“Great base for exploring Sydney”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

This hotel is a really great base for Sydney. It's five minutes from Circular Quay, where you can get on a ferry to Manly or anywhere else in the inner harbour; a train to/from Sydney airport; or a bus to Bondi. It's also across the road from the Botanic Gardens which are lovely and peaceful, with the Opera House at the end of the street. You really are in the middle of it all.

The hotel is boutique like and the service reflects this - the staff work very hard to make sure you feel looked after. They checked us in early and quickly, greeted us each time we left or came back and I got a sense that they genuinely cared that you had a great stay.

In terms of the hotel itself, the public areas are very well appointed, with a wonderful roaring fireplace with lots of papers behind reception and 30mins of free wifi in this area (generally unpublicised).

The room itself was very comfortable with a Juliet balcony facing the street. Despite being street side and close to a motorway, we had no issues with noise at all. In fact, we probably had the best nights' sleep here of our entire stay in Australia. It was also very clean.

It would be five stars apart from that the room was a bit tired looking and a contrast to the lavish public areas.

Nice terrace suite overlooking the Circular Quay. Helpful staff, no hassle check in. Lovely marble bathroom. We would do it again in a heartbeat. Can't beat the location as the Circular Quay is a major transportation hub with access to trains, buses and every ferry just a minute away.

Dear VanTheMan61,

Thank you for your review after your recent stay at the Sir Stamford.

It sounds like the Hotel and the staff won you over. Our terrace suites are just wonderful rooms and they allow our guests to sit back, relax and enjoy. We encourage our guests to upgrade to these rooms where possible, however, they do sell very quickly.

We would love to see you again so be sure to review our website to find great seasonal specials and packages that are taylored for those Sydney events.

I look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Kind regards

We spent 4 nights here prior to cruising in March and were amazed by it convenience. It is close to the Botanic Gardens, Circular Quay and the Opera House and makes an ideal base for those who don't like high rise modernity.

It is a little shabby chic but the staff are really friendly and helpful which counts for a lot to jet lagged air travellers.

There were problems with the lifts when we were there and I had the impression that this was a regular difficulty.

The real problem is the notice indicating an application for planning permission for residential development which we were advised was for part of the hotel will have on its future business model was unclear.

Recommended.

Dear PBJCHESHIRE,

Thank you for your review after your recent stay at the Sir Stamford.

Our Hotel is old world charm and we strive to be a home away from home where we offer service to our guests that is of a standard above many others.
We are very popular with Cruise passengers both before and after their cruises and this is due to our location to Circular Quay allowing them the option to walk to or from the Ship.
With regard to the development of the Hotel, this is very much in the planning stages and no persmissions have be granted as yet. Further information can be found on the City of Sydney website.

I hope to welcome you back to the Hotel in the near future.

The hotel is very conveniently located close to the Quay, ferries, Opera House, botanical gardens and the Rocks. The concierge was efficient and helpful. The reservation was easy to make and the staff did all it could to make our room available early. Our room was very comfortable, clean, well-appointed and quiet and with good views. Our only negatives - internet service was not free and we had to correct the charges, the hotel did not provide an adapter, but expected us to buy one from them for $20, and there was an added fee of 1.5% for using a credit card. Those three glitches are the reasons for 4 stars instead of 5. Breakfast was expensive, as in most hotels, but we walked down to the Quay for our breakfast

Room Tip: Tell the front desk that you want a high floor and a one-level room. Some have stairs between the m...

Thank you for your review after your recent stay at the Hotel.

I am glad that you found the Hotel comfortable and the staff offered a high level of service to you. This is something we pride ourselves on.
WIFI services in the Hotel are complimentary in the Business centre and Hotel Lobby, where we have an open fire and our guests can enjoy food and beverage services in these areas also.
Credit card surcharges are standard within the Hotels in Australia presently and our fee of 1.5% is comparable with the other Hotels within sydney CBD and the Rocks.

We arrived about 10 am from overseas and the staff took us to the fitness facilities so we could change and shower in advance of our room being ready. We were given a 'special room' which was very nice in the older part of the hotel, several steps in the room so not accessible if that had been needed. Room was large with fireplace and looked out on the park. Room maintenance was top notch.
Hotel is waling distance to Opera House, the Rocks and other attractions as well as across street from domaine and Botanic Gardens.
Did not eat dinner at the hotel. Breakfast once which was somewhat underwhelming. Breakfast was a mix of buffet and ordering. Selection was varied but toast making was involved and selections ran out before the meal was over.
We would stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the street and park are not noisy and have a good view.

Dear 643retiredguy,

Thank you for your review after your recent stay with us at the Sir Stamford.

Our old world charm is one of a kind and I am glad that you enjoyed your stay at the the Hotel.

The Hotel was the original New South Wales Health Department of which our Bar currently operates in the ground level. The rooms in this part of the Hotel boast some added extras and this includes the fireplace in the room. We also have 2 open fireplaces that we operate during the winter months, one in the Hotel lobby and the other in The Bar.

