“First-class all the way”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

Shangri-La is generally very reliably high-quality throughout Asia and Sydney was certainly up to their usual standard. The brand is somewhat unusual in that the hotels generally work well for both business and vacation travel (many competitors are much better for one or the other), again the Sydney Shangri-La lived up to this as well. Great location (near the Rocks, harbor/ferry quay and major shopping streets), very pleasant and helpful staff and nice rooms. Decent restaurant variety in-hotel with plenty of options in close walking distance as well. It also has a lot of the little conveniences that can make a trip easier and more enjoyable (like outlets that match most international plugs without adapters, fast free wireless internet access, etc.). All in all a great stay!

This hotel has a lot going for it. There is the excellent location, the great harborview rooms, the size and comfort of the accommodations, the fantastic Blu/Altitude bar on the top floor, and several staff members (one a mere German trainee) who present as consummate hospitality professionals etc.

On the downside, it feels very dated, the service is decidedly uneven and the quality of the breakfast is rather mediocre (they constantly ran out of items every morning and were slow to replenish them). When at breakfast it also took forever to get a coffee and then the waitress cleared the entire table when we went up for second helpings with it being a production to get new cutlery set. I suspect this is a matter of hiring very green immigrant personnel not used to the service industry. The spa also feels rather shopworn.

On a more significant note, the room was nice and we appreciated the universal power outlets and comfortable king bed. But the bathroom had a persistent musty smell which appeared to be coming from the drains. The hotel was nice about it and sent up champagne and chocolates. They also put some substance down the drains which made them then smell of chemicals but, overall, it was hard to mask the odor.

The personnel at the Amex platinum check in desk were beyond gracious and pleasant, but this does not mitigate the fact that one does not except the foregoing kind of issues in an allegedly five star property with a brand standard to maintain. Have stayed at the other major Sydney CBD hotels and this, regrettably, would have to rank in a lower quartile of the list.

Room Tip: Book harbor view room on high floor.

Dear Peter R,

Thank you for your review and helpful feedback on our property. We are pleased to hear overall you enjoyed your stay with us. We assure you our staff all receive the same training and any variations in service may simply be from a busy operation or a different approach to guest hospitality. We're sorry to hear about the smell you mentioned in your room's drain, we are currently looking further into this.

We hope you will visit again soon and provide us with the opportunity to regain your confidence in our property.

Thank you

Stayed there for 3 nites recently. As we arrived early and the rooms were not ready, we headed straight for breakfast which was nice. Got our rooms after that, earlier than normal check in times which I felt was a plus point.

My room was comfortable and spacious enough. Clean with all the minimum requirement ticked off nicely. View was also nice as I was on a high floor.

The negatives - breakfast quickly got old as it was the same menu with not even a little variation at all. Would have preferred if they change parts of the menu daily. In the first place, whilst nice, the variety is not that extensive.

Secondly, when checking out, I had to wait a good 25 minutes and three phone calls before someone came to take my bag down. That was most irritating and time wasting.

Overall ok for a short stay

Stayed at the hotel for four nights in early April.
We arrived at seven o'clock in the morning and our room was already ready, and we were upgraded to a corner suite for my husband's birthday.
Very nice and service minded.
The suite was very nicely decorated, spacious rooms and a large bathroom with everything you can imagine. Nice beds. We lived on the 33rd floor and had views on three sides, including the Sydney Bridge and the Opera House.
We ate at the restaurant located at the top of the hotel in the evening and the food was exceptionally good and the service as well.
This hotel lived up to our high expectations and we can heartily recommend it.

Our experience at the Shangri-la was very good, helpful and friendly staff, especially the conciege when booking a hire car and arranging our day out.
Our room was spacious with bath and seperate shower. We were on the 26th floor with an opera house city view, more city than opera house, I would have liked a bridge and opera house view, but sadly it all comes at a price. The In Room Dining was excellant and the club sandwiches were amongst some of the best we have had especially the lobster club, it arrived quickly and hot, well done. The breakfast choice was good and varied and the freashly prepared specials were very good.
This is a good all round 5 star hotel with no real complaints but it doesn't quite have the wow!

I had heard great things from colleagues about this hotel & even travelled with someone whom had visited the hotel some 12 months ago & even he thought things had changed for the worse. Simply a bitter disappointment. Slow & very much more like a 3 star hotel. Much better service & experience at other Sydney hotels.

We stayed for four nights in May 2014. It is very large but also very comfortable. The view from Blu or Altitude on 36th floor must be one of the best in the world and guess what? It is not a rip off. Staff friendly and helpful. Location great. We booked through Trailfinders in the UK 4 nights for the price of 3. We were very satisfied. Our room was large and in good condition. On the 18th floor it overlooked circular quays and the Sydney Opera House. In addition I'd say breakfast was very extensive in the range of choice, the spa was not huge, not small but very calming. The Altitude Restaurant was quite daring and interesting, and I felt reasonably priced considering where it is and the view. The hotel is buzzing and at the same time when you retire to your room it is peaceful. We recommend it.

Room Tip: We were on the 18th with view of Opera House - was very good to wake up to that each day.
