“Could Be a Very Good Hotel if Updates Were Made”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 October 2009

The concept of an apartment hotel in an excellent location with a full kitchen and laundry facilities in the room with a competitive price was appealing to us when we booked the hotel. It was a disappointment to find that the rooms along with some of the facilities were in need of repair and updating. Maybe it's this time of economic upheaval but in the hotel's current condition this would rate as a low 3-star hotel in Europe and the U.S.

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment for 5 nights recently. The apartment itself was well laid out and spacious. While the apartment was on the tired side, it appeared clean. There was a note left by management that couches and TV's were in the process of being replaced. However, we found the carpet very worn with many ripples (see pic), the bed uncomfortable, and the dishwasher didn't seem to work and left big puddles of water when we opened it. How expensive can it be to clean the carpets and have them stretched back?

When we tried to use the "gym" we found most of the equipment to be in disrepair. The treadmill (see pic) appeared to have been broken for months with a significant amount of dust on the machine. The pool however, seemed to be in good working order and well maintained.

If the hotel's management updated the rooms and some of the facilities this would be an outstanding place to stay. We also stayed at the Medina Grand in Melbourne and it was a totally different experience. It was a very good hotel with the rooms and facilities in excellent order. Apparently the Medina name does not necessarily stand for consistent quality across the chain.

One half of our group arrived a couple of days earlier than the second half of the group.

On arrival the check in staff appeared to be very efficient, attentive and used initiative, suggesting he should enable our room key cards access to the different floors on which our entire group would be staying. Unfortunately we had to return to reception numerous times throughout our stay, as access to the different levels and even access to our rooms was never consistent.

There appears to be a huge lack communication between staff. Our freezer wasn't working on arrival, which was essential in order to provide ice cubes to cool our baby milk. I called down to reception twice before they finally came to fix it. 2 days later, a porter came to the room to ask 'if our freezer was working yet?'

The television in our 'living room' would not even turn on, and we only had the 'old' remote control. A member of staff came to the room and said 'i don't know how to work these things either' and promised to pass the message onto the day staff. The next night we called reception again enquiring after a working television, having been out all day, and another member of staff arrived to announce 'these tvs are new, we haven't been trained'

Our 'pedal bin' in the bathroom had a broken pedal, which normally wouldn't be in issue however, we have a small baby, and hence had to throw away alot of nappies, and found it inconvenient and unhygienic to have to keep lifting the lid of the bin by hand. (it was a very small bin, so also hard to reach esp when holding a baby!) On reporting this to reception, they promptly asked housekeeping to remove the bin, and a porter returned some hours later to replace it...with a light bulb?? (I still don't understand the logic behind that?) We never did get a replacement, and had to make do with a carrier bag we put out ourselves each day.

We also had to be very careful with what was left out on the kitchenette top, as our microwavable steriliser bag for baby bottles, which were clearly labelled (by Lindam) was thrown away by housekeeping. Luckily our last bag was safely left in our suitcase!

The room itself was spacious enough, however the decor was very 'tired' looking. Faux fur seats were worn right down to the lining, sofas almost threadbare. The only new thing, the tv, wasn't even functional.

The location was very useful, a stones throw away from Darling Park monorail should u need to use it, and just a few blocks from chinatown, which is an easy walk even with a baby. It is also right next to the harbour, and the aquarium.

They advertise 'a fitness gym, sauna and heated pool'. The fitness gym comprises of very dated one exercise bike, cross trainer and some free weights. The pool is slightly heated, barely noticeable, and cleanliness is questionable. (leaves in the pool and the water was salty) The sauna barely heated up at all. Again access was variable, as was exiting!

Liked best: Location
Liked least: Poor service and decor. In need of serious training and updating.

Would recommend only if location was paramount.

After reading other reviews on TA we thought this would be an adequate choice for a few days stay in Sydney.

As noted in other reviews its not on the Habourside but as long as you aware of it its not an unpleasant surprise.

Its also right next to the Motorway, so make sure you don't get a room on the city side. Though the hotel has thoughtfully installed double sets of double glazing -you certainly need it.

When we checked in the very pleasant receptionist recommended we upgrade for a nominal cost. We are glad we did. It was closer to the habour side and had more room and extra amenities like a washer and dryer which were handy.

The room was well equipped. Though the TV in bed room was at a ridiculous viewing angle because of the configuration of the room - just as well we didn't want to watch TV in bed. Plenty of space in the room, with lots of natural light. Cleaned well each day to considering the size of the room.

It was a short walk to darling harbour or the city.

All the staff were very helpful which helped to make the stay enjoyable.

didn't try the restaurant.

put hand in pool but didn't seem too heated

We were amazed when we walked into this apartment. We had got it at a good rate so didn't expect too much but it was excellent. The bed was huge! The bathroom was lovely (and has a cupboard which houses a washing machine and tumble dryer). The kitchen has a full oven and hob, huge fridge, dishwasher etc. Both the bedroom and living room have plasma tvs (but no sky channels). It's situated in Darling Habour about 1 minute from the Aquarium. The staff were very friendly and helpful too!

We booked 2 bedrooms for 6 nights. When we arrived we found that the children's room was better. They had 2 single beds which equated to a queen sized bed while we had an Australian double, which wasnt even good quality. Further, the children had the 'kitchen' area. This wasnt an ideal setup and to their credit the manager moved us - an upgrade. So, my husband and I moved to a lower floor and the girls stayed put. During the night a heavy picture fell off the wall onto my younger daughter's bed - fortunately she wasnt hurt. My older daughter slept on the couch - bed too old to support her. Again, the management listened and acted. The girls were moved to a room next to ours - and we all settled well. On check out we were billed for an inhouse movie which we didnt watch. Again, they accepted our word and it was removed from the bill.

So, the moral of the tale is Medina was found wanting in some areas and it responded professionally and appropriately.

Great location. Close to 711 Supermarket; ferry, monorail, restaurants etc.

I stay in this Hotel as it is one of only 4 on my companies list, that we must choose from.
I use a One-bed Apartment. The units are spacious, which I like when I have to work,, and are well located at King St Wharf. Breakfasts in the "Lime" are really good.
The downsides are :- the cheap furniture and fittings, and awful bed; absolutely Zero room service; almost complete lack of customer service; complimentary newspapers delivered well after normal business people leave for work; very restricted (for Sydney) television programme choice; dirty furniture, especially couches; and don't believe it when they advertise the availability of Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

This provides a great, spacious alternative to the traditional hotel room option, Our room was very clean and the windows offered excellent sound proofing from the busy roads outside. Convenience shops are also nearby as well as an array of restaurants etc. and the Sydney Convention Centre We also think it represented good value for money at 150$AU per night in August 2009, though deals are cheaper through wofit.com than with the hotel directly.

Niggle would be about the fact that one of the receptionists entered our room while my partner was home, apparently to 'show' another couple what the room looked like. He apparently thought the room was empty but this gave my partner a real fright. I know this was probably an honest mistake but the reception team really should know which rooms are occupied. They are no security chains/privacy locks on the door either to prevent this kind of thing happening.

In addition, room service seems a bit over zealous. If you put the do not disturb sign on the door, they call you to ask if you need anything. I know this is probably well meaning, but when your body is still in a European time zone the last thing you need it being wakened despite a DND sign.

Besides these relatively minor niggles, I would definitely consider Medina Grand Harbourside if I was visiting Sydney again.
