This hotel is ideally located in the Rocks area and easy walking distance from the cruise terminal and train station at Circular Quay. Service was excellent and friendly. The rooms are nothing much, especially given the high price tag, but are certainly acceptable. There are undoubtedly better hotel deals in Sydney, but it would be hard to beat this hotel for convenience.

Room Tip: The hotel is happy to store your bags if you come early.

We booked this with a free night certificate for one-night, so I will not comment on price or value. We also traveled exclusively using public transportation, so I will not comment on ease of use with your own car.

GOOD
- The rooftop pool, hot tub, and tables!!! I knew they had a "nice" rooftop going into this, but it is difficult to say how incredible their view is until you are standing there looking over the bay, the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge. Wow! There is a tiny swimming pool, a decent hot tub, and then about 5 tables with chairs. One of our favorite experiences in our Australia trip was picking up a pitcher of Sangria and cups from the lobby bar (for only $20), as well as take-out from Wok On Inn right around the corner, and eating our dinner overlooking the city. This was the best view was the most tasty food/ drinks of our whole trip - all for less than $50, and we pretty much had it all to ourselves as there was no one up enjoying the view!
- Staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful.
- Hotel (which looks kind of like an Embassy Suites with HUGE atrium) and rooms were all clean.
- Free WIFI, newspaper, and early check-in (10:30AM) were provided as IHG Platinum Member. Supposedly we got an upgrade but we had a view of the alley, so I don't know what was special about it.
- Hot shower, comfortable bed, quiet room - the 3 most important things of any hotel in my opinion.
- Superb location in general right in the heart of the Rocks, 5-minute walk to the ferries/trains/buses/Opera House at Circular Quay.

BE AWARE
- No real concerns of note. The room is standard middle-of-the-road Holiday Inn...actually maybe a larger room than some of our others in Australia. Nothing fancy but definitely acceptable.

OVERALL
If we could get another great deal again, we would DEFINITELY stay here for the great location and eat every meal on the roof.

Visited Sydney as short stay visit for 5days prior to New Zealand, stayed at the Holiday inn on The Rocks. As far as location is concerned it could not be better for the Harbour Bridge and Opera House which are both a short walk ( 10 mins ). The hotel is a little tired and could do with a facelift the rooms are clean but again a bit dated, however the staff are excellent and could not be more helpful. It does have a pool on the roof which has excellent views of the Bridge,Harbour and Opera House but if there are more than 12 people up there it is very cramped. There are dining facilities in the hotel but we did not use them as there are many eateries around the hotel and more dining choices and better value for money.
We stayed in February and the weather was hot but not scorching, there are plenty of bars etc within walking distance as is the main ferry port to catch a ferry to Manley or elsewhere.
We would recommend that you take the Big Red tour bus which is a hop on hop off tour of Sydney city sights and allows you to visit many areas that you may not otherwise visit. We would have to say that although we have some criticism, it would not prevent us from staying here again as all issues were not major ones.

Room Tip: We cannot say whether it would be better in a higher room or not as it was quiet throughout the hote...

If you are coming or going on a cruise ship that is docking at Circular Quay then this is a fantastic location. I wheeled my bags here after one cruise and walked back to another cruise. So close! The hotel itself is a little tired but the location and the cleanliness made up for this. It's also smack bang in the oldest part of Sydney so you can't really expect new contemporary over location and history. I even did the free walking tour offered from the museum down the ally from the hotel. The market was just down the ally also and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes on the doorstep. It's super close to the ferry's and trains and we easily caught a ferry around to Darling Harbour and Manly. There is a pool and spa/jacuzzi rooftop that has brilliant views of Sydney, good for a photo op. I would stay here again when cruising.

The Holiday Inn on Geroge Street is in The Rocks area of old Sydney and is comparatively small compared to other skyscrapers around, only six floors.. On the inside it is trangular with rooms around the outside of an open centre. Quite unusual, and could be a bit daunting if you are on the top floor and have a problem with heights. There are only facilities for hot buffet breakfast so you will have to dine out in the evening. That's no problem - there are loads of eateries within short walking distance. From the roof you have good views of the bridge and the opera house, unless there is a large cruise ship docked in the circular quay!
There is a small rooftop pool but the jacuzzi is invariably way too hot!
We also found out that there is a nightclub over the road. Thumping bass is not good for sleeping! This is a vibrant area!
The service level was good. The star of the reception staff was Shannon. Nothing was too much trouble for her and she meant it when she said ‘the customer is always right.’ She did that little bit extra, and always with a smile.

Room Tip: Get a lower floor room if you have a problem with heights. It might be less noisy if your room does...

Dear HatmanBanstead,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We were pleased to read that you enjoyed the local area. Thank you for your kind words about Shannon, she is regularly mentioned in our guest reviews and certainly displays the qualities which we like to instil in our staff at the hotel.

Our atrium is certainly very unique and is a feature of our Heritage listed building.

The hotel does offer food service in the bar area in the evenings, however Playfair restaurant is only open for the breakfast period. With so many restaurants in the local area, we find that our customers like to explore the local eateries in the evening for dinner.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us, wishing you safe travels in 2014.

Kind regards,

I agree with others - this hotel is getting a little tired, but overall it's good - in a great location with the beautiful surroundings, bars, restaurants and interesting history. I enjoyed it - the staff are lovely, room is good, shower is excellent and bed/sleep is very comfortable. The location means the restaurants and bars are a little noisy, but only in the evenings, not through the night. It's pretty good. I'd come here again.
