equipped kitchenette. It can be quite costly if you're going to dine in the cafes or restaurants for all 3 daily meals for a week. It certainly helped that there's a supermarket about 2 blocks away. There's a convenient store even nearby if you're too bum to walk to the supermarket.

It didn't bother me at all with the fact that I had to bring the trash down to the bin located at the basement carpark. It's simply a ride in the lift which is about 3 steps away from your door.

We simply love it's location. It's just stone's throw away from the Darling Harbour. Paddy's market is just a monorail ride away and it also takes you to the main street as well. You're virtually within reach of all networks that brings you around Sydney.

Other than some minor language issues with one of the staff, which I think is still at a acceptable level, I only have good comments to make of thiss apartment.

Both my wife and I are from the hospitality industry and in our humble opinions, this place serves our purpose very well and helped us make the trip a very pleasant one. You can't expect 5 star service when you're not actually paying 5 star prices. Sometimes, you have to manage your expectations with your affordability. Credit is given when credit is deserved.

I'll be happy to take any questions that any future visitors might have about this apartment.

Having read the not-so-nice reviews, was a little apprehensive about staying at the Harbour Phoenix during our recent trip to Sydney.
Surprisingly.., the apartment exceeded our expectations in more ways than one!
For those of you with kids, you will understand that cost is certainly a factor to be considered when you travel with a family of 5. Harbour Phoenix was indeed value for money. The place was averaged in size but, most importantly the apartment, beds and linen were comfy and clean.
Meals were economical as Coles is within walking distance and we could easily whip up the food that my 2-year old is used to back home.
It has great location too, within walking distance to Darling Harbour, Imax, Aquarium, Boat rides to the Taronga Zoo etc.... The children playground and parks at Darling Harbour were also a great hangout for the kids... they had a swell time!
We will certainly use the apartment again when we visit Sydney next... :-)

We booked 3 appartments for our daughters wedding. All persons were very satisfied with rooms. General cleanliness of rooms was above average.Great value if sharing.Found staff obliging and friendly.Beware..change of towels costs extra $45 and lost keys $550. OUCH! Excellent location.

Room Tip: All rooms basically the same.

Good location. Walking distance to Darling Harbor. But this is NOT a service apartment unless you pay extra. So you would NOT have your unit cleaned, the tea/coffee added, etc with the amount of money that you pay.

we spoke to staff on sunday 18/3/2012 and wished to book 3 appartments in may, we were quoted $295 per unit and $25 per car space for one night stay. Rang back on thursday 22nd to confirm and pay for units only to be told by very rude woman with limited ability of english that the rooms were now $395 per unit. After 4 more calls in attempt to speak to the manager we were told must bee a mist communication and they velly solly and could give us huge discount of $20 per room and by tone of poor staffer who was forced to make phone call the $60 was coming out of her pay! do yourself a favour and buy the sydney herald and sleep in a bus shelter it will be far more pleasant than dealing with sydney,s version of Faulty Towers oriental style.

My husband, sister and I stayed at the Harbour Phoenix recently. We had read all the reviews and decided to give it a go anyway as the location is great. The apartment is fine, exactly what we expected. With a little TLC the place could be really good. The furniture is a little old and stained but the kitchen was clean enough with a dishwasher, full size fridge and microwave. Both bathrooms were a little grubby - they could have done with some bleach in the toilet and the grouting around the tiles was quite mouldy and there was a large 'tide mark' around the bath, the bathroom walls could have done with a wipe over. Nothing that couldn't be fixed with a bit some cleaning products and a little scrubbing! The carpet needed a good clean. The outdoor balcony was tiny and only had 2 chairs so we couldn't all sit out together. The beds were very comfortable and the sheets and towels were fresh and clean which was the top priority for us. We only intended to sleep here and use it as a base so overall we were satisfied.

My partner and I recently spent 3 nights at the Harbour Phoenix as part of a trip to Australia and I felt that i had to submit a review after reading the negative comments posted. My other half booked the appartments without looking at Trip Adviser and i'm glad he did as we probably would have looked elsewhere had we seen the reviews first. The thing to remember is that Sydney is a VERY expensive city, even more so with the pound weakening against the Australian dollar and hotels in good locations in Sydney are really expensive. We needed 2 bedrooms as my Mum was with us and this would have pushed the cost up further. We had decided that location was more important than luxury, when visiting a vibrant place like Sydney, your hotel is simply somewhere to sleep so it doesn't need to be the Ritz! Anyway, we booked a 2 bed apartment for 3 nights and got it for less than £500 which, when you look at hotel rates, is good value. The apartment block was easy to find (it's right opposite the Novotel on Murray St), and was just a couple of minutes away from Darling Harbour. The apartment does offer parking at an additional cost and it's a stacker system which may freak some people out but the car park is secure and we were more than happy to leave our little Polo GTi there! The apartment itself was really spacious with 2 bedrooms both with their own bathroom and shower. The main living/dining area had 2 sofas, a dining table and a decent telly and the kitchen had everything you'd need. There were also balconies off the living room and off both bedrooms (the balconies off the bedrooms are tiny and are blocked in but it's still fresh air and you can watch the Rainbow Lorikeets fly around the trees! In all fairness, we didn't spend a whole lot of time in the apartment, and beyond a cuppa and some breakfast we didn't eat there either. But, as i say, if you stay in a hotel in Sydney you probably wouldn't order room service would you!!!

The apartment was functional, clean and the staff at the reception (only available from 10am to 5pm) are really helpful. As we arrived on Valentines Day, my other half had arranged for a red rose to be waiting in our bedroom and it was all sorted out for him with no problem.

Location-wise, you couldn't ask for more. You're right in the hustle bustle of Darling Harbour in less than 5 minutes and the Monorail station is even closer which allows easy access into the main business district and towards the main tourist attractions of the Bridge and Opera House.

Those people who have complained about a lack of service, clearly didn't read the website correctly, It's a serviced apartment and not a hotel so you don't have maids running around afrer you and you really don't need to have any cleaning done if you're only staying for 3 days. You can arrange for the apartment to be serviced for around $30-40 depending on whether you need clean linen etc etc. You are asked to ensure that you take your own rubbish down to the bins in the garage area but it's hardly a massive chore. The lift takes you from the door of your apartment to the garage so there's no need to lug your bin bags for miles.

All in all, i'd say that those people who have complained about a lack of lobby or poor service, clearly don't understand the concept of serviced apartments. You're simply renting an apartment for a short length of time and no rental flats come with a maid service!!!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Harbour Phoenix and i certainly wouldn't even look for an alternative when visiting Sydney again (which i definitely will be doing)

Please, look beyond the lack of service and appreciate a clean and spacious apartment in an ideal location in one of the most exciting cities in the world.

If any one has any specific questions then please don't hesitate to contact me!

Room Tip: We stayed on the 4th floor - think it was apartment 8. From what i can gather, all apartments have b...
