Owner description: Built in 1858 Sydney Observatory is a fascinating heritage site and public observatory. The quintessential visit is a night tour of 90 minute duration which includes telescope viewing and a Space Theatre experience with a planetarium experience in cloudy weather. Night tours ($18/22 adult) must be booked and prepaid. Day tours are designed for tourists and include a Planetarium 'virtual sky' experience, solar viewing (weather permitting) and a Space Theatre in 30-40 minute tours. Entry to the Observatory is free during the day, tours are a small extra charge ($10 adult or you can use the iventure Sydney card) but well worth it to experience astronomy and solar viewing with an astronomer.

Hi Maree,
Thank you for your feedback. Andrew was very pleased to hear you enjoyed and found the tour informative. I do hope you will return to see Jupiter, which is now rising, and the Great Orion Nebula.

Happy Stargazing 2014.

The observatory is an absolute gem - amazing panaromic views of Sydney Harbour and the bridge from the outside, and inside is a trove of information and displays about the history of weather and star gazing in Sydney.

But the highlight is the evening tour which includes seeing and using the oldest telescope in Australia (through which one can see the twin stars side by side in Alpha Centauri!). Then a more modern telescope through which we say Saturn's rings so wonderfully clearly!

The guide was fantastic - funny and very informative.

This is another way to get a great look at the Harbour bridge and the harbour, But didnt seem busy when I went.
The building is really pretty but the information in the observatory is quite boring and theres not alot to keep you interested.
But the views are amaing just outseide the building.
Not many tourist when I visited .

Hi,

Thanks for your insights into your experience. It is always good to take a tour, and our daytime tours are reasonably priced and offer access to the telescope dome and telescope viewing. We do need to update our exhibits and comments, such as yours, are valuable as we plan towards this.

This is by far the best attraction in Sydney. The views are amazing and the exhibits are great. The planetarium was fantastic and interesting while the telescope tour blew me away. the 3-d Theater was amazing and the staff was so friendly and keen to ask any questions. They even had a fun garden and you always get a breeze in the sun. I recommend this place so much and I hope no one misses this attraction.

We went as a group of 10 to a night visit and was given our own guide. While it is a small observatory that working telescopes gave us some spectacular sights. The guide was very knowledgeable and talked to all of us, adults and children and was able to ask and answer a whole host of questions. The location is superb, the best in Sydney, and we went back in the day just to spend some time in the grounds. Loved it.
