The Sir Stamford boasts an unrivalled location for those visiting Sydney for all its famous sites. Literally 2 minutes from Circular Quay and 5 minutes walk to the Opera House. The Rocks and Harbor Bridge are all within easy walking, while the Botanic Gardens are literally across the road. Our room was huge and very tastefully decorated. The lobby area harks back to colonial days and has the feel of a gentleman's club, without the stuffiness. Would certainly stay here again, although the reception staff should be a little less aloof (maybe take their lead from the much friendlier concierge staff.)

We stayed twice in this hotel for romantic getaways. The first time was in November 2008. We booked a fantastic deal on Wotif.com which included the best available suite with access to a private lounge on the 5th floor for pre dinner drinks and canapés as well as breakfast. It was very exclusive and an enormous treat for us. Sadly, I injured my back on that occasion and so we repeated the trip in order to complete our dinner harbour cruise with Captain Cook. That offer was not available when we returned 6 months later and is still not mentioned anywhere on their web site, which is a great pity. So instead when we returned we took the best available suite option without the private lounge or any meal inclusions. The first time the suite was larger with two televisions, but both were very spacious with walk in robes, powder room, balcony (albeit small) with a view to the harbour, and impeccable decor and facilities.
Service was impeccable at all times, when I injured my back a doctor was quickly found even late on a Saturday night, and a wheelchair was provided, ramp placed and assistance given. The private lounge service was really excellent. We also went to the bar both times and service was great, the Friday night singer was brilliant and came around and spoke to all the patrons in her breaks. Decor is beautiful throughout, I was surprised to find it is actually a new building not a heritage building as it has been constructed faithfully to period specifications and furnished accordingly. Room service was above average. I suspect some of those who have made adverse comments were perhaps not given as good service due to being in standard rooms rather than suites.
Location is nothing short of perfect. Close to circular Quay for ferries, trains or buses and ideally located within walking distance of the Opera House and restaurants in the Rocks. Stroll through the exquisite Botanic Gardens to the Art Gallery. We recommend the German SteakHouse for a fun night and hearty feed. Great reasonably priced breakfasts can be had at the Circular Quay 24 hours cafe.
Our Captain Cook dinner harbour cruise deserves a special mention. Great food, sensational band for dancing, and a long cruise around the harbour made it a magical night to remember forever. Perfect for a special occasion, there were lots of anniversaries! We were lucky having a table near the dance floor. You can pay extra to have a window seat but it didn’t matter really, we preferred being near the dancefloor.
I recommend Stamford for your Sydney getaway.

Having read some very positive reviews we looked forward to staying at the Sir Stamford. Certainly the location is excellent with all the facilities of Circular Quay close at hand, the Botanic Gardens on the doorstep and ferries, trains and buses including the free CBD shuttles only two minutes away. And yes there is a hint of elegance with soft music playing and olde worlde furniture, paintings and artefacts in the public areas and doormen on hand to bow and scrape.
However we were very unimpressed when reception claimed to have no knowledge of our reservation and continued to blame us for their mistake. They seemed to be doing us a big favour by eventually deigning to allocate a room. They were equally slow to sort out other difficulties and on departure tried to charge us for breakfasts we had not taken. Though elegant the public areas were a bit battered, the lifts rather smelly and creaky and remains of room service stayed uncollected in the corridors. Housekeeping was also hit and miss with supplies of tea and coffee and toiletries not always being replenished. Our room was an executive suite but had limited views, no balcony and the aircon was noisy. Even when switched off there was loud mechanical noise. The bedroom was more suited to a single executive than a couple with one side of the bed difficult to access because of the sloping roof. Bedroom lighting was dismal with no main light and just one table lamp.
We did not use the restaurant other than for one breakfast that was ok but overpriced and noticed the dining chairs were far too low and unsuitable. The pool was small and baisc but ok if there was no one else wanting to use it.
All in all we felt Sir Stamford did not offer value for money.

Upon arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome, by the valet attendants, and asked if we would like valet parking, we chose to park ourselves. Very disappointed because we found that we could not access the reception area directly from the parking basement. Reception was friendly and efficient. Every effort was made to ensure our comfort. The room was large, clean and well layed out. Some may say the decor was dated, but my wife and I enjoy the Olde World elegance. Large functional bath room. Probably the biggest we have experienced, all the amenities you could need and plenty of hot water.

The bar was warm and welcoming, and the restaurant equal to any we have experienced. Service was efficient and unobtrusive, the wait staff very welcoming and professional.

The only downside to our room was the dated technology. Wi-Fi was available in the room, but at a surcharge!!

All in all we both enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel for a relaxing weekend in Sydney, its location to all tourist venues, public transport and city centre was excellent. To all the staff at the Sir Stamford, Circular Quay, thank you

Peter & Marilyn
