The location was perfect for our needs - close to George St and into the CBD, right next to Museum station, and a short walk to Darling Harbour. However, the hotel itself is very run down. For the price we paid for a room we didn't expect to see paint chipping, the curtain rod coming away from the wall, the balcony door wouldn't lock, the windows aren't double glazed so you hear traffic noises all night, there was a hole in the ceiling, and a down-light was hanging out of the ceiling in the bathroom with the wires exposed. Staying in a backpackers would have been half the price and we would have had similar room experience. That being said, the staff were helpful - especially Penelope who greeted us and was very friendly and welcoming. When we raised the issue of the room, we were given a new room but it was much smaller - again not really happy considering what we paid. They seem to be doing renovations so hopefully the standard of the hotel will improve as the renovations are completed. Overall I would say it was OK - not fantastic but not horrible.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for providing the feedback on your recent stay.

I have passed on your compliments to Penny whom has been fantastic at the front desk and have received praises from guest on several occasions.

I do understand and acknowledge that some part of the hotels require facelift, good news is that we have begun our refurbishment work.

The current refurbishment schedule will include replacing our guest lifts, replacing service lifts, refurbishment of our foyer and soft refurbishment to our pool and spa area.

The refurbishment will be carried with minimal disturbance to our guest and other tentants alike.

Hopefully we will be able to complete the work mid next year.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and look forward to welcome you back in near future.

Regards
Manjil

We travelled from Cairns to Sydney for a little weekend getaway. When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted by Penelope. We were so exhausted from travelling, however Penelope was so friendly and welcoming that we felt completely relaxed and made to feel right at home.

Our room was wonderful. It had a full kitchen so we could cook breakfast and lunch, then make reservations for dinner. The room had a view over the park which was so pretty in the morning.

The only disappointment throughout the trip was that the hallways looked quite tired and there was only one lift working. When we complained to reception they let us know they bringing in brand new elevators and in the process of refurbishing the whole place.

We sure enjoyed our stay, the service especially from Penelope was exceptional. We can't wait to see more changes to the building. So far the room was lovely.

Best regards,

The Happy Camper

They are replacing the lifts, part, one suspects, of a make-over for this tired hotel. While the location was excellent and the bed was comfortable, most other things here were unexciting. Paintwork is chipped and tired, the bathroom light is positioned so one stands between the mirror and the light so seeing to shave is very difficult, towels are frayed. No doubt it will get better but at the moment it wouldn't be my choice.

This hotel is perfectly located for everything. Darling harbour is extremely close and circular quay is a pleasant walk away. The added advantage is that being on the edge of hyde park it is not as noisy as maybe some of the hotels could be closer to the quay.
Being at this hotel we were able to spend most of the time exploring by foot which made it a great experience.
Arriving at the hotel I wasn't massively impressed, the staff were extremely friendly, however the hotel itself seemed a bit weathered. Taking the lift and passing through the corridors it seemed that there were a few long term guests and there was a smell of cigarettes and damp. Nothing massivley off-putting and a contrast to what awaited us in the room.
The room itself was amazing. It was very clean, spacious and with a small kitchen. It had everything you need to prepare basic meals.
When I say be selective with the rooms, I mean try and opt for a slightly bigger room with a view of hyde park. This was great. One night feeling a bit tired we sat back in the room with a bottle of wine, sushi and enjoyed the view out of our window - I think this was a lot more romantic than a lot of restaurants and a lot cheaper!
The roof top pool is also a and added bonus and perfect for an early morning or late afternoon swim after returning from the beach.
Overall a great stay with my wife.

The room we stayed in was newly renovated, quite spacious and very nice. Unfortunately we had a view of a neighboring roof top covered in human feces so we just kept the curtain closed. Also one of the elevators was missing a roof we assumed was due to the renovation process The hotel it's self is in a very good, the staff were nice and it is in a great location.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room

We stayed in the 4.5 studio apartment, the room was newly renovated and tidy. Unfortunately the floor smells like smoke and the air- con and fridge were faulty, even after reporting the fault little was done to recitify this. The location is great, right on the corner of Hyde park. Walking distance to most things or the train line. Most of the hotel is under going renovations, the room was complete but the common areas are not. It's an old hotel, well overdue for the work!!!

Room Tip: At least the 4.5 studio app

Dear Guest,
Thank you for posting the review.

I for one totally agree with you and yes the common areas require urgent face lift.

The good news is we have begun the refurbishment in the common areas, including our guest lifts.

The refurbishment are carried out in bits and pieces to ensure minimal disturbance to all our guests.

The Hotel ensures that the noise level ( if any) are kept to minimal and are done during most of the rooms are empty and not occupied.

Hopefully we will be able to complete the rennovation by the year end.

I am delighted you lilked the rennovated rooms - this is typical to all Oaks rooms and we are in process to convert all our old rooms to this standard and of our taste that will cater to modern travellers.

Once again, thank you for you feedback and look forward to welcome you back at Oaks Hyde Park Plaza.

This hotel is so convenient for everything we want to do that we stayed here again, for the third time. It's certainly not the poshest hotel in Sydney but we think it takes a lot of beating. The rooms have a kitchen and dining area aswell as a settee, so it is all very comfortable and reasonably roomy. We always ask for a park-view room because we love the view over the park with all the goings-on, although we have never been disturbed by the noise of the traffic.
It is a 15 - 20 minute walk from central station and, if you enjoy walking, it is lovely to walk through Hyde Park, across The Domain to the Botanic Gardens and on to the Opera House and Circular Quay.
We will certainly stay here again on our next trip to Sydney.