We are always looking for areas to improve on so I will be sure to review our breakfast offerings.

A very lovely room indeed, very spacious and very airy. The hotel is very centrally located, only minutes away from the quay and the opera house. However the hotel is in need of an update as the bathroom is beginning to smell mouldy. We stayed for 2 nights and it was rather noisy at night. Don't think windows are double-glazed so you could hear the traffic all night long and it was definitely a show stopper. The other side of the building wouldn't fare any better as it would face the train track. There is the same good coffee and tea making facilities but no biscuits which is a shame for me. Bed and pillows are still very comfortable, sound proofing against neighbor is also good. There is free wifi available in lobby. Unlike to visit for the second time because of the street noise and the smell.

As we had to leave for the airport before 7am the hotel had pre-booked us a taxi. Unfortunately upon check out they had no record of our booking (even though I had a confirmation), and the taxi never came.

Dear Julia731,

Thank you for your review after your recent stay at the Sir Stamford at Circular Quay.

I am glad that you found the location of the hotel suitable for visitng all the local attractions of Sydney. I am sorry to read that you were disturbed by the street noise as this is not a comment that I have received in the past.

The Hotel is continually working towards the upkeep of our rooms whilst being sure to maintain our boutique feel.

It is dissapointing that the taxi company did not arrive after confirming the booking, recently the Hotel has been working closely with a private car company to arrange personalised transfers for our guests.

Kind regards

We stayed at this hotel for a night on each side of our recent cruise. On both occasions we arrived well before the check in time (due to flight arrival from overseas, and return time of the cruise ship) and we couldn't fault the frontline staff on how helpful they were in trying to ensure we had access to our room on each occasion as quickly as possible. Top marks to the concierge, reception and housekeeping staff. They were awesome!!

The first night we spent there we had a lovely room, very spacious, very clean and with a lovely view of the harbour. This room had a sofa with coffee table, and a chair at a desk - which were all appreciated, given there were three of us staying.

The second night we spent there the room wasn't quite so spacious, didn't have sufficient seating to accommodate the three of us, which meant we had to use the beds to watch television, eat room service meals etc - not quite so comfortable, but still quite acceptable. There was also no remote control for the television on the second night.

On both nights, despite us booking in for a room for three, there had only been cups etc provided for two guests - so we had to ask for an extra cup etc.

We were however extremely disappointed with the room service meals on two occasions. My husband ordered the omelette on our first stay for breakfast - for $20.00 we certainly expected something better than what he was served - my Mum and I ended up sharing our breakfast with him as we felt so sorry for him receiving such a miserly sized serving. It was not a fluffy omelette like you'd expect of this sort of establishment - it was more like a crepe - and totally unfilling even with the two fillings he'd chosen, and certainly not worth the money paid. We eat out for breakfast regularly, and this would have to be the worst omelette I have ever seen! (See photo)

On our first stay we decided to also order room service for our dinner. My Mum and I ordered the Barramundi fish meal for $31.00 - the fish and chips were lovely, although it would have been nice to have had more vegetables or salad served with it - the salad was pretty sparse - consisting of a few lettuce leaves and two pieces of tomato. (See photo). Back for a second night's stay nine days later, we decided to order the Barramundi fish again - what a HUGE disappointment! The fish on both plates was 90% black - and tasted awful, rendering it inedible in our opinions. The chips were once again nice, but once again the salad was sparse and very basic. My Mum left a note on our returned plate stating that we were very disappointed with the fish - the majority of which was returned on the plate. The note did not receive any response from the kitchen. I just wish I'd thought to take a photo that night! Upon check out the next morning, my Mum mentioned it to the receptionist with the only response being "she would speak to the chef about it" but couldn't do anything about it then - so we were both charged $31 for the very poor inedible meals. Upon our return home, we waited several weeks, and received no follow-up, so emails were sent. To be quite honest, they were not interested in giving us a partial refund on these meals. The response we received from the Bar Manager was ...

"I have followed up with the chef about the quality of food that was sent out to your table and I can assure you that this will not happen again. He is not sure why for any reason that the flesh of the fish was black and is retraining all his staff to make sure that they are aware of quality that is to be sent to guests. Whilst it is not possible to undo the past, I would hope that you consider giving us the opportunity of proving the true levels of hospitality that we pride ourselves on offering at Sir Stamford Circular Quay."

This is not helpful when they are in Sydney and we are in New Zealand! A subsequent email was sent to their General Manager, but a satisfactory resolution was not forthcoming - other than a suggestion that if we were in Auckland (we live in Christchurch - a 1.5 hour flight away!) then maybe they could show us a better dining experience.

Unfortunately the meals we experienced totally marred what was otherwise a very pleasant experience. As mentioned previously, the rooms were lovely, the frontline staff were awesome, location was great and the hotel had a nice pool, gym etc - however, it is just a shame that when something isn't right, management aren't prepared to offer a realistic way of resolving the issue.

Personally, if I was to stay here again (which is doubtful based on the above), I would certainly not be eating on-site, but looking to other food vendors in the area.
