We stayed one night at The Establishment Hotel and absolutely loved it. From the moment we stepped into the quiet lane and discovered the huge wooden entrance door to the hotel we knew it would be special. The lobby has distinct mood lighting and a tranquility that immediately provided relief from the Sydney hustle and bustle. The staff were courteous and friendly and check-in took no more than 2 minutes. When we walked in the room jazz music started playing and it immediately set the scene. I thought the room decor was superb, the lighting was serene and I would recommend this hotel without hesitation. In a city with hundreds of hotels, The Establishment has managed to stand out due to it's understated luxury chic appeal and by adding small touches to what is, at the end of the day, just a room. These things create an ambiance and set a mood that are well worth the price.

I came across this hotel on the internet as I was battling to find a well located, reasonably priced, quality small/boutique hotel at short notice during a period when accomodation in Sydney was very tight and overpriced.Although a frequent visitor I had not heard of it before. Its hard to find in a tiny lane way but in a great location. Its very discete and linked to numerous bars and restaurants located in the attached up market Establishment restaurant and bar complex. The rooms are great, extremely well fitted out with modern fittings and furnishings. As a travel centurion I could not fault it and will return for sure and very happily.Only complaint was late noise from the bar downstairs and early morning rubbish collection.Minor negatives that were easily overwhelmed by the positives over my three day.The world would be more fun if all hotels were this satisfying.

This is a seriously great place!
1. Location - between the main shopping area and Circular Quay.
2. Service - this place could so easily be pretentious, but it's not, with attentive service and staff who went out of their way to help.
3. Food - we breakfast, lunch and dinner in this complex and it was yummy and good value, even the cookies left on the bed for the turndown service were just right.
4. The room - stylish, large, great sound system with a spot for your ipod, fantastic toiletries, and best of all - a normal hairdryer and not one of those stupid useless things attached to wall!! A can of ironing spray was even in the room - everything has been thought of!
The only downside was the noise from the club downstairs - apparently there was a new DJ who was yet to receive the memo re sound levels. It didn't bother us, but it could bother a light sleeper.

What a disappointment. At first glance, the room seemed attractive - if you like that hard edged, modern look. However, it was so difficult to use and be in. First challenge was working out how to turn off the annoying music emanating from the bed head (first call to reception). After that followed trying to find the power point in the bathroom and working out how to use the lights (icons had worn off all the buttons). Tap was ridiculously difficult to use and the basin was far too deep and low. No towel rail. Eventually found the kettle, hidden in a cupboard nowhere near the fridge or the counter where it needed to be plugged in. No side tables near the bed - only a very high bed head behind it which meant you had to stretch up and turn around to put tea, water, glasses etc high up behind you and not at all within reach. Floor had a deep step running across its whole width - I spent the entire time worrying I'd fall down it. Not enough surface space to sit and work. A rug made out of a skinned animal - yuck. Chain on blind broke when I drew it down to block out the view from the windows of the building opposite - only a few feet away. Having given up and gone to bed to read, the ridiculous lamps perched on the high bed head didn't cast enough light to see the pages properly (even when turned up high). When I gave up on that and decided to turn in, I couldn't work out how to extinguish all the lights in the room (second call to reception who explained that I needed to use the touch screen controls on the telephone - why didn't I think of that?). The rest of the night was spent tossing and turning, being woken up every single time another load of empties was crashed into the skip in the alley alongside the hotel. I left the next morning feeling stressed and irritated and will never go there again. Have stayed in far nicer rooms for half the price. Shop around, travellers, this one ain't all it's cracked up to be!

If you visit Sydney Stay here, great location, rooms, staff, bar restaurants. Dont forget to visit the pony for dinner one night on the rock, recommended by reception, who made our reservations for us.
Our biggest mistake was not staying here for our whole visit as we thought it would be too expensive, but they do good midweek deals we didnt realise. Dont even look at vibe hotel however good the pool looks and cheap rates!!

This place is actually quite awesome. Hotel staff is fantastic, and the design/cleanliness/overall experience of the accommodations are over the top. The front desk, as well as Luke, the hotel manager was always around to suggest something fun to do. We had limited time at the Establishment Hotel, but it was a great stay. You have to be a bit careful (not for your safety) when staying in CBD Sydney. You'll get what you are looking for. If you want to chill and relax, you can find it but it will take some digging. If you want to go out for a nice dinner, prepare for a showoff fest of slightly over pretentious yuppies. If you like the crowd in trendy spots, Establishment and the surrounding Merivale group bars/restuarants is for you. We had a good time there, as sometimes we enjoy dressing up and hitting the "super cool" hot spots in a big city.
