“ALTITUDE RESTAURANT -TOPS FOR FOOD--TOPS FOR OUTLOOK”
Reviewed 29 December 2013

The Altitude Restaurant on the 36th floor of the Shangri-La Hotel The Rocks Sydney. Tops for outlook , food and wine.We were there on Xmas Eve. Yes it was fully booked. We had the nine course set menu..starting with a glass of "Verve " on arrival. We then selected a french Semillon with a little age to accompany the entrees. Our red wine was decantered and allowed to breath as you would expect with a 2001Coonawarra served with a absolutely wonderful Wagu fillet. Want more ? Well the view thru floor to ceiling glass was breathtaking.Yes there is the Harbour bridge, you can almost touch.Glance right and overlook Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera house . Want more ? Those at our table who had backs to view just looked up and there was a wall of mirrors reflecting the view.

Stayed here in 2012 and it was wonderful, (see my review), so I was very much looking forward to another visit. And the views are still amazing from the higher floors, and the location is still perfect, but…the little touches were missing this time.

The Room:
we booked a Premier Grand Harbour View Room for the 270' views. Which it had, but 90 of those degrees looked straight onto the next door hotel, so not as fabulous as expected. We just kept the curtains drawn on that side, rather defeating the object! I actually much preferred the Grand Harbour View which is much cheaper. (that room is also a bit smaller, but this didn't bother us). Also, be aware that in summer in the middle of the day these rooms can COOK. They get heaps of sun, more than the AC could cope with. To solve that, close the curtains but…hey you booked this room for the amazing view, right?

The Pool:
The pool is highly chlorinated, indoor and heated. There are not very many sunbeds around the edge. It has a view onto the toll booths of the freeway. This was ok in winter, but in summer, full of dive bombing kids it was horrible. The outdoor pool we could see at the Four Seasons next door looked much more inviting and relaxing. If pools are your thing, this is not the place for you.

The outdoors:
In winter, not an issue, but in summer it's great to have an outdoor area within the hotel that can be used to chill out without actually going out. The Shangri-la only has a handkerchief size area next to the indoor pool, situated directly next to the flyover of the highway; very noisy. Not great.

The 360' Bar:
is always well worth a visit if only for the view from the 36th floor. Last time we visited the service was impeccable, the staff bringing free bowls of rice crackers etc for guests. This time the staff were very slow, not particularly friendly and had no idea what we were takling about when we asked about the snacks, just showed us the bar meals menu. When cocktails are $21 you can give your guests 20c worth of rice crackers I think.

Room Service: very expensive of course, but great quality food served with aplomb. But if I particularly ask you how long it will be, don't say 15 minutes and take 45. Tell me 45!

Summary:
This is a great place for a low season, get away visit. In high summer, I would look elsewhere.
Don't waste money on the 270' view, spend it instead on a Horizon level room to ensure you actually get a great view. Get breakfast in bed, it's big enough for 2 and it's such a treat.

Room Tip: To ensure you get a good view, choose the horizon level. A grand harbour view room is fine, don'...

We will never forget the moment we walked into our room on the 29th floor. We had two huge windows with the most amazing views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House! These rooms cost approx £250 a night which although a lot of money is an absolute bargain compared to London prices! Breakfast was delicious with tasty cooked omelettes and scrummy croissants. This hotel is in a great position. Colin the concierge is great and will help you with anything you need. Johnny also gave us great advice. Just down the road from the hotel is a lively pub called the Australian hotel which serves yummy pizzas and salads and really good beer. Just further on down the street is the entrance to the Bridge climb. Next door to the hotel the other way is another 'pub' called the Harts pub which also serves very good food. Circular Quay is only about 5 mins walk from the hotel. Stay at this hotel if you can!

Room Tip: Choose the executive harbour view room if you can. You won't regret it!

On my previous visits to Sydney, I always admired the Shangri-La for its prime location in The Rocks and for the hotel group's world class reputation. Therefore on my most recent trip I was overjoyed to have the thrill of staying and not just in any room but in the Royal Suite. Yep, you read that right - the Royal Suite. Hell yeah!! My brother and now sister-in-law were booked in for the weekend of their wedding and due to a slight error with the booking which could put you off, they upgraded their room to the Royal Suite - normally reserved for Presidents; Royalty; actors and musicians - and said it was their wedding gift to them. Good customer service so a plus point for that! Also when we left the hotel for the Church the Front of House staff presented our Flowergirl and Page boy, who were 6 and 2 years old respectively, with a koala toy which I thought was a nice touch.

Obviously the Royal Suite was truly magnificient - beautiful, plush and bigger than my entire London apartment! - and as it's located the floor below the Altitude bar, the views overlooking the entire Harbour are truly breathtaking. The night before the wedding, when I was too nervous / excited to do such a silly thing as sleep and I couldn't take my eyes off the stunning view, there was a massive thunderstorm / lightning storm and it actually lit up the Harbour and was amazing to witness.

On the morning of the wedding, my brother and I had breakfast at the hotel which was very nice with good service, although be warned they frown upon you wearing the complimentary slippers. Another nice touch for us girls getting ready in the Royal Suite was complimentary champagne and fruit, even though they were busy with lots of VIP's that weekend too, some of whom I spied on check out.

I'd also visited the Altitude bar - right at the top of the hotel - on two separate occasions, once on a Monday night and it was busy for the whole time we there and it took us ages to get a 'front row' window seat - I can see why as you just don't want to leave the view!! The other visit was the night before the wedding, so a Friday night which was understandably packed with no hope of a window seat or view and as there were a view of us we sat in a separate area. The bar staff knew their stuff, were friendly and the cocktails were magnificient - highly recommend the Espresso Martini - and priced as you would expect for a top hotel bar in a major City and because they know everyone comes for the view.

Top notch Shangri, I hope I will be lucky enough to visit again soon!

If you are visiting Sydney for holiday, the hotel is optimally located in the Rocks area. It is a stones throw from the opera house, harbour bridge and ferry terminals and a 10 minute walk to the shopping district. If staying on business, a hotel near Darling Harbour may be better.
We were upgraded and our room was huge. It did have a harbour view, though this was out of a smaller corner window so not as impressive as we anticipated but the size of room and facilities made up for this.
The hotel was low key and in no way pretentious for a 5 star hotel. Staff were nice and efficient, although we did get people knocking on our door multiple time to clean or check tvs, which was unnecessary.
Overall we are pleased that we chose this hotel and friends in city confirmed this was best choice for tourists.

a 2 star hotel posing as a 5 star hotel. If you want a lower standard hotel, why pay to be ignored, mistreated, and abused for your holiday stay. Sydney is a beautiful city filled with wonderful, energetic, kindly people who make up for all the shortcomings of a hotel that is considered to be above average. I loved every moment in time while visiting Australia. With a smile from ear to ear, each day brought more than expected and I felt very blessed to be visiting such a great country.
What happened Shangri La?? I am not pleased to write this review. I will return to Sydney, but would prefer to find the spirit of this wonderful land within the place I call "home" at night.. There is no doubt about it, the PEOPLE make a lasting impression, not the soft pillow.

Room Tip: try another hotel..

I have stayed in other Shangri La properties and was thrilled with Sydney. Excellent location 2min walk from Circular Quay in the Rocks, Despite being busy at Christmas the staff were genuine and friendly.
