“Shangri-la hotel stylish with a capital S”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014

Just returned from a 2 day conference held at the Shangri-La Sydney and must say that my stay was very impressive. The staff and service was top notch and I came away feeling good about my experience.

The only downside is the location. I had to walk up a terribly steep hill to get there from Circular Quay so next time would definitely catch a taxi the short distance.

We stayed at this hotel on our first visit to Australia and Sydney and if it is your first trip my room tip is to go for the view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge it's worth it just for the room view when you open the blinds on the first morning.

The rooms are nice and a good size but not spectacular.

The bar on top of the hotel also gives excellent views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House for an evening cocktail or drink with Sydney lit up.

The only downside if you have mobility issues is if you want to walk round near to the hotel there is a hill to negotiate and it isn't the best situated of hotels for all the attractions of Sydney.

The hotel is close to the Rocks and if you are doing the bridge climb it is just a 5 minute walk down the street.

Breakfast was buffet style and was ok but not the as good as other Shangri La hotels around Australia and Asia.

The staff are excellent and very professional and we couldn't fault any of them.

We arrived early on the Sunday morning from our flight from the UK so knowing that check in wasn't until later we were pleasantly surprised when they said they would get our room ready as soon as possible and they then text me about an hour later to tell me that our room was ready and we were able to check in early at no cost.

Room Tip: Go for the Opera House and Harbour Bridge Views

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and the experience was amazing. Concierge was helpful, reception efficient and staff generally delivering the level of service you expect from a 5 star hotel (but sometimes dont get!). We had dessert at the altitude restaurant on the 36th floor and it was an extremely memorable experience. If we visit Sydney again we would definitely stay here as our hotel of choice.

Room is quite average for a Shangrila hotel. Good thing is the rooms are renovated but the breakfast was very average. Probably will stay closer to the city centre or near Darling Harbour next time rather than up the Rocks.

This was my 1st stay at this hotel after hearing raving reviews and it lived up to the hype. I had a corner room with a spectacular view. Breakfast was lovely each morning with a great selection available. I attended a conference held on site and the staff attending to us during the conference were polite and courteous at all times. I have no hesitation at going back and staying at this hotel again.

Stayed in a room with a view over the Harbour and the Opera House. It was absolutely stunning.
My husband got a bit spun out by the low glass windows as he doesn't had a good head for heights.
Location brilliant. Would recommend Pancakes on the Rocks if you're staying in the area. www.pancakesontherocks.com.au/ or the German bar/cafe Lowenbrau.

I was extremely looking forward to checking in at Shangri La. as soon as I walked into the room nothing stood out to me it was just a typical room . The bathroom & fittings were lovely although the bath tub was a little on the smallish side. The view in the park side room was merely an outdoor view with just roads to the side & very bland would definitely not stay in this room again. The hotel lifts are insanely slow & this was commented on by other guests staying in the hotel. Expect to wait "5 minutes" for one to arrive & they are heavily dense. The breakfast was very nice but for $42.00 per person. The swimmimg pool was a major let down. The hours are only until 9.00 pm the water could have been warmer & the ladies change rooms are very far from the pool. A major let down as if honestly looked amazing on the photos but very average in deed not what you would expect from a hotel chain of this size. The staff are friendly & accommodating. Unfortunately , overall experience nothing will tempt me to go back
