“Great location”
Reviewed 13 July 2009

We stayed here for 4 nights as part of our honeymoon trip.

The hotel is all abouts its location. You are in possibly the best spot to sightsee in Sydney.

You are smack bang in the middle of the wonderful Rocks. The weekend market is literally out the front door.

As for the hotel, we paid and had the breakfast once, but there are cheaper places nearby. A bakery just down the road has a courtyard where you share your visit with wild parrots!

The rooms were fine, fairly standard, and the same as every other Holiday Inn I have ever been in. We changed room after 2 nights as we were on the 1st floor and it was noisy with deliveries early morning. The other room, on the back, overlooking the cobbled street and restaurants, was much better.

We paid for a taxi to and from the airport, which was £15 one way and £8 the other....either way it is the easiest mode of transport.

We found the Old Sydney Holiday Inn Hotel the ideal place for our family of ten. The rooms were comfortable, with all of the normal amenities. The breakfast, included in our room rate, was exceptional, eggs, pancakes, sausages, bacon, etc, in a very nice setting overlooking the lobby. The staff were tremendously helpful, and made reservations and suggestions for tours, which turned out to be excellent. They also arranged transfers for ten to the airport at a very reasonable price.
Location, Location - Said so many times, and so very true. We walked everywhere - to the bridge, to circular quay, the opera house, Botanic Gardens, restaurants. I saw no other hotel so well situated. The eighth floor roof top was a fantastic place to watch the light show, which was going on when we were there. The views of the Opera House are stunning.
This hotel made our introduction to Australia a perfect experience.

Peoples...if you are traveling in Australia, go to Last Minute Australia (lastminute.com.au). A friend of mine recommended the site, we were feeling gutsy, we chose the "secret/mystery hotel" and VOILA! $110AU later (the rooms go for $268+AU a night!), we got our room! Besides the deal, some of the rooms have incredible views of the Harbour, Opera House, and Bridge. It is a great find.

Picked for the location and wasn't disappointed. Booked direct via the Holiday Inn website and got a great deal of AUD$120 per night and it was worth every penny. Stayed for 3 nights (Friday thru Monday) and were lucky enough to not have a cruise ship at the terminal to block our view. Great photos taken from the rooftop at night.

Had great service from check in to check out. Staff gave easy directions and were happy to store bags for us on the last day.

Room was better than expected, super comfy bed, plenty of space and shower had awesome water pressure. We had room service on our last night and meal was great (and bigger than expected - glad we only ordered one dish between us!).

Close to the transport hub of Circular Quay - easy walking access to Ferries, trains and buses - all easy to use and get you everywhere you could possibly want to go!

Staff can give you directions to Pancakes on the Rocks 5 minutes away for 24hour pancakes (and everything else) – great for after a late finish at the Opera House.

Skip the tourist cruises and take the commuter ferries to Manly and between Circular Quay and Darling Harbour – great photo ops!

Stayed here in April for 6 nights over the Easter Period, great location and a good hotel.

Staff when checking in were very friendly, especially as I had just had to contendwith the Sydney rush hour traffic, and was lucky enough to get given a room on the top floor looking out to Sydney harbour bridge, which was pretty cool.

Staff also provided a good recommendation on were to eat that evening, without going too far. I was lucky enough to have breakfast included as part of my package, and the selection was good, and set you up for the day nicely.

Roof top swimming pool provides brilliant views, and during my first two nights had spent many hours up there, sadly over the Easter weekend, became crowded, but this was expected. Great social space to relax with friends with one of the most famous backdrops in the world.

One down side to my entire stay was that a Memory Card went missing from my bed after two days, admittedly they are small and could have easily been over looked, and this was a disappointment, as it had photos on from previous locations around the rest of Australia. Staff weren’t overly helpful and never got back to me when I requested that the bed lining for the day be checked.

However despite this, good hotel and would definitely consider staying here again.

‘OLD SYDNEY’ HOLIDAY INN
55 George St The Rocks
Paid
A$ 173 per night
On a stay 4 pay 3 Deal

HMMMM!

This hotel was formed about 1980 and although still seemingly acceptable as we walked across the huge Atrium Lobby to check in but it seemed weary. As we checked in we were persuaded be the receptionist to upgrade at a cost of A$ 25 per night on the basis of a larger room and bed. It was on the 5th Floor at the front.

The room was large and had a view of the historic buildings across the street and with a minute peep of the bay above. The wardrobe space was adequate and the bathroom, although dated, was OK.

This is in a very lively area called ‘The Rocks” with restaurants, bars and shops. It is a mere cock-stride to Circular Quay and it’s lively atmosphere. Ferries go fro here to all Sydney’s famous places. We went to Darling Harbour on the Saturday and there was a Jazz Festival in progress. This is a great city with plenty of things to do.

When we woke after our second night my wife found and killed a huge 5mm long Bed Bug, which was strolling across her pillow! We reported it to the duty manager Kimberley, who was most apologetic and asked us to move to another room on 6th Floor with a good view of the Bridge, opera house and Circular Quay. She removed the upgrade charges and gave us a free breakfast.

The lifts created a lot of congestion due to one of the two being replaced. There was excessive traffic noise from George St well into the early hours.

This hotel, if it had been bug-free, would have been acceptable but there are better situated ones at about the same price, such as the brand new ‘SEBEL PIER ONE’ on the actual waterfront past the famous bridge. Next time we visit we will stay there.

I could not recommend this hotel.

Check in was quick and efficient. After arriving in our room, we were shocked to find a used tube of KY jelly and a small bottle of some unknown lotion still sitting on the bedside table! We reported this to front desk who seemed genuinely shocked. We were offered another room however we had already unpacked. A bowl of fruit (not fresh) was offered as an apology and offending items removed. Room was adequate however bathroom was very small and old, dated. Mould around taps etc. This hotel is 8 floors however one elevator was out of service leaving only one other to service all 8 floors on one side of the building. This remaining elevator then malfunctioned in the evening leaving us the choice of either climbing 7 floors to our room or taking the service elevator. We chose the latter. Awoken at 5.30am by the sound of water running down pipes in the walls presumably by someone having a long shower in the room above us on the 8th floor. Breakfast was actually of a reasonable quality. Overall, this hotel has seen better days and is now in need of a major refurbishment. The hallways are dark and dingy however the staff were very helpful. You can find better value for money hotels in Sydney if you do your research. The only thing going for this hotel is its location in The Rocks part of Sydney. If you do happen to stay on the weekend also check out the great weekend markets that are literally on outside!

Dear Nikki,

I would like to offer a most sincere apology for the discomfort you must have experienced. We pride ourselves on our hotel’s service and cleanliness. Thus I was also extremely shocked to hear of this occurrence. Your comments about our bathrooms are valid. I am happy to advise that we will be undertaking a bathroom refurbishment project which will be completed by the end of 2009. I apologise also for the inconvenience you experienced with the elevators. We are currently completing a much needed upgrade of our elevators which will also be complete before the close of the year. I’m pleased you enjoyed your breakfast and that you found our staff helpful and accommodating.

Kind regards,
Leanne Graham
