“Two Night Bliss”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2014

From the time we drove up to the Hotel entrance to the time we left two nights later, we were very impressed. Our room was very large, with the promised views of the Opera House and Circular Quay. We were out'n'about for our time there, and didn't try any of the facilities offered by the hotel, but the small interactions with staff were very pleasant.
The Hotel was 100% full according to one staff member, and while the lobby area was always full, it didn't feel crowded or hurried.

Firstly, there was a huge Mainland Chinese Group (about 100 people who stayed for 10 days!). They talk extremely loudly in the hotel and inside the lifts. Since they were hosting a meeting in the hotel, during our whole stay, we had to endure the noise and also have to wait for elevators, restaurant, everything!

The hotel only operates half of the elevators even at Peak hours, so there are few occasions where we had to wait for 10 minutes for a lift. At 5pm, unluckily, many guests are going up to the Bar for a sunset drink, and we unfortunately ran into the Group finishing their meeting, so there were many people pushing and forcing themselves into the lift. After stopping at every other floor, and a 10 min. lift ride later, we were all sweating!

Every day, we had to wait in a long line to be seated for breakfast. There can be up to 22 adults and children in line! The breakfast area is also very crowded, staff were very friendly though.

Despite the rooms supposedly being renovated in the last 2 years, there are problems in the bathroom with water dripping and terrible water pressure!

Don’t think the hotel floors are checked and cleaned frequently as we saw the food tray (from room service) next door was still left on the floor from 10pm till the next morning when we went out.

Suggestion, stay in Four Seasons hotel in front (which is also more accessible).

Room Tip: Deluxe Grand Harbour View room has best view. Opera House City View Room does not face the Opera Hou...

It was my birthday and the staff went the extra mile. We stayed in the most beautiful suite overlooking the harbor and it was definitely my best birthday. Roses and two special cakes waited for us for each day that we were there that were top quality and personalized. Couldn't recommend this enough for a little special treat. Thank you for a first class experience. The buffet was exceptional but just a bit pricey, but you do get anything you can dream of.

Just wrote a review of my stay in Melbourne at the HIlton South Wharf hotel.
After one night in Melbourne I moved to Sidney where I stayed at the Shangri-La Hotel.

Another very good hotel. I never stayed at a Shangri-La before and my travel agent was right, it is an excellent Hotel. Situated close the Sidney Harbour and the Opera house, it makes it a convenient place. There are plenty of restaurants and places to spend the evenings without getting bored. I can think of this hotel once more for my next trip to Sidney.

Rooms, staff, service all what you would expect from a hotel of this standard/price but, dear me, it is SO let down by what I can only describe as the bunfight at peak times at breakfast. The restaurant is simply too small to cope with the large number of mostly holiday, coach-party guests. The arrangements to seat people are slow and easily overwhelmed resulting in long queues. This is an important meal, the start to the day -- if you are staying there on business (as I was) you really don't need this experience, exacerbated by the somewhat strident tones of the staff-member on the reception desk. The Shangri-La management need to grip this problem as a matter of urgency.

Everything about this hotel is excellent. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful.

My room was spacious, clean with a top quality bathroom and shower (My yard-stick of a good hotel). The location is excellent, a 5 minute walk took me down to the Harbour, directly opposite the Opera house, to the tourist ferry port. In this area is lots of vibrant coffee shops, cafes (just incase you fancy a breakfast away from the hotel) and bars.

My only criticism is the lack of lifts to take you to your room. There are 6 lifts, serving 35 floors. Trying to get a lift between 5-6pm was painful, never have i queued 20 minutes for a lift in a hotel before, there isn't a staircase serving the floors so you've got no option but to wait, painful.

In all, a lovely hotel and definitely worth a stay.
